Crime is not directly related to economics.

Also, compare Rosedale to Jarvis/Parliament. Huge economic difference.

not in toronto it isnt...because our lower middle class (which is by the way our ghetto) theyre still making and pulling in 30-35 g's a year which isnt that bad. not only that but toronto doesnt have a lower class region. toronto is not like the states where they pile all their "garbage" into one spot. man lok where i live in etobicoke..on one side of the street theres projects and when u cross the street theres 700 thousand dollar homes..

how the fuck u gonna tell me that crime is not directly related to economics..u go to detroit and walk down the ghetto at night and then walk down the upper class suburbs..see how many times u get stabbed and in which area..

Posted by Vivid Boy on Aug-26-2004 02:25:

people dont commit crimes for sport..most of the time they commit them out of desperation...and kids see this and follow in its footsteps until theyre older have more responsibility and then start doing it out of desperation as well

I agree with that to some extent, but whites eventually all move to the suburbs to escape. Just look at the growth of Woodbridge.

it's related to race more than it's related to economics

my grandparents and their peers came to this country with NOTHING and worked their asses off

certain other groups commit way more crimes than others....

and instead of pretending that's not the case, we need to help them find solutions

woodbridge is no longer filled with rich white people anymore..just to let u know. but i agree most do move out to the suburbs...but i only have one question considering how expensive it is to live in the city,i mean my house a lil pieceof shit two storey which woulndt be worth spit anywhere else but is worth 350 thou over here, how can these new immigrants afford to live in the city with such inflated prices?

thats soime racist shit..u should watch american history X...listen to me when our parents came here and our grandparents..toronto was very very very very very different..and i mean very different...ill show u how different its a lil off topic but it shows u just how different things were...my friends dad is a doctor..he joined med school right after highschool..his average was a B- when he came out of hs...he got accepted with no problems...he now is fuckin loaded...took him 5 years to learn the prtactice..and hes laughin..can u do that now? nope..u have to do 4 years of university before u can even apply to med school and u need one of the highest GPA's to even get accepted...i know this is off topic..but it goes too show u how different things were..times change man..times have changed drasticaly since our parents first came here...

anyways my point being the people coming to this country are no longer european whites..and times have changed and its not easy to get a higher middle class paying jo anymore..hell these suckers comin out of years and years of uni are gonna find that out..trust me u cant blame race..it has nothing to do with race..nothing at all

if ur parents came here nowadays from europe with no education (most of the people coming here have 0 education cause theyre mostly coming from 3rd world countries now) trust me theyd be committing crimes too...

but we're getting confused here...like i said from the beginning this isnt the case in toronto..cause we dont have a large a crime rate..theres not alot of crime and there is not alot of poverty

I did watch that movie... and in the end, the black guys kills the white kid.

http://www.cbc.ca/witness/silence/crime.html

Chief Fantino understands the connection... but the NDP-types won't let him do his job

I do agree that times have changed. In the past, one income was enough for a family, and now people can'r get by with two income earners in their family.

once again our crime rate is not that high..and no matter hwere u in north america there is black on black violence..u know why? because of drugs..our government invest money in getting these dealers off the streets but its the same government investing money into cocaine trafficking. why because its the best selling product in North America...ahh our drug epidemic..what an irony what a paradox..but the reason its tagrted at blacks is because at one point when this shit was first introduced they had no human rights..or very limited human rights..having them kill eachother over this shit was no big deal..but now its a fuckin problem isnt it...but i also blame hip hop culture for glorifying this...u know if some of these idiot rappers made some new marketing schemes drugs bling bling and wepons wouldnt be glorified all thta much
and one more question whos smuggling the guns into this country when i cant even get a water pistol over the border?

Toronto's problems:

Transit - Transportation system - two words - IT SUCKS... we covered this not too long ago

NIMBYism- Not in My backyard - Little old ladies with nothing to do hold way too much complaint power in our supposed world class city. Just look at the island residents for an extreme example of what goes on all over the city.

Taxes - city hall's arrogance says that businesses will always want the prestige of being downtown so they will pay much higher taxes. Well tell that to the good folks at IBM, Magna, Kraft, etc etc who have all moved their offices to places like Markham and Vaughan. No corperate taxes = rise in household taxes = people moving the fuck out so they can afford to live.

Political Correct Mayhem- lets solve the homeless crisis by helping the homeless instead of wasting money on politically correct bullshit schemes. Lets face it, most people on the streets are there because they have mental problems or are runaways. Maybe its time to bring these people in and give them the help the need intead of respecting their "right" to become a human popsicle on a cold jan night.

Entertainment - look at what the city does to entertainment facilities. Basically our liquor laws are antiquated not to mention the PC crowd wont let a casino anywhere near Toronto. Let's make Toronto the tourist centre it once was. Stupid slogans and dumb tv ads wont solve our problems.

