Please support this statement with a proof, specifically "profiling purposes".

Well let's see, here's from Google's very own gmail web page:

Now how would you say this is possible if they aren't profiling you?

Here's another little tidbit from their privacy policy - I wonder if any of you bothered to read it:

quote:
Email contents and usage. The contents of your Gmail account also are stored and maintained on Google servers in order to provide the service. Google's computers process the information in your email for various purposes, including formatting and displaying the information to you, delivering targeted related information (such as advertisements and related links), preventing unsolicited bulk email (spam), backing up your email, and other purposes relating to offering you Gmail. Because we keep back-up copies of data for the purposes of recovery from errors or system failure, residual copies of email may remain on our systems for some time, even after you have deleted messages from your mailbox or after the termination of your account. Google employees do not access the content of any mailboxes unless you specifically request them to do so (for example, if you are having technical difficulties accessing your account) or if required by law, to maintain our system, or to protect Google or the public.

We also may collect information about the use of your account, such as how much storage you are using, how often you log in and other information related to your registration and use of Gmail. Information displayed or clicked on in your Gmail account (including UI elements, ads, links, and other information) is also recorded. We use this information internally to deliver the best possible service to you, such as improving the Gmail user interface, preventing fraud within our advertising system, and better targeting related information.

So let's see here:

You can take everything they say at face value if you want, but to do that you'd have to be either very naive or just extremely inexperienced with legal boilerplate. There are always loopholes in any privacy policy that Google can exploit if they deem it profitable. They certainly managed to pull off this kind of corporate whoring with their search engine without anyone even noticing for several months.

Come on, do you honestly think that Google staff are offering this out of the goodness of their hearts? They're a profit-driven company like any other!

I'm not expecting to convince anyone here not to use gmail, but I sure as hell am never going to go near it. I get 50 free mailboxes or forwarding addresses with my webhosting package that I can also access through their web portal, and those suit me just fine. Anybody can get high-quality, ad-free e-mail for just a couple of bucks per year - it's really amazing what people will do to save such a petty sum of money while simultaneously wasting ten times as much on cheap thrills, overpriced drinks and gimmicky gadgets.

And now you can get notified when a new e-mail arrives. Just like on msn/yahoo : http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/

There have been other gmail notifiers but this one is from google itself, it's still beta but should be good in the future.

Hey Durafei, where should I send you my feature request list...

Dunno

Hey what gives...

I'm trying to send a zip file to my gmail account and it tells me that i'm sending an illegal attachment?!?!

Anyone knows what's this all about?

*EDIT*

Nevermind I know why it bounced it back - it saw something it didn't like inside the zipped file...wow how smart, I'm impressed. Although it's a little disappointing cause I can't send those type of files TO my gmail account.

A part of a zipped project that was containing some ASP.NET files and other vb files and maybe some executables that (after i read some documentation) I realized google doesn't accept.

Ok.. I was worried for a second that it doesn't accept MP3s.

What's the limit on size of an email on gmail.com? 10MB or something?

That depends on the attachment. With Gmail, you can send and receive messages up to 10 megabytes (MB) in size.

When you add an attachment, the size of a file may increase because transport encodings (the information that allows your message to be safely sent and read) are automatically added.

This means that in some cases, attachments that are 6 to 10MB in size may push the total message size above 10MB. When this happens, Gmail displays a warning that your message exceeds the 10MB limit.

However... some dude(not related to Google) already implemented a file system that uses Gmail account for storage. Using this thing, you can write and retrieve files of any size. All interaction with Gmail in this case is done invisible from you.

The best thing to do to get around this is to put a password on the zip file.

tsk tsk. How long has it been since they promised this?

"In addition to delivering world-class antivirus protection, you can also look forward to an upgrade in your storage capacity. In fact, you'll receive 125 times your current email storage with the introduction of a 250 MB inbox as well as the ability to send attachments up to 10 MB." - Received July 4, 2004 12:30:27 PM

well, I just tried to send an 11MB zip file and it bounced back with an error message.

What's the purpose of having 2GB of storage in my inbox when the biggest email I can receive is 10MB? Heck, I can have that with my Rogers account as well, no need for signing up for gmail...

I read about it a while ago , how cool of a hack is that?

What does google say about it though? , I know they don't like 3rd parties hooking up to gmail directly.

Yeah, technically it's illegal to use gmail for purposes other than e-mail.

I haven't heard any comments about this from anyone though. Personally, I don't think that this kind of use of Gmail is too big of an issue for Google now to worry about it too much.

Read this:

Looks like that very soon you'll have to pay for the ability to integrate outlook with hotmail.
