If it wasn't called "progressive", no one would ever care

Well, let's play this game like you just did with another genre, like prog. I could say about the exact same thing as you did here about trance. Everywhere I go on TA I see people praising Luke Chable, zgur Can and Markus Schulz, even though half the productions they and all the mindless copycats churn out these days are boring effect wankery that goes absolutely nowhere and with barely enuff ideas to keep a track interesting for half of the track's duration. This shows that prog is well down the path of stagnation just like trance is with its overused supersaw blare. The fact that the fanbase of the genre have a large ratio of pathetic elitist attitudes makes it even worse. Judging this way, prog is just as "dead" as trance.

However, if people stopped judging either genre on all the artists the massive hype is directed at, one would find more than enuff material that suggests that there's plenty of talent and creativity present.

jan is the man

When these artists aren't too busy making songs that abuse the already tired whore of "epic trance" (which a large many seem to thing is synonymous with "trance", I'm afraid I find it to be poorly representative), they are busy trying to come off as serious or whatnot while simultaneously producing total shit that is insulting to your intelligence. What I consider music doesn't come with a , it doesn't come pre-packaged into some nice little container format that is fit to abuse ad nauseum.

So true.

I think a really important point to stress is that the death of uplifting trance doesn't mean the death of trance. Not at all. There are good and innovative new paths trance is currently taking, but they aren't uplifting trance. Sorry folks, but the ASoT crap is merely getting the last bits of cash out of the 1999 formula.

exactly, and that is completely normal IMO b/c there is only so much you can do with a specific 'success' formula. the problem i think is the definition of genres: 'trance' as we know it from 1999 has been naturally depleted over several years, but trance as of now is in good shape. the sort of branching out and merging of genres we see now makes the EDM scene more eclectic and more interesting than ever before.

there are no set boundaries for genres, so you may call markus schulz 'slowed down trance' or 'prog house', why should you care really. nobody can give a specific definition of a genre, and usually productions that cross or stretch the boundaries of genres sound the best b/c they are original and dont use the set 'classic' formula of a specific genre

hahaha i ve just red the 2001 debate

Where are all these tranceaddicts arguing about urban train(aaahh brings memories flooding back)have gone now??? Are they out of trance now? What happened to all of these people??? Anyway , i think that present time is quite bad for any music genre so nothing very special at the moment. Although, its quite true that trance is steadily declining if you look at the 2001 thread there were still a few good epic memorable tunes back then(urban train!!!!epic monolith!!!!) NOT A SINGLE ONE NOW THAT WILL SURVIVE THE TEST OF TIME and yes the ASOT is really crap!!! In my opinion The only thing that still keeps it to life is that tried and tested cool formula.(you know with the big breakdown in the middle..)and young people that get into it NOW and werent back then.
Progressive house on the other hand its surely not the new revolution, although there are quite a few good tunes and producers that make astonishing works (Yunus Guvenen!!!James Holden!!!Subsky!!!Alexander Church!!!Gwill Morris!!!Hybrid!!!) so overall in my opinion there are better tunes from the progressive side of things right now.

E.g 1: Forget kilimanjaro and dig reflections/touched from firewall on activate(2001 think). If you like kilimanjaro than these will give you goosebumbs!!

E.g 2: I ve just re-discovered my love for a tune airwave-lightspeed!!!woww what a great tune that was! I hear that subsphere produces in the same style...

Hmmm.. and here I was rating 2003 as one of the best years for trance I've had the pleasure of experiencing, possibly my fav, as it kept me really interested, whilst 99 had the whole 'omg, all this is new n different' feel as I had only just found trance...

Last year was a corker, too many tunes for me to list.

5 years on and i aint sick of it yet, guess when you love something you really love it

Come on, there's like one of these threads every month, its just assholes trying to spark contraversy, nearly all the time its newbies. Obviously people who thought it would be funny to register on a trance site where a lot of people listen to uplifting trance, and then post a message like this and see their reactions.

Although I gotta admit, there's not much good uplifting around just now. Even Anjunabeats, one of the most consistent labels around IMO, managed to release a crapper (Velvet Morning) and then there's ASOT, the label of one of uplifting trance's best DJ's, and apart from one or two exceptions all it's giving us is predictable, boring stuff (although the other Armada labels are quite good)... but the genre's still far from dead.

Drunk

I have been here since the old days on Tranceaddict, and i have seen at least 10 threads similar. They have always been proven wrong, if u wanna ride progressives dick then you should have been here in 2001 when all the lamer prog heads said the same thing, then 2002 rolled around and prog was just a passing fad, wake up and realize that prog is just an adjective for house.

MIzz

LMAO that was pathetic!!!

Every Genre is at its low point right now and ....epic/melodic trance will be there so will prog plain and simple.... I just hate when kids trying to determine what prog and what the prog scene is when they dont have the slightest clue or involvment in the scene. But to say one genre of music is going out while the other isnt is bullshit because all genres are pretty much going down. I just personally rather listen to Prog then cheezy shit...

Posted by PETRAN on Mar-06-2004 06:00:

prog and trance my ass!

neo-italo-disco is the best!!!!loooooooooooooollll!

(now seriously i strongly suggest Legowelt, bangkog Impact, Felix da housecat and I-F to all of you epic-trance lovers!!! You will be thrilled by its great annthemic - and retro-futuristic- qualities!!!)
