You are very well read. I'll have to check this book out again.

nowadays he has lost the plot in a totally different way. Any dj who claims that things like 'right of way' and 'its time' are 'electro' needs shooting hes a joke now, probably more than he used to be.

I agree.

Yea. What is the idea or concept behind this? What is the sound or the DJ that best represents Vandit nights? You have shown to have a good taste and understanding for music so who would you pick to headline?

i dont think there is a particular idea or concept apart from this - its a night put on by Paul van Dyk and the guests are picked by him - therefore you would expect him to actually respect or like the people he books...

he likes Sasha, Nick Warren, Sander Kleinenberg, Ashley Casselle, Moguai, Jerry Bonham, Timo Maas etc etc

he does not like Tiesto & Ferry Corsten... yet he will book them for LFA & Vandit night, and there is only one reason why.

In 2002 there was a LFA which did not include tiesto, and it was pretty empty. In 2003 tiesto played and it sold out, in 2004 tiesto played, and it sold out... and so it will go on.

its pretty sad to see that PvD who used to be known for his sharp tongue & bitchy comments & pretty much unfounded hatred for 99% of other djs is now doing stuff like this - especially when he bangs on about 'honesty' in his music all the time.

Posted by Dave Piazza on Nov-18-2004 00:44:

Just for kicks.

Are these actions by PVD examples of a DJ 'selling out'?

What were your thoughts on Paul Van Dyk's work on the Zurdo soundtrack. Recycled trance or production wizard?

Posted by UWM on Nov-18-2004 00:47:

Zurdo?

too many ppl are being overly critical of popular djs, in general on this board

u guys can go complain and be all negative while all those other ppl have a great time

'popular techno djs' are not guaranteed to sell out a night in berlin really... Not unless its a full lineup like that. & having PvD on means it will not be.

It's a lot safer than booking Ferry Corsten, that's for sure. Looking at what most german clubbers like proves that.

again you doubt what i know is true, so im not sure where youre going with it.

The fact that Paul has supported Ferry Corsten by playing his tunes numerous times throws your "truth" into question. Paul's view of him just might have improved over the years.

If you are right as you claim however, it shows that Paul is a genuine sellout who gladly compromises on his tastes as long as it keeps the cashflow up.

I just put 'Zurdo' because he put 'Zordo' in his original post

How? Why?

That Paul has played his tunes as much as he has supports that theory. How and why it has happened is really irrelevant to the debate at hand.

Which tune[s] did he play? When?

Posted by UWM on Nov-18-2004 17:33:

Ferry Corsten - It's Time (Kai Tracid)
Ferry Corsten - Punk

etc ...

Posted by Dave Piazza on Nov-18-2004 17:34:

Your argument is as followed ( please correct me if I'm wrong)

Paul Van Dyk played Ferry Corsten tracks. This indicates he respects him as an artist. Because Vandit Nights is an event to showcase DJ's Paul Van Dyk respects Ferry would be a rationale choice.

Ferry Corsten - It's Time (Flashover Mix/Kai Tracid Mix) (Soundgarden and Love From Above)

Funk Einsatz - Punk (Rosenmontagsrave 2002)

Corderoy - Sweetest Dreams (Ferry Corsten Remix) (GBDJ + Vandit Night in Feb)

Roger Goode - In The Beginning (Ferry Corsten Remix) (Rosenmontagsrave 2002)

Thrillseekers - Synaesthesia (Ferry Corsten Mix) (Soundgarden)

Ferry Corsten - Indigo (Mayday 2003)

Want me to go on?

Posted by jp on Nov-18-2004 17:38:

I'll skip this one and go to Innercity. The place is too small, I'll wait until Februari (hopefully Columbiahalle)

BTW

I am trying to understand both sides of the argument. Right now I am just trying to understand your perspective.

Yes, I understand. It might well be that Paul is just booking Ferry in order to make as much cash as possible, but the factors I have brought into the debate via my posts puts that argument into question.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if it was true. Paul has flip floped numerous times tastewise compared to his earlier statements. For instance, he stated in interview that he didn't like the new mixes of Synaesthesia since they didn't do anything new with the original track. Yet he goes on to play Ferry's mix on Soundgarden regardless.

Posted by dj tek on Nov-18-2004 17:52:

its simple, if paul DO NOT respect ferry as an artist like Laushina was saying BUT plays ferry's shit like crazy even makes HIS own re-edit of a ferry remix[sweetest dreams], straight up thats contradicking himself in the ass... and ALSO, pvd shits on many tracks that are 'cheese' soemehow he thinks the cheese HE plays is ok. no its not ok, he plays plenty of crap as well. so what is HE do claim whats cheese and whats not, oh dont forget, he used to play Gouryella - Gouryella as well..

I personally think the schizophrenic nature of PVD is his largest asset. One can never classify him as a particular style or sound of DJ. Unlike so many DJs that embrace one particular sound PVD is very skillful in his ablity to embrace many different sounds. IMO that is what makes him a true DJ. As a result Paul Van Dyk is able to appeal to a diverse crowd of listeners without resorting to hype or gimmicks. This is what makes him the musical genius.

The paradox ( if one exist) is found in the purpose of Vandit Nights and the booking of Ferry Corsten. To understand this paradox you have to ask yourself the following questions:

What were the characteristics or musical philosophy of other DJs prior to the Ferry booking for Vandit Nights?

How are they different from Ferry?

If Vandit nights is believed to be an event that Paul Van Dyk shapes to showcase his idea of dance music; than one must analyze the Ferry booking through this perspective. Thus the following questions must be asked:

How does Ferry Corsten fit into the musical philosophy of Paul Van Dyk ?

Is this booking congruent with the musical direction of Vandit nights and Paul Van Dyk?

Is Paul Van Dyk selling out on his musical integrity in the aspiration for quick profits and guaranteed success via Ferry Corsten??

I dont claim to have all the answers but I do know what questions to ask.

Hopefully someone can solve this puzzle.

He didn't play it on Soundgarden, Ferry did. He had a guest slot yesterday.

Posted by ShellSh0ck on Nov-18-2004 18:45:

Vandit wants to come up with something new, paul recognized that Ferry has improved a lot and he liked his recent Remixes or Tunes so he played them. Furthermore you dont have quick profits and guaranteed success when you book Ferry for a Vandit Night because he's never been here before. The Berlin Crowd is very openminded towards new Guests...so there wont be any problem.
Moreover PvD hasn't dissed Ferry since ages...

hehe, i would definitely go see that if I could!

As for this whole argument, I honestly would not want to see Ferry and Paul together. Separately yes, but not together. They both have different styles to their sets and I like 'em both, just not on the same night...