The pickle factor - is it just me or are people grumpier and ruder than ever? Not to mention how cold and unhelpful they are. I think people need to dislodge what's up their ass and start socializing again if we want to have the type of city thats worth talking about.

Crime is not a race thing, that is the silliest thing I've ever heard, if you think most crimes are committed by blacks, or asisans, spanish, italians, your all wrong, cause there are everyday crimes, and then large mountain crimes like corporate fraud, money laundering, that are never done by blacks. These are crimes that you should really care about cause they effect the economy and a bigger part of society than just the guy who robs the local convience store.

Plus what does a WOP have to say about racial crime, like organized crime never exsisted or something? if anything blacks are trying to be mafioso like the true master criminals of this world.

Either way, crime is not racially motivated. Sorry, but no one is genetically pre-disposed to be more violent and lawless, thats not how human beings work. Every race has their bad apples and while areas that show a steady incline of immigrants who live in poverty, thats just where you are going to find the crime, people who have less, always want more and find their own means to do it.

Jay I honestly think you are putting WAY too much emotion and effort into this...i don't think that it's healthy - you gotta live a less stressful and aggitated life

Somewhere along the way the Politically correct paradigm of thinking caught up with the real world and we are now reaping the rewards.

I dunno about that, maybe even longer than just 10 years, cause some cities in the states have more homocides in it than all of Canada does all year round. Some scary ass places in the states.

jayx most of the things you named here are good, except the casino in the city.

never ever it was a good idea to put one inside a city, its been studied over and over, and it always harmed the city (any city).

I've never been to monte carlo but I hear it's quite nice

Posted by DigiNut on Aug-26-2004 04:30:

What is this trash I'm hearing about Toronto only having a middle class? This is twisted semantics at best, although I'd prefer to call it completely retarded. Forest Hill is upper class. Jane/Finch is lower class. The only way you can lump these into the middle class category is if you take the word "middle" to mean 3,999,998 people in Toronto, the other 2 being the very richest and very poorest individuals in the city.

The inability to break out of the middle class is a direct consequence of taxes here and it happens all across Canada. Personal and corporate income tax, property tax, tobacco tax, alcohol tax, CPP, EI, gas tax, environmental tax, airport taxes, air conditioning taxes, customs, liquor taxes, capital gains tax, license tax, and probably a hundred other taxes that I just can't think of right now. And that's not even including the "unofficial" taxes like red light cameras and photo radar and parking tickets.

Government spending here is over 40% of our GDP and that's just the federal government. The reason for middle class never reaching upper class has got nothing to do with business or immigration or jobs or any other economic factors, it's purely government. And it's VERY easy to slip from middle class into lower class, all you have to do is not budget your money properly for a few years and find yourself having to declare bankruptcy.

All of this may not affect the amount of crime on ghetto streets but it sure does affect the amount of white-collar crime here. And the people who are committing crimes are finding legal ways to screw other people because they need to recoup their own losses. It's no wonder why nobody trusts each other here anymore, and the atmosphere of distrust is a breeding ground for all other types of crime, whether it's directly responsible for them or not.

It's a vicious circle and not one that this city is going to pull itself out of any time soon. The city can only do so much - many if not most problems are not Toronto's direct responsibility, they are the responsibility of the provincial and federal governments.

Posted by Jayx1 on Aug-26-2004 11:18:

You should see how much the government inhibits the growth of business. I never realized how business unfriendly the government is until i got into one of my own. The taxes are stifling and the city imposes all kinds of pathetic restrictions. We definately do not live in a free market.

On a side note: it was interesting hearing from my buddy in BC how the hells angles now control the shipyards in Victoria and Vancouver and how the RCMP no longer handle security there.

People need to wake up and smell the fact that we are becoming a hidden version of the 3rd world.

It's funny how most of the time, the accusers of racism turn out to be worse than the accused.

lots of social drama is happening everyday going from bankrupties to suicides (organized crime too) but you as an outsider don't hear about it. You just see the nice casino and voila.

Posted by Jayx1 on Aug-26-2004 13:32:

you dont hear about a lot of things from a lot of sources. Im one to believe that if these gambling addicts didnt get their fix at the casino, theyd be the first one in the back room at "vinnies pub" gambling with the don.

We can learn from places like Holland that stopped pretending that social ills existed and dealt with them in the open. I think this sort of harm reduction is mutually beneficial. Prohibition (of anything) clearly has never worked.

Posted by malek on Aug-26-2004 14:07:

getting access to Vinies may be easy for those in the know, but when you open a casino 24/7, its easier for joe shmoe to get addicted.

I am not against casinos, I am against them being implanted near metropolitan areas. So going to the casino doesn't become a daily routine.

Posted by Jayx1 on Aug-26-2004 14:44:

meh...

Gambling can become a routine by inviting a few friends over 4 nights a week for poker.

Prohibition never works. I wish we'd learn and move on to better solutions.
