Actually, I think that males dominate a vast majority of activities. You just name it: sports, music, cinema, arts, education, everything, including cooking (since the best cooks and chefs are males...) And trance is just another number of the list. I don't want to sound as a sexist, but I guess that's the reality. Just give it a thought and you'll see what I say...

This is a great thread making a great point. I often wonder and have actually talked many times about about WHY there are hardly ANY girls who are hardcore into the trance/house dance scene in general. On TA even. Sure there are a few but relative to guys ... NONE. In life in general I meet 9.99999 males who listen to dance. Girls (ike myself) are definitely a rarity. Hmmmm makes you think; weiiiiird.

I almost did a Gilda Radner posting of Emily Littella until I actually read the comments. Yeah, male dominated DJs, producers, etc., but the females are the star singers. At least in my book, since I listen solely to trance vocals with females. Don't really care who's spinning or producing or whatever, just who's singing as the final product! Lol\\\\\!

Sure you can...at least about 97% of it is that, males limiting females--though it's not like it's done purposefully or maliciously, anymore. Males don't actively discourage female DJing, but the sheer fact there are so many males and so few females is daunting to women and in that way limits female participation. You might say that's our fault, and not males' fault, but given the long history of male-controlled nations where they did suppress women and there was an extreme lack of female rights...well, that just speaks for itself.

I know PLENTY of females who really want to learn how to DJ (myself included) but we feel intimidated by the massive amount of males who dominate the scene. The same is true with picking up a guitar in a rock band. Generally speaking (and this is not always true), females feel a bit shy or nervous or insecure when they are trying to learn completely new things in a male-dominated area. Vocal talent is something you pretty much already have and don't have to learn from scratch while all these males (and far more experienced females) are staring at you, judging you. So most girls stick to vocals.

As far as the cave example...heh...I think I would have to disagree. Plenty of women "played with tools" as it were, just not the bows and arrows you're thinking of. Women made pottery. Women sewed. Women gardened. Women helped skin the deer for dinner. Women had plenty of tools. Just not in the bloody man-goeth-into-the-forest-to-hunt type of thing you might be imagining.

So, really, the only reason you cite the "greatest scientists and inventors" as men is because of what I've already said: females have long been discouraged to enter into the male-dominated arena, and thus have stuck to the safer regions of home and child raising. As a result, historically speaking, men have made the major scientific breakthroughs. It's not because women don't WANT to, trust me! And although today men ARE far more encouraging, it's only been 40 odd years since women's lib, and it's gonnna take a lot longer before women as a gender feel more confident to launch themselves into male-dominated fields.

I have a few female friends that love trance. I think that maybe elctronic music hasn't been directed to women exclusively. Maybe if the djs tried new stuff (like Oakenfold with "Starry Eyed Surprise") that were aiming for female audiences trance or other genres could have more dancing femles.

Generalizations like "females need vocals" are kind of ridiculous. You'll hear your guy friends complain just as much if you listen. There's nothing that relates a sex organ to needing words for a song. I think it's dangerous stereotyping to say that women aren't smart enough to get it.
In American culture, at least, women are mainly rewarded for being sexy. Dancing to hiphop is very sexual, so society tells women that they should be interested in that to prove themselves. They're not pushed towards trance. But that means we should try to pull them in. Like neoh complained, "I find that most females are too worried about their looks and self esteem to dance to the music. My girlfriend loves it, but she refused to dance at a rave we went to. It's amazing. "

I think that males may be more likely to find trance because it's a community that has a very strong internet presence, and women are less likely to surf the internet extensively (another stereotype about females can't be nerds).

Misstress Barbara, DJ Astrid, Sandra Collins & Baby Anne whoop some ass, there's definitely nothing keeping out females that wanna be here.

Ok. First off we need to drop the whole female DJ as part of the discussion. This is not what we are asking. Who's on the decks male or female has nothing to with why girls don't come to shows. Look at rock concerts. Women show up at the concert because they like the band. (rare exception being a girl wanting to become a DJ looking up to the female DJ as an idol)

Second: to reinforce Jessicah's points, Trance is NOT mainstream, its underground. If you don't live in a big city where a lot of parties happen, then the internet becomes your main source for Trance and I don't have to convince anyone what the guy/girl ratio is for computer use. So, therefore since Trance has slowly been introduced since 99, it is not being played at meatmarket clubs and girls are NOT exposed to it.

Conclusion: It is OUR fault as men. We have to INVITE girls. Give the girl a mix cd. I take full responsibility for girls not being at clubs and I shut my trap really quick when my friends and I walk in and are about to say to ourselves: "dang: sausagefest 2003" cause then we remember: Oh yea WE didn't ask any girls to come either.

It's the age old story of: "Hey lets go meet hot girls at club. Cool I'll ask Joe #1 #2 and#3 to come, it'll be great." Well, all over the city this same senario is happening between different guy friends so W T F did you think was gonna happen?

I'm always trying to recruit girls from everywhere but no offense to the good people of the south ; IT'S THE DIRTY SOUTH up in hea'. The girls I meet are like: ohhh you listen to "TECHNO"?. you go to "RAVES"? their idea of a good night out is WILD BILLS(fokin rednek linedancing club)."NOOO its NOT just country. they play ALL kinds of music" (yea raunchy hip hop booty remixes and some NSYNC club rmx) =ghey.

Oh and another one that gets me: "how do you dance to that beat? (trance 4/4 straight) I can't dance to that straight beat." How the hell can you NOT dance to a straight beat? IT'S LIKE A CLEAN SLATE = TOTAL FREEDOM. its harder to dance to booty/ hip hop cause its break beat.

Anyways ive been trying to convert my friends for years now. I prefer to give out Tiesto Sunrise 3 cd, or maybe PvD Global as a easy beginner's cd. please list other suggestions here.

It's really sad that people can not hear the music the same way I can. I guess its all that classical music background and 7 years of piano lessons that has brought me to love trance as it uses classical instruments/samples/sounds.

In the end I would like to praise all the girls that DO go to parties and show up and dance their a$$es off all night. You make up for all the other girls that have no clue what good music is.

you're right though! let's start a revolution. Every girl you know, doesnt matter if she's hot or not, that's not what's really important in the end, just give her a few cds of some great trance, tell her to have a listen. If we can get 1 girl in 10 converted, say we all know 20 girls, that's 2 girls per guy
