Well, since nobody has stepped up to do a review, I guess I can. We skipped Sat, but went Sunday. Talked to some people who saw Digweed and some liked it / some did not. It all seemed to depend on what style they liked.
BT cancelled last minute. He was replaced by Monk.
Picotto was bangin'. He looks younger in real life to me at least. He mixed in nicely to the orginal club version of Blue Monday and ended with some great techno songs, I don't know techno too well though.
Ferry, well, he never disappoints. The set up was in a tent. The system there was loud but a little distorted IMO. The lasers were pretty decent. It was nice to see all the colors. It was great to see that Ferry had a good amount of fans at Voodoo. Ferry did get the crowd going right away. Many were chanting Ferry through out his set. I did not know his opening track but we found out later: Rapid Eye - Absoulte (i think). When we were talking to him, you could tell he was worn out from the past several nights. But he went out of his way to talk to his fans and take a few pics even though security was getting everybody out. He played a cool remix of In a State - UNKLE with no vocals, but still had the guitar. I recognized the incoming melody right away, but had never heard that version before. It turns out it was an Oakenfold remix. He did not play Force of Gravity as I would have expected, maybe he was upset at BT not being there.Haha
The crowd went nuts when he played Gouryella - Ligaya. I don't know if it was a different remix or not. He also played that new remix of Synesthasia (sp?) by Thrillseekers, I think. He played some Marco V song, not Del mp3. It was a short set. Toward the end he played right of way, it's time. He encored with Rock your Body and the played a few minutes of Punk before fading it out, I'm sure at the security's insistence. He made price of admission worth it. My girl thanked him for coming to New Orleans and he seemed very happy about it. One negative was that you could barely see the DJ spinning due to the lighting. All you could see was a shadow or a silohuette. So you could not really see him smiling or gesturing or even raising his hands, even if you were upfront. But you could still feel the vibe and it was great.
WHAT A FK'N WEEKEND! I had a blast. This was by far the best music event I have ever attended.
We got to New Orleans on Friday the 15th. We got there at about 11 pm and headed out to Bourbon St. and had a couple of drinks and checked out the ladies. If you guys are ever on Bourbon St buy a drink called a handgrenade @ The Tropical Isle. Trust me this thing does the trick.
So anyway we participated in various Bourbon St antics then headead off back to the hotel @ about 6 A.M.
On Sat the 16th we headed off for the Voodoo Fest early in the afternoon. We caught a couple of acts like Sugarcult, New Found Glory then we went off to check out MIX MASTER MIKE. OMFG DOES THIS MAN HAVE SOME SKILLS! Then we headed off to check out Talib Kweli. After that I had to make a decision if I should see Digweed or Green Day after much debating we decided to go check out Green Day. We can always check out Digweed some other time. Green Day were teh highlight of the night for me and Dave and I jumped in the mosh pit during BASKET CASE ! The guys put on hell of a show. Anyway after Green Day were the Beastie Boys and Mix Master Mike. The crowd was so hyped after seeing Green Day and it just carried through well into the Beastie gig.
Sunday the 17th:
Headed out to the festival late in teh afternoon and checked out De la Soul. Afterwards we headed off to check out what we though was going to be BT but we were dissapointed to find out that BT was not going to be there.
So the rest of the guys chilled to wait for Mauro Picotto and Ferry gigs. I on the other hand went to see VELVET REVOLVER! This was a really tough choice but VR was the one band that I just HAD to see.
VR were absolutely amazing! It was the 2nd night of their tour and they were excited as hell to be there. The crowd went absolutely nuts! SLASH IS A GOD ! After VR was Kid Rock so I didnt stick around for that one. I went to check out Ferry Corsten and of course he never dissapoints.
Tracks I can recall:
Marco V - Automanual
Ferry Corsten - Rock Your Body Rock
Ferry Corsten - Punk
Thrillseekers - Synesthesia 2004 (Ferry Corsten Remix)
Ferry Corsten - Right of Way
and a bunch of newer tracks that I couldnt ID.
