just wondering, how do you find out if something is rare or not

Posted by Eric Siefer on Oct-24-2004 19:56:

lol I'm with Moondog.

I guess I need to start hanging out with more DJ's.

A few I think are rare, (well for me they were hard to find)

1. The Prodigy - Everybody in the Place (gotta love the piano solo on G-force(energy flow))
2. Tomcraft - Overdose

If they are 78s and don't feel like normal vinyl, they are not. It is what all records were made of back then but it is much more fragile (I am not sure if it is acetate or not) and when the current vinyl material was available all records were made of it instead.

As for my rare record, I guess it would have to be Ariel - A9 remixes on white label which says their are only 2000 copies. It think the artist paid to have it pressed, that is why their are so few (and it is not a great tune).

I think there are tons and tons of tracks that only get pressed 2000 times or even less. Most of the times, tracks are pressed in that amount, and when they are (commercially) successful, more copies are being made. As you know, not all tracks are successful, meaning there are enough tracks only being pressed once, leaving about 2000 copies floating about.

At least, I thought it went that way most of the time. Of course, exceptions are made for tracks that are guaranteed to sell more copies (new Tiesto, Armin etc. tunes).

Didn't think that Jens - Psycho Strings was rare, but if you say so.

Let's put things into context with this thread though. It's fair to say that the majority of dance music becomes rare unless it goes to mass pressing on a major label.

If you try and get something at the time it's pressed you will find it's not rare, but try six months later and virtually everything is rare unless it's crap.

I have a copy of the first pressing of Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic force - Planet Rock on "21 Records" the label that issued it before it came out on Tommy Boy. I also have all of the Bambaataa releases on first print on the Tommy Boy label.
I have all of the World Class Wreckin' Cru's records including the first imports on Kru Kut Records. (For those that don't know that's Dr. Dre's first group back in the mid 80s.

I have tons of white labels and test pressings of a lot of dance music, including the white label of Snap - I got the power, which may not seem all that to a lot of you but is actually technically worth more than most records mentioned here (Although I may not be sure why myself).
I have the orignal pressing of Prodigy - Charly and a lot of other XL stuff.

Bizarre Inc - Playing with knives (Both versions).
T99 - Anastacia
Trilithon - Choice
Channel X - Rave the rythm
Liquid - Sweet Harmony
Winx - Don't laugh
West Street Mob - Break Dance Electric Boogie (Original Sugar Hill records 7" because there was no 12" the first time it came out.)
DJ Dick - Weekend
A guy called Gerald - Voodoo Ray
808 State - The one with the sax... memory fails me right now.
Moby - Go (On inner rythm promo).
Hashim - Alnaafysh the Soul (Original not one of the many reprints)
Un Salle Histoire - B Side (Source of the most famous scratching sounds ever "Arrrrggggghhhhh this cut is reaaaaalllly Frrrrresssh" you know the one I mean.
Tons of stuff on Perfecto
Goon Squad - Power Drill

Been collecting vinyl for a long time and still have a few thousand even though I have sold a fair bit.

Cheers
Nem
