Dont care about my hearing that much... If you've ever met my great aunt rose... u'll know why...

Posted by anth_on_e on Oct-18-2004 22:53:

My hearing has become an issue. I have had a ringing in my ears very very occasionally where whenever someone talks it becomes a screech in my ears. I was thinking about getting it checked and maybe eventually getting custom ear plugs just because my ears are worth more than 150 bucks to me. Just out of curiousity anyone know exactly what tinnitus is?

http://www.ata.org/

Tinnitus is the medical term for the perception of sound in one or both ears or in the head when no external sound is present. It is often referred to as "ringing in the ears," although some people hear hissing, roaring, whistling, chirping, or clicking. Tinnitus can be intermittent or constant-with single or multiple tones-and its perceived volume can range from subtle to shattering.

do you know what the term is for when u hear something but its a screech? lol

Posted by DigiNut on Oct-18-2004 23:02:

I'm pretty concerned, but Viva and Guv are really the only places where my ears ring or hurt (sometimes System, not often though). I'm not all that sensitive to high frequencies, but I am VERY sensitive to distortion and discord... so as long as the system is clear, I don't have trouble.

Maybe I'm still wrecking my hearing though, who knows... I always hear faraway sounds that nobody else hears (no I don't suffer from auditory hallucinations), so I think my hearing is fine, but word comprehension kinda sucks sometimes... weird.

Wha? Huh? Hey did you just hear that? Sounded like a car horn and some children singing...

Yeah.. There it is again...

Posted by LittlePoonzgirl on Oct-19-2004 01:12:

I used to need my hearing a lot more than I do now. However, I do plan on going back to flying so I have to take it easy. Forking out some cash for good earplugs is worth it to me as long as it doesn't distort the sound too much (guess I should look into that). I had a hearing test a few years ago and everything was perfect then...hope I didn't do too much damage since. That guv 8year was not kind to my ears. I don't know how some of you can put up with that and not worry.

Posted by DJ_Elyot on Oct-19-2004 04:19:

Don't you guys think that if Guv noticed so many people wearing earplugs, they'd turn the music down a little? I mean... don't they have some kinda moral responsibility to their patrons? Even if they're not gonna get sued, why would turning down the volume a little hurt? Has anyone ever decided NOT to go to a club because THE SPEAKERS ARE TOO QUIET?

Maybe they have to keep the music loud to cater to the patrons who have already lost 80% of their hearing... if they turned it down, half the crowd wouldn't hear anything.

Posted by The Highroller on Oct-19-2004 04:30:

Yea I think I'm going to start wearing ear plugs to most of the events I go to now. I've been bad about it.

Posted by j_spot on Oct-19-2004 04:36:

I know ive got damage because: for no apparent reason (mid day, conversation, lecture etc) I get what I would call static bursts in my ear. Its like white noise, I cant hear anything, it sounds like static coming from inside my ear.

ya..so Im ALWAYS wearing my earplugs @ the club. Just regular etymotics, but I wanna keep some semblance of hearing for at least another 25 years.

Read This!

I get earplugs at work and there are several kinds to choose from as well.I wear ear protection at work AND when I go to a club. There's NO WAY I could bear the volumes blasting in places like the Guv or Koolhaus or Viva.I had my hearing checked at work last year and my hearing was ok (thank God ).I just can't bear living in total silence when I get older & not being able to listen to music because of some bad choices from early on in my life.If I had a choice between blindness & defness then I would choose blindness.I think I would actually go mad if I lost ALL of my hearing.

I was wondering Jayx1 if you had your hearing checked just to see if you did sustain any damage from DJing

Rob

Hearing you LOUD & CLEAR

Posted by RandomGirl on Oct-19-2004 09:36:

I KNOW I have done damage to my hearing. I often get ringing, sometimes I can't hear at all for a couple seconds, I have a hard time hearing people talk at times, I always have to turn the TV up to hear it properly.

I should get my hearing tested.

I think it is largely due to the fact that I am always listening to music with headphones, VERY LOUDLY! And never mind the clubs where I dance RIGHT BESIDE the speakers. Yea, probably a dumb move.

It isn't severely bad right now, but sometimes it gets frusterating when I ask people to repeat themselves several times.

Oh well, I wont worry about it right now, but I am turning my headphones down...

My ears are fucked -- I can even tell that I've now got one ear hearing better (or worse) than the other (monitoring ear is weaker). Yes I'm worried. My hearing has noticeably deteriorated over even just the last year or so, let alone whatever damage was done beforehand while walking past some of the big-ass stacks at the old BLC parties for example. Ack! Those hurt!

If anyone has a link to someplace that sells custom pro earplugs, please let me know (or perhaps I should see my local audiologist?). I've tried tons of conventional earplugs and hate them all. Hmmm... Cost is not too much of an issue. I work in a loud environment (heavy machinery constantly running @ high RPM), so my benefit plan will likely cover them...

Agreed. You can be standing right in front of the stacks there, with that system cranked, and there's absolutely no pain -- it's just so LUSH! Proof that it really is all about the 'bad sound'/interference/distortion that our engineer types are talking about.

Union Hearing Aid Centre Ltd.
Suite 710 - 123 Edward Street
Toronto, ON
M5G 1E2

P: 416-364-2264
F: 416-348-0780

They have an audiologist that is there 3 days a week or so to do tests - tests cost ~$30. I had the audiologist write a script for the attenuators and then just submitted a claim to my work insurance - viola it was paid.

Excellent! Thanks RJ! I think i'll check em out tomorrow. My work insurance should cover this as well -- and of not, well... you can't really be a trance addict if you can't hear the trance, so this would be a good investment.

For now I use the el-cheapo Shoppers Drug Mart ear plugs. Unfortunately the cheap ones tend to block out quite a bit of the frequency band. I think someone was telling me that they make earplugs based on hearing aids that reproduce all the frequencies, just at a lower decibel level.

Do you have to have a particular reason for submitting earplugs under insurance?

Posted by ShadoWolf on Apr-25-2005 03:11:

best price/comfort/performance IMO:

I'm with Sun Life. AFAIK its either Hearing Aids or Medical Supplies and Equipment. While you're looking through your coverage, you might want to check out custom orthotics too -- good if you do a lot of walking.

RJ can prolly tell ya when he claimed his under.

If your insurance won't cover earplugs specifically, most plans have a health spending account you can use for health claims that are not covered.

The last time i forgot my ear plugs i had to leave the Guv cuz i was going to puke it was soooo loud.