PS I really dont think there is an Oakenfold remix of Unkle - In A State or that it was played at all for that matter.
Anyway I had a fk'n blast and great company all around. Cant wait to do it all again next year !
Joel pretty much summed up the trip for us...but here is my 2 cents:
On day 1, I was really torn between Green Day and Digweed. I had never seen Digweed before and really wanted to see him play, but Green day was the victor. They played an awesome set and entertained the crowd to no end. They totally owned when they covered Queen - We Are The Champions. People had lighters going and hands were swaying and it was just awe inspiring. Then Joel and I kicked some ass in the pit. had to balance things out. Beasties played a hell of a show and Mix Master Mike was educating everyone on turntablism. The man is a living legend. Big Props to New Found Glory as well. I had never seent hem before and was impressed.
On Day 2, we went straight to see De La Soul. I wanted to leave a bit early to see BT and ran into my friend Blake (Sir Jackson) from Austin. I almost crapped my pants. It was good to see him. Well, he told me had seen Monk at Ampersands on Friday night and I didn't pay much mind to it till I saw Monk up on stage. I put 2 and 2 together and told Joel that BT cancelled. He took off for Velvet Revolver and I stayed to check Monk out. He started off with some Hard Techno and played a bit of everything before finishing with some really evil Drum n Bass. I really enjoyed his set. After Monk, people took off and I was able to stand right in front of the DJ booth to see the main reason I drove 9 hours to New Orleans...Mauro Picotto!!! I didn't really see anyone giving the man his proper respect so I started some Mauro chants and made sure he felt welcome. He seemed kinda surprised that people in the crowd knew who he was. He proceeded to rinse the system out with some Techno and I seem to recall at least 2 Trancey songs. He did play a couple Tech House tracks, but did not disappoint in the least. I don't think many people really understood how much of a treat it was to see Mauro, so I may have looked a bit foolish jumping up and down pumping my fists like a madman, but the man deserves it. He waved at me as he was leaving and it made me feel good to know he ackowledged me paying my respects to him. Then Ferry came on and played a good set as well. I made sure we chanted for him as well and when he played Mirco de Govia - Voller Sterne, I motioned to the record, clapped my hands and threw him a thumbs up. He laughed and concurred that the track was major choonage. All in all, I loved his set, but other than Voller Sterne, nothing really impacted me as I had heard most of the tracks before. My satisfaction came more from seeing Mauro and Ferry in the flesh working the tables than what they were actually playing. Ferry could play an old DeBarge track and I would be happy, which reminds me of Mauro playing New Order - Blue Monday (OLD SCHOOL!!!). Good sets by all DJs and bands.
After the show, Joel, myself and some friends proceeded to get more drunk at Bourbon St. When we were leaving, I saw Monk and walked up to him to pay my respects. I told him he played a really good set and that I was sorry to have missed him in SA, but that I made up for it that night. He thanked me for the compliments and we drove back to the hotel to rest for the long way home.
Top Performances:
Beastie Boys
Green Day
Mauro
Ferry
New Found Glory
Mix Master Mike (solo set)
Ehhhhh...It was OK:
Sonic Youth
I had a blast in the Big Easy and wished I could have met some of you guys that went out. We'll have to meet up some other time.
Yeah, we stayed for 10 minutes and left. They were a bit too downtempo for me at that moment in time. They were still good though.
It was funny that my friend wanted to pimp slap a kid who asked, "Who the hell is Sonic Youth?" LOL
I guess he felt old. I just felt educated.

In regards to Ferry's set, I could be wrong about the In a State remix. It was his third track I believe, and it certainly sounded like it except for the vocals. The acoustic guitar was certianly there. I asked Ferry about it and he acknowledged that he played In as State. I had been thinking that Ferry had made a bootleg, but he said it was Oakenfold's, but maybe I misunderstood him. If anybody knows for sure, let us know.
