It never ceases to amaze me how often that silly argument comes up.

The only time it pisses me off is when people go out of their way solely to write hate on other artists/types of music.


Eg, if I had a conversation with someone about trance and they said they thought it sucked because it was too formulaic/simple or whatever, I'd shrug it off or just casually counter them... wouldn't be too bothered.

If I was talking on a forum with someone else who liked trance though, and someone completely uninvolved butted in and started bashing trance using the reasons above... then yes I'd be pissed off. If you don't like it and have nothing constructive to say then stay the fuck out.

Prime example on this board: Tiesto. I like him as an artist/DJ, and couldn't really care if others don't... but in just about every tiesto-related thread that gets posted, some jackass comes in completely unprovoked and slags him & his listeners off. That annoys me... not just because my opinion is different to theirs, but because they're forcing it, unprovoked, where its not wanted. Being assholes basically.

Perhaps... in a flawed way, he's trying to say you shouldn't say something's crap because you don't like it. Example: I don't like indie rock. But I don't say "indie is crap", because that isn't true, I just don't like it. There is some music I say "it's crap", for example Welsh rock-group Lost Prophets, because they can't write a bloody tune. But to instantly call something bad because you don't like it... "can you produce something better?" makes sense.

I'll get a little offended, but it usually doesn't matter; it's their own opinion, so they're entitled to it.

What will bug me, though, is when people start insulting other artists with incorrect facts. That's the point in the argument where I'll jump in and correct them.

Sure there is. Opinions are wrong all the time. It is a moral obligation of humans to dispute and refute the worthiness of their opinions. If you can't hold yours up and defend it with empirical evidence, it fails as a quality meme.

Look at politics. Nothing would get done in the annals of government legislation if everyone had the defeatist attitude you do....unwilling to stand up for your convictions and unwilling (or perhaps incapable) of challenging others. yeah, the "can't criticise because haven't done anything better" is a stupid argument, but people sometime cross the line on the opposite way. they fail to realise that while the end result is shit to your ears, the producers may have worked their ass off to do it. doesn't mean you can't say what you think about the music you dislike, but at least respect the artists a bit. unless they are greedy bastards that don't deserve respect

Hah! An intellectual pacifist? You so obviously don't know me. What you ignore here is what I consider reasonable- if I don't consider an argument reasonable I debate it, which I do frequently. I once made a long post on your forum arguing with you, but the bloody board wouldn't verify my user-name so I lost the whole post.

Ish, you're just looking for an argument.

i dont get offended at all, im just liek watever. but if someone tells me "trance sucks, hip hop rules" then i get really
