Ex-heavy metal fan here, too. Shit either got old or I did. Can still take Jimi Hendrix and the classics. Prefer heavy trance beats over the guitar riffs these days.

I LOVE Classic Rock, especially Pink Floyd and Elton John(greatest live performer I've seen...4 times now!). I'm a big New Age music fan-Enya, Vangelis, Enigma. I love Handel and Beetoven. I listen to everything. All genres of music have good artists....
reggae/ bhangra hindi remixes
prog
house
chillout (the stuff that di.fm plays)
ambient
techno, acid techno
a small amount of classic rock (zeppelin)
alternative {stp, dave matthews, bush, counting crows, john mayer, david grey, jack johnson, etc.)
grunge (nirvana, jane's addiction)
rock (deftones, 311, collective soul, pearl jam,
hard rock (korn, danzig, primer 55, godsmack, disturbed, marylin manson, nine inch nails, orgy, rammstein, static x)
emo (dashboard confessionals, weezer, jimmy eats world)
female bands (tori amos, alanis morrisette, sarah mclachlan, norah jones)
and then just a bunch of misc. singles ive downloaded that i liked off the radio

ill pretty much listen to anything except country and mainstream hip hop cause imo its gone to trash.
Well I think most people would classify brands like travis and radiohead as indie rock.
I dont know what indie really means but if you go to sites like bbc , they'd classify those type of bands as indie rock.Who knows, maybe i'm wrong. Not that interested of which music falls into which category.Theres too much genre's nowadays.Radio stations are classifying Tiesto and PVD as POP.Hmm...
Yeah, I used to dig heavy metal too.But got bored of listening to metallica 24/7 during my teeny bopper days.
Anyways, I dont think Rock can ever reach what it achieved from the late 70s to the early 90s.
If you guys listen to a new band called The Darkness, well, lets say the band pretty much sumed up what rock meant in the 80s.They're trying to remake 80s rock with their big hair and silly costumes. It may be a dumb move, but I sincerely respect and appreaciate what they're trying to do.Give it a listen.
Concerning non-EDM:
I love relaxed pop and trip-hop music, Hooverphonic is great. Also love both Dido albums and the new Kosheen album..
For a change, I am considering buying Evanescence - Fallen.
And another great relaxation album is Afterlife - Simplicity Two Thousand.. If I find that one somewhere, I'll surely buy it too..

I'm really into acid jazz. Great stuff like Zero dB. I'm also a huge blues fan, love the old Delta Robert Johnson/Skip James classics. Other than those I really love drum & bass. I got my brother addicted to electronic music, he got me addicted to being a DJ.
most sorts of EDM.
other main music like is Indie -
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Strokes
White Stripes
Mono
Soulwax
The Thrills
& i recently bought the Outkast album. i hate hiphop normally but i do like this.
Most of the addicts here seem to have roots in Hard Rock and Metal. You just can't beat the throbbing bass of trance and no guitar beating is going to match it. There's been some attempts at some merger.
One great example is York - Yesterday (Vocal Mix). It's Evanescence before they ever tried it.

somthing that can put me to sleep
first of all.....INCUBUS and TOOL
then theres toadies, deftones, radiohead, 311, Our Lady Peace (their older stuff), the smashing pumpkins, finger eleven, kenna, hayden, the soundtrack to "empire records", foofighters, sublime, glassjaw.
and my current favorite local bands...the echidnas and carbon 12 theory.
Acid jazz, ohhh yeah.
Anything and everything that sounds good. I guess it would range from Yanni's stuff to oldies by Olivia Newton John to the wilder jock rock of Linkin Park. I wouldn't say that I listen to trance/dance/house most of the time, but it sure is taking more and more of it. There is just something about beat heavy but uplifting music playing in the background. The fewer lyrics are a bonus when I am trying to concentrate on work.
Chill,
TCT
new Blink 182 cd just came out
, i used to be the biggest Blink fan before I got into trance
I listen to ambient a lot (like Steve Roach, Dilate, Liquid Mind, ATOI, etc).
I also like IDM and Experimental (like ISAN, BOC, Autechre, Aphex Twin, etc).
Regards,

Trance is my love of course,
<3
But, alternative rock/rock/punk rock/emo punk is right after!
