Originally posted by BLuEOcEaN420 ive watched both the edited version of this movie and the director's cut.. and WOW.. it has got to be one of the most intense emotionally distrubing and graphic but powerful movie... i dont think u can watch this movie too many times just cuz there are so many little things that attracts your attention the more times u watch it... if u can bypass the initial shock or the disturbing feelings then do watch it more than once... i was in awe watching this movie and the cinematography of it... so unique.. like how the fridge would attack the mother, when she was all delerious from the drugs.... how when jennifer & jared were in bed togeather the way their hands moved across the body and etc. amazing sequence whenever they were thinking about drug or takin them they shows the syringe being filled up and the eyes dilating... the directors cut was by far more profound and graphic but then maybe again, it might just seem that way cuz i wasnt paying so close attention the first time around... some parts of the movie were just so grotesque and distrubing that i had a hard time stomaching it but others were just amazingly potrayed. anyone pick up at the end when all the characters are lying in the bed alone sorta cuddling their own body portraying the result of their addictions... man, that was powerful... the acting in this movie was amazing! esp ellen portraying the lonley ageing mother whose dream, to be on the show in her red dress worn to her son's graduation, had become a nightmare and causing her to become psychotic! damn,in the part where shes literally going insane looking like a homelss schizo on the subway, she had me totally convinced.. i was freaking out but yet part of me felt so sad and pitied her... jared leto also did an amazing job portryaing the son addicted to heroin.. so thin and gaunt u could see his bone jabbing outa him (but he still looked hot )... those u havent watched the movie. go watch it! the closer u are with the whole drug scene, the more impact this movie will have on u. even if have never touched drugs nor be around ppl that do, its still one hell of a movie. -BLuEOcEaN420 ~70278330~

hmm dude i totally agree... when the the mom was on the subway and everyone just thought she was cracked out.. i think was when i started crying lol.. and also after she runs outside from popping too many pills and those hosts were in her house.. when shes running and its winter and that song comes on... gawd. saddddd... i really hope their isnt doctors out there like that today. when she was telling him things just werent right and he didnt do shit about it... didnt even see how terrible and fucked up she was.

sorry to bring back this thread again , but i just saw the movie and i can tell you i'm pretty shocked even tho i never touched a drug in my life ... and i feel very depressed

good thing you brought this thread back, this movie is one of my favorites... i was depressed after i saw it too, and i never touched a drug in my life either

Damo: werd. that's why some of the greatest movies are those very underrated, and it's a good thing, because they're not getting raped by all the people that don't appreciate them for what they really are. not many people these days want to go to a movie and have to think about the plot.

great movie, one on my top three, along with donnie darko and vanilla sky. i love the dark movies that make you think like that. great stuff.

this movies not ment to be scary; i think its suppose to make you feel the crash you get after you trip like that, the movie is in like a sutle color and nothign really bright even that scene when hes the main character is on the roof with his girl its almost surreal. great cast esp waynes cuz he added flavor and diversity to it.

I dont think the movie is that good at all, itll get a passing mark, but that is about it

I thought the waynes would suck in it. Loved his comedy but thought he won't be able to act, but he did a wicked job on this movie .

Requiem for a dream was really good, one of the most depressing movies ive ever seen. (cant top Jude in that category though). That soundtrack was awesome too, I swear, that one song is so powerful it can make u form an emotional attachment to any image. For example, I just say a trailer for 'the two towers' recently after watching that movie, and they had an altered version of the main theme from requiem for a dream in the commercial. Even though I'd already seen the movie, I felt this POWERFUL urge to go see it again. .....needless to say strong piece.

And about Pi->WTF is with the end!!!

i read that its not so popular due to the fact that Darren Aronofsky did not want to give it an R rating (18 + only) and so it was just labelled an 'Arts movie' and hence did not get a big release. I dont bout anywhere else round the world but i dont remeber it being advertised anywhere. hmm trying to remember where i found the text that explained why Aronofsky didnt want to give it a rating: argh yes here it is:

