Patticus, I wasn't talking about you, I was talking about the fact that "commercial" has become a useless cliche, like "cheese."

geeze, can't believe you guys are still rambling on about this.

labeling a tune this or that calling it cheese or commercial or whatever is only gonna dis-service yourself.

it's all about what is truly good and original. You have good progressive styled tunes, you have the good anthematic styled tunes and you have the more im-mature type tunes.

It's really about the quality of the tune, no matter what style it may fall.

there's alot of junk progressive , uplifting, hardhouse, immature tune out there right?

I only care for the good ones, no matter what genre.

if that doesnt sum up the meaning of commercial, i dont know what does.

in my belief, tiesto more than pvd

hae you heard tiesto lately? he's been going a lot more prog lately.. and I can't fault him for it I looooooooove prog!! Tiesto's set at gcsss was absolutely blinding.. IMHO he's one of the top couple of DJs in the world at the moment

Posted by havok118 on Aug-13-2001 18:44:

AGH...I'm sorry, I can't help myself from posting about the definitions, this is driving me nuts.

Tiesto has ALWAYS spun PROGRESSIVE TRANCE, all the tunes have always fit under the defnition of progressive trance. Epic/uplifting trance IS PROGRESSIVE TRANCE.

The progressive movement that has gotten big is the PROGRESSIVE HOUSE movement. Tiesto doesn't spin progressive house. PvD doesn't usually spin progressive house, he's throws it in sometimes. Sasha spins progressive house and progressive trance. Digweed used to spin the same, but now spins progressive house, tech house, tribal house, and the very occasional progressive trance tune.

The word progressive doesn't mean shit. Learn the difference between progressive house and progressive trance.

My opinion on the subject is that progressive house is alot more intelligent of a music, because it's much more intricate, well produced songs require a great deal of effort to make. I enjoy both, I'd rather hear the prog house in a club though, I like deep bassy songs. Progressive trance I used to love, but more and more it just gives me a headache and makes me cringe.

i cannot be arsed to read thru all this thread.. cuz we had so many like it before.. but progressive is fuckin sweet. i think that if u aint completely bonkers about prog (like i am) then u r best to hear it in a club b4 u get ur opinion although i can listen to prog and dance my ass off anywhere!!

as humate say in their remix of a nova tune...

WELCOME TO THE FUTURE

peace

p.s. even though i havent read this i know theres bound to be some argument in here about what progressive is... if u dont know what it is then pleeeeez dont dis it.. coz thats happened many a time in the past also

Patticus, do you mean his latest CD, "Global Underground Los Angeles"? I've heard that one was disastrous but I myself never listened to it.

Posted by patticus on Aug-14-2001 08:39:

yes, eugene
funny tho

you're the first person ive ever heard not to say it was BRILLIANT
besides myself.

gu la, and other recent sets.. just bore me to death now

i cant listen to them...

Posted by havok118 on Aug-14-2001 13:22:

Digweed's Mixes and live performances are more about mixing and mood regulation...it's not happy music...doesn't appeal to alot of people.

It's two completely different genres, IMO, different strokes for different folks.

I just dig the darker music, I don't particularly care for max graham, him I find boring, the uplifting progressive is what bores me. If I want uplifting, I want a slammin PvD set.

Posted by patticus on Aug-14-2001 18:56:

yes thats true, i actually do like max graham now over digweed
who is still pretty progressive..

Posted by magrec on Aug-14-2001 19:09:

Hmmm i don't understand....i only know one genre as progressive and that isn't tiesto his style.

It is digweed, danny howells, sander kleinenberg etc...

tiesto plays TRANCE.....nothing else...but lately it is wrong to say that he spins trance so people say it is progressive (trance) FUCK it it is just trance..just like pvd armin, ferry corsten etc.

Don't get me wrong but i like sander kleinenberg as well ferry and armin.....but why can't we just say that he plays trance...coz what is trance otherwise?

Posted by havok118 on Aug-14-2001 21:00:

The word "Trance" is just a buzzword. Just like you wouldn't call American bands like Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains, Rock and roll, you can't really call what tiesto spins as just "Trance".

The term trance was coined with the opening of R&S Records in Ghent, Belgium and Harthouse/Eye Q Records in Frankfurt, Germany. R&S defined the sound early on with singles like "Energy Flash" by Joey Beltram, "The Ravesignal" by CJ Bolland, and others by Robert Leiner, Sun Electric, and Aphex Twin. It refered to a music that used metallic synthesizer lines, and repeated drum beats, putting the listener in a trance...almost no melody was utilized. This is TRANCE music.

The classic German sound had changed somewhat though, and the term "progressive" trance gained favor to describe influences from the smoother end of house and Euro dance.

I know I'm being anal, it's just driving me insane.

^^^^ ummmm

Posted by tu_face on Aug-14-2001 21:32:

progressive is so wide.. it covers house, trance, breakbeat, tribal and many others... i dont know how ppl can say that they hate progressive, cuz theres bound to be sum prog tune u like (whether or not uve worked out what prog is)... i think of all the sub-genres its by far the most varied.

ILLOGICAL PROGRESSION IS A FUTURE FUNK PHENOMENA
like it or lump it people

peace

p.s. i luv that in ur sig havok.. obsessive progressive (house) disorder... class man sheer class

Posted by TranceFusion on Aug-14-2001 23:39:

Hello!

well all i have to say is on the progressive side PvD has some tight ass sets as well as my hero Digweed. i dont think i can judge progressive as a like/hate ordeal. eather way they spin great musik that falls under 'trance' we should just leave the sub catagories out of this and enjoi the musik
peace

Well I think it's because people are afraid to voice their opinions, because the "connosseurs" admire all this, and the "connossuers" in turn do that because DJ's like Sasha and Digweed are super-popular.

For example when Digweed releases a stinking piece of shit, these "connosseurs" sniff in delight, a pleasurable smile appears on their faces, and they exclaim "Ah!.. What a stylish palette of colors and sounds, skillfully interspersed with the subtle yet provocative hints of texture... a lush, deeply-layered performance, at once soothing and captivating..."

Nobody is actually brave enough to come out and declare in the open, "This is SHIT." Everybody is riding on this pretense and fame and hype surrounding these super-popular DJ's.

what styles are:
josh wink - higher state of consciousness
voodoo & serano - blood is pumpin
mike hiratzka & dj 5.0 - run (breaks mix)(this is the first track from PVD @ Marc Spoon birthday party liveset)

Eugene, I totally agree with you, couldn't have said it any better.

what kind of b*llsh*t is this? just goes to show how ingnorantly convincable people can be.