Phw0ar, great reviews Joel & Julio, glad you guys had such a awesome time! You'll have to tell me more in detail, I'm sure there were many more antics involved.. muahahah. Hopefully next year there'll be another top lineup and I too will be in attendance. See ya'round carnts
PVD cancelling pissed me off but I was thinking, hey it'll still be cool with BT Mauro and Ferry....BT also cancelled and a bunch of people left really pissed off...that was really bad!
Mauro rocked it! He dropped that song with the Steve Winwood sample Valerie (Call on Me)...the place was jumpin.
Ferry came on and I was hopin he would stick to uplifting trance and he started off that way...I was jumpin up and down like mad. The first two tracks were great, especially track 2 (ID!!!) and then he moved into a vocal track (Jan Johnston???) and then into SB vs SS - Red Line Highway. Awesome track...then moved into a track I knew he'd spin and that was his remix of synaestheisa. Afterwards it was Voller Sterne Super 8 remix. Awesome track indeed. He then started goin in the direction I hoped he wouldn't...
I forget the tracklisting after this point cus I completly lost interest.
He started dropping tracks like Rock Your Body Rock, Punk, and It's Time...God I fucking hate those tracks...I fucking hate them with a passion. How the Fuck can people go nutts to shit like that...I turned to my friend who was also having a good time before and he looked at me and was like, "what the fuck? what happened to the quality tunes?" He's not a huge trance fan like me to know all that's out there, but he knew the quality tunes and he knew what was bad...and the shit at the end was bad!
Anyways, I know a lot of people like those tracks, so it wasn't surprising to see people still goin nutts and singing to that awful robotic voice in Rock Your Body Rock. But I did get to dance to atleast 45 min of quality Ferry and an entire quality Mauro set.
Anyways, If people are lookin for a trakclist for Ferry, here's what I got so far
1. ID
2. ID
3. Vocal track
4. Scott Bond Vs. Solar Stone - Red Line Highway
5. Thrillseekers - Syneasthesia(Ferry Corsten Remix)
6. Mirco de Govia - Voller Sterne(Super 8 Remix)
Tracks following this were:
Gouryella - Ligaya???
Ferry Corsten - Rock Your Body Rock
Ferry Corsten - It's Time(Ferry's Flashover Mix)
Ferry Corsten - Punk
Anyways, it was still a rockin good time thanks to Mauro and half of Ferry. On the drive back home, I put in Sasha - Involver for the first time and listened to the whole thing about 3 times before deciding to change the cd. Good Stuff
Dude go easy on Ferry's electro flavour, you don't have to like it but have some respect cos many people do, and more importantly, Ferry deserves it.
So YOU were the guy rolling your eyes at your friend when he started playing his own tracks. I was the tall Mexican guy in the yellow shirt next to ya if you were up front. I figured you weren't feeling those tracks by the way you kinda just stood there...I'm glad you dug the first half of his set though, it was good stuff.
I kinda wished he had played other stuff, but I understand that not everyone has access to mp3s galore and Trance websites such as this to feed their needs. Not everyone sees his tracks as "old news" like some do. I have heard his tracks more than enough times and I will say they don't have the "new track" scent on them anymore, but dude....Ferry Corsten was 15 feet away from you in the flesh. That alone spells great night.
Also, don't be so hard on the guy. I'm not sure of the reasons you stopped having fun during his set, but try not to pigeonhole the guy for trying to do something different. Typecasting sucks and lots of people are doing that to Ferry. If you don't care for the "mainstream" stuff and wanted to hear more underground, then I feel ya a bit on that. Too bad he only had an hour and a half. I'm sure he would have played more "underground" stuff had he been given more time. Just try to appreciate the fact he took the offer to play or else we may have had to endure DJ Sammy or Ian Van Dahl or something.
