nothing is wrong with me. Almost all the French fans on here are going on about how great Zidane and Barthez were and how they outplayed England. It's absolute crap. It was luck..pure and simple luck. Zidane is a great player and came through when given the opportunity. France did not win this game...England lost it. there is a huge difference.

Bloody hell...you're all acting as if this was the final. If France play like that again, they won't be making anything.

Creating a thread just for complaining about your defeat is certainly the most arrogant thing I've never seen. French wouldn't have done it because we're fair play and able to accept a defeat.

And don't tell me that nobody like French and France. As the official sucker of the USA, England is certainly not much appreciated all over the world.

So don't worry for France, we're able to win trophies, the last one you won was World Cup 1966...

In Paul Robinson we have a keeper that is more than capable of stepping up in place of James. I have never particularly liked James, but i do not see why people have it in for him at the moment. He made mistakes in the past but lately he has been ok.

Yes James should have been sent. Henry was through on goal and James colided with him, blatent penalty and sending off. It was the last kick of the game so a different keeper would have made no difference really, unless he saved the penalty.

Silvestre should also have been sent off too. When Rooney ran past him he was the last man. Henry was behind the play and only after Rooney was on the floor did Henry arrive in the box next to the play. Thats why the referee didnt send of James, because he just squared it all up.

Let the french gloat all they want. In all fairness, people were saying England would get beat, 3-1, 2-0, etc... and we put on a great tactical display in which every player for 90 mins did their job. Zidane and his creativity did nothing all match until he was able to be at a dead ball situation. Both his free kick and his penalty were unstoppable.

We'll meet you in the final (if you get there! )

What a hypocritical post, you've managed to contradict yourself within the space of a few lines.

Both challenges were red card offences, there's no doubt about that.

Silvestre has said himself he was surprised when he only got a yellow card and said he assumes the referees have been given instructions to be more lenient.

The referee didn't lose us the game, England self-destructed (French fans can't seem to accept this, even though they won), but he certainly impacted on its result.

Posted by razmataz on Jun-15-2004 15:15:

Fact: both France and England played a crap game.

The difference was England gave the game away with a needless foul, backpass and a missed penalty. They somehow managed to, as the saying goes, snatch defeat from the jaws of victory...

It says a lot about the game when all the goals and clear chances were from dead-ball situations...

I enjoyed it personally, lots of drama, tension and an ending to boot...

Anyway he's been chosen, so 2 possibilities:
- you don't have any best player than this donkey at this place...
- your coach is an idiot.

The fact is that most of the posts I've read here or there are complaints and tries to find any excuse to explain this or that. We dominated all the match, we had a lot of problems with your excellent compact defence which blocked our numerous attacks, you scored a nice goal and succeeded in keeping the result for 90mn. The referee has nothing to do in Zidane's free kick, as Silvestre didn't help during the action, and as his expulsion wouldn't have changed anything to the motivation of our attacks. And our penalty was as fair as Beckham's one.

We have been able to keep a strong mind during all the game, and a bit of luck, which is a component of most sports. So I understand you're disappointed, but you should be fair play and not try to kick our team like most of you do. Take example on guys like Ian^ or Coup who have been perfectly fair-play after the results, despite their disappointment. And don't forget: that's just football, that doesn't deserve personal insults.

In what sense is this match related to the 2002 World Cup quarterfinals in which Brazil defeated England (2:1), apart from the score?

That's the last match England played against the world's best football team (Brazil: 5 World Cups - including the last one). France's got Europe's best squad and it can be compared to Brazil's team, but that quote is a wee bit exagerated (sp?). Based on what did he say it? (Regional titles don't count)

This discussion is fun though... reminds me of our neighbours (poor Argentinians, tsk, tsk, tsk ).

Posted by sleepydragon on Jun-15-2004 21:14:

why r u looking to blame over people for england screwing up the match
1\ France played better in the second half
2\ Beckham missed a penalty
3\ Heskey gave away a stupid free kick to let france score
4\ david james had poor positioning for the free kick
and finally
5\ gerrard totally screwed up to hand france a penalty

so stop trying to blame other people like the ref england screwed up big time and thats final

Eat your fucking loss and stop crying about it.

and yes I hate the english team they're a bunch of malicious 'wankers'
same goes to the supporters. EAT IT! +2 FOR ZIDANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by evil_bastard on Jun-15-2004 23:37:

I began this thread to highlight my displeasure at a crucial turning point of a heated and controversial game of football. Nobody has laid blame solely at the referee, many factors contributed to the final result but I saw the penalty incident as the most crucial and controversial in the game, the turning point and therefore worth discussing on a sports discussion forum. It seems some people have completely missed the point and taken the opportunity to resort to insults before telling others to behave graciously in defeat, which is pretty hypocritical.

I don't believe France won the game, rather I believe England lost it, if you get what I mean. We self-destructed in spectacular style. I find it ironic that some French people are calling on us to "accept defeat", to be gracious and respectful of our opponents, yet fail to do the same! Perhaps England fans wouldn't behave so hostile if they weren't faced with such pathetic hypocrisy and pretentiousness. As I stated in my first post, I'm not overly concerned with who 'deserved' the win, England and France on the day were two very evenly matched teams who struggled to break each other down. Some of the French gloat of how their side "completely dominated" the game, and insist English people "accept" this was the case. Well I'm sorry to piss on your bonfire but England gave a very good account of themselves limiting France to just one chance in 90 minutes of open play and I will discuss the nature of our defeats just like I discuss our victories. You can call that "crying", "whinging", "excuses", call it what you want, I've come here to discuss the game not hide under pretentious bullshit and chivalry.

luck because Heskey was stupid enough to make an aggressive challenge from behind. You got a call from the ref, the French players didn't break through the English defence. As I said, as much as it pains me, the English players COLLAPSED and lost the game for themselves.

you obviously don't know the game well if you think England got "owned". Have you ever played it or watched football in the US? oh wait...they call it soccer down there.

whys that lucky? heskey gave away a free kick and zidane superbly finished it i dont call that luck i call it stupidity on heskeys behalf

Posted by evil_bastard on Jun-16-2004 23:57:

The keeper and wall setup for Zidane's freekick was terible, the free kick was hardly top corner, it was nearer the centre of the goal. As Schmeichel analysed afterwards, in those situations you're supposed to trust your wall to cover one half of the goal and you the keeper cover the other. If he puts it over your wall to your opposite post there's nothing you can do about that, it's the chance you take. James arranged it this way, but then before the kick drifted back over into the very centre of his goal leaving the whole right side exposed. Zidane saw a big gap in the wall, he whipped in a quick shot and it was 1-1.

You can see the severe gap in the wall here, and also look at the keeper's positioning behind, Zidane had half an empty goal to aim at it was awful defending of a free-kick.

As for Heskey's challenge, we've come to expect this sort of thing from him. Everybody was holding their breath when he came on just waiting for a mistake to happen, he's such an error prone player. I can't believe Heskey is in the England squad while the likes of Beattie, Smith and Ameobi aren't.