(8/26/00) Well, the MPAA rejected the appeal, so Artisan will be releasing the film as "unrated" rather than going with an NC-17. That allows them to keep the film uncut, but limits the release greatly. Psychomatically, our bodies respond to things that press and challenge our emotional capacity, and somehow, this roller-coaster of a visually trance-like tragedy does just that. Let me explain that when I say "nausea" I don't mean "vomiting"; just a sense of physical unease... more like how Sartre meant it. Folks, if you're sitting there, somewhere, looking at a computer screen, reading this review, there's a good chance you have it good. There is a lot of misfortune in the world, but even many people who think they have it bad, have it relatively good to others. I'm thinking about the crack whores, raped prison lifers, braindead vegetables, and third-degree burn victims of the world. Those people have it bad, bad, bad; worse than we can possibly imagine. Many of the tragedies in the world are accidents; sad blunders of luck, but some, like the four stories in this film are the results of a chain of events that started off with "normal, everyday folks" and ended in the worst kind of way, and in a way, aren't accidental, which is maybe the saddest thing of all. These stories are parables to us of the roads best untaken. The film starts with Harry (Jared Leto) stealing his mother Sara's (Burstyn) TV so he can hock it and get some extra cash for drugs. He does this so often that Sara has an account with the pawnbroker. We're introduced to Harry's girlfriend Marion (Connelly) and his best friend, Tyrone (Wayans). At first, things are pretty normal... sure the kids do drugs, but they seem to "know what they're doing." Yeah, right. Early on, we're introduced to what will become the film's unrelenting chorus, as Aronofsky and editor Jay Rabinowitz (who may have an Oscar coming) have a field day, throwing fast, stunning images of the paraphernalia and effects of heroin (eyes dilating, blood coursing, etc). These sequences also work hand-in-hand with composer Clint Mansell's unrelenting score, also acclaim-worthy. It's all quite dizzying. Darren Aronofsky's first film, Pi, showed what a talented visual artist in the late 1990's could do with black & white film and a limited budget. One of the traits of a great film director is something that harkens to stage where there are no camera movements, etc. to be planned: the ability to help the actors be great. Ellen Burstyn gives one of the most harrowing, startling, and heart-rending performances of her career. Leaving the theater, I tried to remember another film that seemed so bleak and hopeless, and somehow The Excorsist came to mind, which (and this may be how I thought of it) of course she also starred in. Instead of the devil as a supernatural entity, Requiem gives us four people who are indeed "possessed", but their demons are rooted in concepts that we all might find too close to home: trying to lose weight, trying to make more money, doing whatever it takes not to lose your love. Yes, three of the characters either do (or sell) drugs for nearly the entire film, and ultimately, they all do. And yes, the pious among us can say "Ah, but I'd never do drugs." Great, then never go to a doctor again in your life, because sometimes... drugs happen. I remember a report on the evening news a few years ago that there is actually a high rate of drug addiction among senior citizens because they are so over-prescribed. One car accident, one operation, and any of us could be prescribed heavy painkillers... and that's where it all can start. It's scary, and these are the sort of things that run through your mind after seeing this film. "It could happen to you!" The other three performers who make up the lion's share of the story, Leto, Connelly, and Wayans are all effective as well. It was especially refreshing to see Marlon Wayans tackle a character of the depth and arc that he does here, after seeing him in mostly comedies like Scary Movie. Leto and Connelly share an on-screen chemistry that cements their storylines; and Jennifer Connelly's beauty is framed perfectly by Aronofsky's camera. There's some very careful makeup work done on all of the characters, with Connelly and Burstyn going through the most dramatic changes, though Connelly's is subtle, and not obvious at first. Leto's character has makeup that is a good part of what makes this film so powerful... I actually felt the audience flinch collectively. Ew. Requiem for a Dream, by its very nature, is a hard pill to swallow (drug ref. intended). It's very likely that it will not be released wide, which might have been true even if the film hadn't gotten an NC-17 which is leading Artisan to release it as "unrated." As a short note about that, I will say that I think this is a case where the MPAA is clearly not considering the value of art. Yes, there's a scene of sex near the end that is graphic and harrowing (involving Jennifer Connolly, another woman, and... I won't say). Yes, it's shocking, and darn right. This whole film is shocking; you're meant to be. That's the point... so why try to censor and control the art? It's possible that anyone who would be offended by that scene will probably walk (or run) out of the theater far before the film gets that far. Requiem for a Dream is up there with films like A Clockwork Orange and Trainspotting that will galvanize audiences. Some will detest it because the bleakness and horror of it all is just so, so much to take. Others, the majority, I think, are going to be enraptured by this very human, touching, and then devastating tale. Why is the film called Requiem for a Dream? Well, the title comes from the book, and it's probably even stranger that the book was called that because it doesn't have the music that propels this film. In the film, however, the four movements flow together back and forth like a symphony, until they all reach their climax at the same time in four different settings, four different tragedies, four different shocks and horrors. It's like seeing Beethoven's 5th reinterpreted through a 21st century, industrialized mindset, played over a film that reflects the power of the music... unforgettable.

that movie is a fuckin trip, especially if you are messed up, since the music is so great. i like it. this one song in the movie, i wish it would be re created into a trance or breakbeat song, coney island dreaming, the song where he smokes weed, and then sees his girflriend on the pier, that is the cool one. also i think it did get an R rating, only it was an independent film (had to watch it at Lamelle). I have the directors cut at home, its more graphic.

dude i didn't see Event Horizon , but as for the other movies you said comparing to Requiem for a Dream they are mickey mouse

I saw this in highschool last year in my media class, everyone felt sorta I don't know not-good after leaving the cinema... It's a "powerful" movie that injects itself into your head, and stays there.


I know some of my fellow students doing drugs really became messed up after seeing it

i must pay my respect to requiem for a dream. it was an unbelievable movie and remains on my list of incredible movies one must watch. the theme song lux aeterna is forever ingrained in my head...so haunting, yet so beautiful...

yea, first time i saw this movie i couldn't sleep. We were at my friends house, 3 of us, doing nothing but getting high. We decided to go rent a movie, but didn't know what to rent. So one of my friends decided to rent that; it was in the drama section so I was like "awwwwwww man! wtf is this bs!".

Needless to say, after that movie and 3 joints, I was scarred I love it.

don't forget pulp fiction. a lot of the older movies that revolutionized film in both hollywood and non-hollywood alike.

I can imagine! I was so glad I didn't do drugs after I had seen that movie, then I didn't at least have that movie haunting me...
