"A Break In The Clouds" is a perennial favorite here.

quote:
REGARDING "A Break in the Clouds", i like it because it also has a melody... not so overt and perhaps not so catchy, but memorable, if not hummable (boy does it move past). The track for me *unifies* what have often been considered to be strangely separate elements of dance music stylistics -- for further evidence of this, the Beats Mix highlights the more tech-y minimalist foundation the track is based on and the Ambient Version is a showcase and testament to the rich, drenched echoey melody.

Not ONLY that, the track has a unique building structure... it takes forever seemingly for that main melody to kick in, but when it does, it is a wonderful moment and revelation. In the meantime however, it's not just a beat and bassline, but many intricate elements moving in and out... even weird "stutters" in a perhaps BT-ish kind of way that keep interest high as various hi-hats and acid (which is another element) stabs are stretched out and manipulated to add a little twist to the solid bottom of the track. Production-wise it seems very intricate to me, without resorting to overt playing around with the sounds randomly just to sound "computer cool" IMHO.

There are also weird atmospheres and ambiences and swirl around like... well, clouds! And I must mention again, the beat... it hops like a bunny, bummmm bummm ba dooo pa do pa... but in spite of all these technical details... "A Break in the Clouds" appeals to me simply and straightforwardly. It's honest, it's different, it's a little quirky but not too far out there -- it doesn't try to be clever and cute, but it is, and that's why I enjoy it so much.

Ahhh, fond memories of good times.

I agree

hmm.. soo many to choose from... i think it's kinda of obvious that the most complex track must be a goa track (yes, im prob. bias; notice the sig) but i dont know which one... some productions by both astral projection and mfg are heavily layered with melodies upon melodies. most of the new psytrance is just a mass of samples put together- but i love the driving bass. but yeah- def. some goa track. xpander is a good choice, but there is so much more when you step into goa.

Agreed with "And The Day Turned To Night", but if we're including IDM here, Aphex wins.
