I find it entertaining that the same people who criticized Paul Oakenfold for going in a different direction with 'Bunkka' are defending Paul van Dyk for going in a different direction with 'Reflections.'

| Originally posted by paranoik0 as a dj, dunno, i don't have many sets of him. the ones i got impressed by the mixing skills, probably the best i've heard on a trance dj, but i just don't like his track selection. as a producer.. err.. he's over-rated as hell. |
Initially I though REFLECTIONS was horrible! But after a few more listens, its actually not that bad but certainly I think he could have done much better. I think he overuse vocals and cheesy beats.

Yeah, not too impressed with reflections... but in his defense, he did set the bar a little high with Out There and Back (deserves caps). I agree that his sound really hasn't changed all that much. I saw him at Space this weekend and he blew the roof off, best live experience I've had with him... so I agree his live sets are killer. I do think he could add a little more variety in them, but deserving to be at least in the top 5, I DEFINITELY agree... not past his prime.
you guys clown everybody...i have not seen AT LEAST one DJ who has
not been dissed on this forum. people make fun of tiesto cuz he has
an engineer...people clown mike cuz of his somewhat repetitive synths
from time to time. who's next? john o'bir, j'00'f?

Don't know if this thread really needs my input but I'm gonna blurb a bit anyway (yes, I'm at work). People allergic to long rants are advised to stop reading here.
I've been a huge PvD fan since the release of X-Mix 1: The MFS Trip back in 1993 and his collaboration with Cosmic Baby under the "Visions of Shiva" guise. I saw him live for the first time in 1994 and since then I've been enjoying his sets many, many times. "Out there and back" was, for me, the high point of his career (although "We're alive" is a track I never really will accept). For being a full length album from an electronic dance artist it was exceptionally tight.
Anyhow, with his latest album there have been a clear change of direction from this top DJ, something that has been stated numerous times in this thread already. As a DJ who used to cane his tracks everytime I got the chance, this direction feels like it's going the wrong way. I cannot help feeling he's trying to do an "Oakenfold".
Let me explain. PvD has been on top of his game in club land for a very long time and honestly, there isn't much more he can accomplish that he hasn't already done. Except for maybe hit that first position on the ever so coveted DJ list. The logical thing then is to expand into new territories and domains. Trying to cross over to a different audience were there is more room for growth and development. And yes, that would mean going a bit more mainstream. Doing soundstracks, getting more radio airplay and trying to get respect as an artist outside the clubbing world. Although his tracks still works on the dancefloor they have been moving towards something that's equally suited for just listening. Hence, the tempo drop and more use of vocals in his tracks.
This is something I myself won't be spinning as a DJ, however I can respect him as an artist producing sounds to which I can listen to and enjoy, but not necessarily dance to.
I think it's a very logical progression for an artist such as him and you'll probably be seeing this many times, with different top producers. If Tiesto hasn't already begun I predict he'll be doing the same in 2004.
I personally think PVD past his use by date a long time ago, when i look back at the earlier stuff he did late 90's its wicked. His mixing isnt terribly amazing and he doesnt really do it for me at all.
Bog standard trance music.

dj irish, that is amazing that you have seen him live in 1994! i imagine you must have seen him a few times then in the mid and upper 90s.... i cant imagine what that would have been like. wow, i wish i could have that experience....too bad i was only 13 yrs old in 1994

I agree with Dj_Irish.
Even though Paul is going into some commericial territory, there's really not too many other directions for him to go.
I would, however, like to see him do an album of techno-influenced productions.
