Richie Hawtin PLays to the masses..

Its not a matter of PLaying to a lot of peoPLe, its a matter of PLaying the music you love. It is obvious when DJ's are PLaying the stuff they really dig..to when they are PLaying stuff that is ok..but they know it will werk.
Look at Master Kaos...he likes hardtrance...so he has PLayed it for years now...but because he has got a strong fanbase it has allowed him to PLay a lot more freely...he chucks in breaks, drum and bass...techno...whatever he likes..his fans like him and his ears....not just the rekkids he is PLaying.

Two choices:

1. Be a sellout and get lots of cash
2. Don't be a sellout and stay poor

Which one will you choose? I know which one I'll choose...

Dools, are you Mark Lathams adviser?.. me is confoosed??

I dont think Matt & Marcella would be coming to only play Melgurn, i'd say a Sydney gig is already signed up.

You can still play what you like if you have a real job to support your hobby.

how did RnB take over the australia?

there must be a way to emulate their success in indoctrinating kiddies with that bullshit noise :/

People like vocals, and alot of them.

I don't think they like their imagination being controlled by synths or melodies but rather by words.

When i was in school i used to broadcast trance through-out the school, like they had these speakers everywhere and at lunch times i would be pumping trance , next thing i know is that a swarm of people are telling me turn off the trance shit and put stuff that had vocals... they said it repeats too much, and it's cheap... Though i didn't listen to them, i locked the door and pumped out even harder stuff, just another sense of how RnB and some of the other crap has had success and easily shows the ignorance of some people... ah well.

speaking of brands in sydney.

Look at the most succesful nights/events.

Sublime, Fuzzy, Plastic, Utopia, Transmission, Beatdivision (not beatdivision its self but the parties it puts on e.g. Gods Kitchen, Slinky, Two Tribes etc..)

Why are these so popular? Because they are seen as the place to go! Why? because they have built up their name so much to the point were people see a fuzzy party and go "man its a fuzzy party, lets go" they have nfi who is playing tho.

Also how many people do you speak to who are new to the scene or not even in the scene and they will ask "do you go to sublime?" or "do you go to utopia etc..." People who just wanna go out for a night will go to subbies because thats the first thing that pops into their mind.

The same goes for Gods kitchen, gatecrasher etc.. its all people know who are not into the scene fully.

It cost about $50,000 just to use the Gods Kitchen logo at a party like two tribes etc.. and i suppose its worth it for promoters.

So after all that crapping on Its all about BRAND recognition!

So yea if we could use the GK name some how at gas, space etc.. on a regular basis, u would probably get big crowds!

arrgghh! RnB does my head in

dumb down the trance synths, and add a couple of words like bitch, booze, ******, fuck, hot, thong

there you have it an RnB song

I'd be guessing Joshva and Scotty are working on the Sydney leg based on what they've hinted.

muli: There was a party in '03 (Slinky I think) that was on @ Marquarie Uni.....It had the banner and did SFA in terms of punters, but that's the only time that I can think of where a banner hasn't packed out......The advertising budget behind a banner party is in the $10,000 as well, so they will also hit a wider audience then those who go out week in week out, or don't get 3d world, or don't read forums.

Joshva:-"Anyway I personally am doing my best", good stuff, welcome to the world of fliering every Friday and Saturday night at every venue (and that's just the start...then there's trying to attract people who aren't into trance to the event, to convert them, ala grow the scene)

Jules:- Up here at the moment I don't think a name/reputation matters. It's about the banner. As muli said look @ what does well...

Over all, I've spent many days and nights(I assume like many of you), thinking about how to get people back into clubs. I'm happy to talk to anyone about this in person, but I've got to much to say on a forum.

A little answer tho, for those who aren't in Syd, I don't think promoters are taking the right approach; too many small nights fighting for market share when none are majorly established.

Wade, there may be too many little nights competing for market share, but at least there are people that want to do something more than stay at home.. which i think is a good thing & eventually someone will get it right.... i hope.

I hope so too At the moment, It'd be nice to have a monthly trance party thrive(Alt/Halcyon freshed things up up here, that's for sure). From there we can look at moving to bi-weekly, then weekly.

The below as on ITM, but 100% IMHO sums up why people go out...(who aren't dedicated followers, but turn up to big nights etc)

Say for the aforementioned Mobile Home:

Massive mainstream ad campaign + Bondi Beach + Millenium NYE + World's #1 DJ (at the time) + The fact it looked like a great party = Sellout event.

Monthly nights are better imo.

Posted by waXology on Feb-20-2004 06:56:

true.. i also think there is too many small events... i think their needs to be a rival to Transmission.. another big event to go every off month Transmission isnt on.

with regards darey and marcella.. didnt they break up, why would the hook up again?

Posted by Joshva on Feb-20-2004 07:16:

Well as S_madis and others mentioned branding is key. We need strong brands which people recognise. That is why "A Night at Icebox" has changed names this month to "A Night of Trance". The team feels that the new name is more brandable. It is also less dependable on the individual venue. The new name displays what we are about and it is not to different from our old name so hopefully people will realise what the night is.

^^^
The big surprise i refered to earlier was not about Marcella or a Dj in particular. It should more be a solution to what you talked about above.

Posted by Mangler on Feb-20-2004 07:16:

errm.. maybe for a profession & to earn some $.. theyve been recording together even after their break up.

They did indeed break up, BUT Dareys connection with Marcella hasn't been broken. It's definetly not your typical relationship where they lose touch.

respect to Darey.

Hah, yeah! Welcome to Perth!
