Being poorer or richer has nothing to do with standard of living--which the list shows.

For information on how to measure the Standard of Living, download this pdf file.

For the complete list and breakdown of the Human Development Index, download this pdf file.

cypras, so much better, yes its poor, but everyone is so layed back, and then there is greese. Oh the food

Posted by blazed it on Aug-05-2004 15:46:

ya know i just can't believe canadian slums can be worse than american slums, granted i've only been to canada like twice and only for a few days. But man the "inner cities" are so crap in the large metropolitan areas of the U.S.

but yeah if you are at least middle class it's not so bad in america, as long as you have a job that covers health insurance and your kids don't go to college. if you're middle class and you're kids are going to college you get raped.

america is the best place in the world to live if you are motivated and have the stones to make it in a true market coordinated economy.

it's the worst place to live if you're a lazy bum.

and it's the exact opposite for Scandinavia.

Posted by occrider on Aug-05-2004 20:44:

Well GDP per capita isn't the greatest of measures to use. I would say the UN development report is fairly good with its calculations. As someone stated before, however, the top 10 countries are typically the one and the same since the HD indexes have miniscule variances at that point.

5.6%. Do you know what your unemployment rate is? I think not since you asked that question.

Canadians go to the US for premium health care services

Agreed. Its a fucking shithole. The girls arent nice - I dont care what the fuck the rest of the world says.

The only reason someone should like living in Ireland is if they have some fetish about modems, slow Internet access and vastly overpriced broadband.

Presumably because its near damn impossible to get a license to live there permenantly!

So is like the internet your whole life, and the determinate of what makes a good place? How exciting.

I've met heaps of hot, easy going girls from Ireland, and unless the magically change when they arrive in Australia, I'm figuring there are some there also.

What's the use of being at the top of such list? Take Japan, for example. Those guys work hard but many Brazilians who come back from there say that they're extremely stressed and work their arses in order to live. Sweden is famous worldwide for its cases of depression and suicide. No offense to those who live in these countries (I would even like to go to these places someday), but there's nothing like living in a laid back culture where we actually enjoy our reasonable quality of life, weather and friendship... I really don't understand why work so hard if you can't fully enjoy what you're working for till you retire. Not to mention that many parts of Brazil can be compared to most European countries (but the northern parts of the country take us back to the middle of the list because they're blatantly poorer)

At least, that's how we see it.

edit: Just realised I spelled something wrong.
