DJ Octane, what you played at Spiro's was REALLY good. And if I'm not wrong on this, you were playing what YOU liked. Given, me and Aaron were the only one's on the dance floor, but that was some good shit! I think that's what Nuno likes too. Just mix in a vocal track every 3 songs or so. I mean Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, and Armin Van Buuren pretty much decide what's popular by if they playlist it or not.
It's all about making a good set. I know that in 45 minutes this is nearly impossible, but it can be done.
But if you are at a club in a mainstream croud, you can't be playing that progressive deep dark-like trance that only appeals to VERY few.
And I'm sorry to break this to you, but people like music they can sing along too. I got several compliments for throwing down Lasgo - Surrender (Cor Finjeman Remix). Yes, it's Lasgo, but also, it was a great remix by one of Tiesto's best friends.
And what the hell is up with insulting AdaLovelace for just stating her opinion! She wasn't insulting any of you. She's the one that has been most supportive of this night. She just doesn't want to see it die.
And with some of the people's attitudes here, they're doing a good job at killing it. But you will not defeat trance, and with the conversation that me and Nuno had Friday night, I don't see trance nation going anywhere! But Djs that are in trance nation, I could see some of them more concerned with "their style" then actually being heard and liked by others.
It's just another sub-genre! It's not selling out. Besides, tell me how mainstream vocal trance is popular in the states... It's not! So can you even call anything that's trance mainstream?! What's mainstream is that rap crap that's so popular these days.

I know you think you're every clever and cute by posting huge pictures that take forever to load in an attempt to piss off or frustrate people, but it's stupid.
Try looking at things from other people's viewpoint. You'll get along more in life and it will be much happier too. Or you can just continue to be so wrapped up in your own opinion that you just think everyone who disagrees with it is a fucktard. You can do that too! No one here is insulting you! You can calm down.
But please, no big obnoxious pictures. They're a pain to have to scroll past and have load.

Hoyt, thank you for the compliments on the set. It means a lot coming from another DJ on the frontline.
I understand your point about seeing things from a different viewpoint. I just ask that you see things from mine. There are people that defend vocal trance and try to champion respect for it, yet the same respect is not given to epic trance. We are told that because its not a classic or doesn't have vocals that its not good. I know how you feel, believe me. I deal with this on a daily basis. I don't feel what I play is deep or dark. In fact, a lot of the tracks I play make me feel happy and positive. It is a blow to my self-esteem when I put my heart and soul into selecting tracks and after I play them, having them dismissed by the general public. It makes me feel rejected, unwanted, and inadequate. I don't deserve to feel that way. I'm being a bit dramatic, but you get the point. It works both ways guys.
I hope this doesn't get out of hand. Hoyt, I have the utmost repect for your girlfriend. She supports you every week. That is the definition of a great woman. We should all be so lucky. As I said before, if things don't work out, I know Fridays will be just fine in your hands and I will still make it out to support you.
And no, not all popular stuff is cheese, but almost all cheese is popular. Tiseto can kiss my ass though. Ferry is God.

since when is one person's opinion of what is good or not the important issue? we all have our paths in life and no one's is any better than the others (regardless if you like IvD or Randy Katana). a few suggestions were made then some poo was flung and now this. in closing, let's try to get back on track of having fun and supporting each other, regardless of our opinions. it's not like anyone here is a felon, or rapist or something. :-)

Lovelace I completely disagree with you, but that's not to say I have any hard feelings. This whole discussion is just furthur evidence to me that the Nuno's trance night experiment is going in a direction that I don't want to go in. Good luck to it, and good luck to you Hoyt. If it wasn't for you then Octane and I probably wouldn't have come across this opportunity, and I thank you for that.
As for the whole debate over vocal trance, popular trance, what is mainstream and what is not... this is how I see it -
I like what I like, not what people tell me is trash because it's popular, or what people tell me is good because it's popular. As a trance DJ, not a club DJ (as Dave put it), my purpose is to express myself to a crowd who digs what I play, or appreciates it on some level. Being told what to play is fine to a certain extent, like "play uplifting trance not progressive trance", but not really any more particularly than that. At nuno's, we (all the DJs) are being told to play vocal trance, or "classics" (aka 'tracks that the crowd will know'), and there are two things you have to keep in mind -
1 - the crowd that currently frequents the place on friday nights is completely incompatible with what I mistakenly believed to be the whole point of Trance Nation fridays. They aren't into the music so how the hell is it our responsibility to get them to dance? I honestly do not know how it can be done.
2 - the people telling us what to play have little knowledge of trance and thus little knowledge of the appropriate crowd to attract to the venue. I don't know how this can be so, but it seems that the efforts being made to attract more people to the venue (eg, drinking games) will only result in a bigger turn out of the same sort of people.
The point I want to stress the most is this. The direction in which the management is taking Trance Nation fridays is incompatible with me as a DJ, and as someone who loves trance music. I see now that there is but minuscule hope of ever having a crowd of people attending the night that is loyal to trance music at all. That is the fundamental basis for why people aren't dancing. This is why I don't feel Nuno's is my place, because if I continued to DJ there I would no longer be a trance DJ. For me, at that point it would no longer be worth supporting with my time, my money, or my effort.

I figured things would go this way after Kyle left... no hard feeling to Nuno or anything he has to do what he needs to do to make money but I don't really think that involves Trance anymore so.