Well, I was wrong about that In a State track. It actually was the Carlos Vives track Como Tu Oakenfold remix, except it had no vocals or if there were any we didn't notice. It did sound pretty good live. Sorry for the confusion. I feel like a noob, but in my defense there are some similarities, although I think In a State Sasha remix is a better track.
After I posted, I realized I did say some things in the wrong way...they are only my opinions and I do realize a lot of people like those tunes. But I really don't like them and it was hard to get into the set when he dropped them. Doing things different is good. It is very good for the scene, but I didn't like his approach to doing things differently. Again, it is my opinion only.
I am very much into various styles of music and not just uplifting typical ASOT stuff (not that you were insinuating I was). I really enjoyed the first bit of his set, it's why I wanted to see Ferry just like why I would want to see Armin. But it's just those few tracks he's made that have no appeal to me....and he dropped all of them at the end which was a bummer. The night as a whole was great and very much worth a 9 hour drive from St. Louis and a 12 hour non-stop drive to Indiana where my friend goes to school (had to drive non stop sun night to get him back to class by Mon...craziness).
But yes, sorry if I came across as just tearin Ferry down. I really do have much respect for the guy....just not those particular tracks. Only other downer was not hearin some Sweetest Dreams but whatcha gonna do.
Whoever replied and said "you were the guy I saw..." hopefully you don't remember me as an idiot who just stood there the whole time cus I really was into everything earlier, including Mauro. Everyone around me was also havin a good time and I enjoyed havin a good time around you as well...wherever you were in the crowd!
No worries mate. You just come off as VERY educated about your Trance. I didn't like his new songs either when I first heard them. I guess they grew on me. It was fun partying with ya and hope to do it again sometime. Peace bro.
Me and a few friends made it out the new orleans as well. After a tiring 14 hour drive from lubbock I would have to say it was worth it.
While I caught bits and pieces of some of the DJs, I'll have to say this.
For all the talk I've heard of digweed, his set wasn't impressive. Nor did he seem to make any effort to get the crowd going at all. I could have missed it if he did, on my walk back from other bands.
I enjoyed Monk's set, the only song that I remember is the remix of "seven nation army" which i've heard somewhere before. Not to say that was the best song, but my memory is shitty to say the least.
Ferry was great to see, as someone mentioned earlier he played some of his more well known tracks (rock your body rock, punk, right of way) but seeing him for the first time I was happy to hear these tracks. (call me what you will I love these tracks, although rock your body has lost its touch)
As for the Bands, hands down Green Day put on the best show, props to those kids who were fortunate enough to get on stage and play their instruments (how lucky was that kid to keep his guitar!?!)
Beastie Boys were awesome, mix master mike is the shit.
Cypress Hill, had to check them out for a little bit.
The Pixies were pretty good too.
If anyone was in the Dj tent watching the people spinnin Poi(glowsticks for the lay men(sp?)), A buddy of mine was tearin it up. The most prominent move I can think of was when he was spinning them and then proceeded to do a front roll on the ground while still spinning as well.

| Originally posted by Matthias I know you already took up for this in a second post..and that this is your opinion...but here is MY 2 cents on this. Given that all of the above mentioned tracks were written by Ferry Corsten himself, he has all the right to play them in the set. Music is always subjective. Every genre down to every track has its..fanbase and those who totally oppose hearing them. That is why Djing and producing are so challenging, even after years of practicing, getting down the technical side of it to where you can mix with your eyes closed if you wanted to; there will still be a percentage on either side of the coin that no matter what tracks you play...you'll always get docked for it. I've learned ya can't please everyone..and just play what I feel; but yeah Ferry's newer production is more electro then it is trance. Some like it, some don't..but it doesn't make it crap. That's just where his heart is. I didn't make this post to attack you or defend ferry...just my opinion on the art itself. If you don't like his tracks..that fine. Personally I feel they aren't the greatest.. Indigio was a track I was never able to get into; but I respect any artist that DOES produce and bring ideas to the table rather than simply play others tracks. |
ditto Matt
