the average hip hop lover that turns to some kind of EDM (even though hip hop is a type of breakbeat, so its EDM too) turns to house.. play house, they'd prolly like that more than trance

deffantly go with Breaks... iv done this before myself and they stoped bitching about the Trance once i started throwin on some heavy Breaks they work...

but if you were in NC man id let you use my Breaks collection have plenty of remixes of 80's songs as well as Usher and Jay-Z and even Lil' John... so thats something i use to get the crowed used to this new style...

the way to go is remixes man...

Try freestyle music. It kinda sounds like rap, but at the same time you can dance to it.

Trance to non-trance audience?

My advice is RUN YOUR FUCKING ASS OFF! Turn the fucking gig down! Why would you play music you don't like? Besides, I think it would be a waste of money to buy Hip-Hop records you don't like, since I understand that you use turntables.

Do you want to keep doing gigs that you don't really want to do?

At my Homecoming this year, the DJ played mostly rap shit, but threw in 2 trance tracks which all the kids surprisingly liked...which were:
Darude - Sandstorm
Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone

Play those 2, the kids will recognize them and they're just good to dance to. Also, if you wanna go for something else that they'll recognize but without cheesy euro vocals, go for:
Fragma - Toca Me

Toca's Miracle would annoy some people, but if you play Toca Me, they'll recognize the melody and enjoy it. It's a pretty chill track too.

And if you can, play some trance with deep lyrics. A lot of the punk/emo kids would like it much more if the lyrics related to what they usually listen to. Tracks like:
Jan Johnston - Flesh
Sunscreem vs Push - Please Save Me
Matt Darrey & Marcella Woods - Liberation

There are quite a few people at this school who listen to EDM apparently. The majority still have an affinity for hip-hop. Here's the "census" [not sure that's the right word] of the population:

Jocks & preppy people- about 25% that listen to classic rock and stuff like that [don't worry about them, even if the other DJ played hip-hop they'd hate it although if anyone has any last minute suggestions as to how to deal with them then please post them before 5 pm Eastern Standard Time on Saturday the 11th]
Most others- probably a bit less than 60% that listen to hip-hop
Goths Metalheads- probably less than 5%
EDM compatible people- approximately 10%

Keep in mind this school is pretty big. Thanks for the advice everyone.

For those prepy kids you could always drop something like Warp brothers - smells like teen spirit, and you could wear one of those yellow jackets with a big red R or S or whatever letter one always see in movies that they wear.

Why would anyone (If you don't have these in your collection from like years ago) go and buy something like Darude sandstorm, fragma - toca me , alice dj and atb 9pm. That to me is the same as wasting money on hip hop records.

I was in the same situation as you were at the first university party I DJed. So many dickheads came up to me; �do you have any DMX? Can u play some 50cent? Do u have any Mediterranean music? � like wtf. Some guy wanted to pick a fight with me over the music I was playing cus I refused to play any hip-hop.
By the end of it I just didn�t give a fuck and played how I would usually. Luckily a power shortage saved me and the party was over�
If you want to have any chance of passing off EDM at a uni party, I would go with mostly house as they can still grind to it so it won�t be out of their comfort zone. OR alternatively grind up some pills and mix them into the keg...

See if you can find any doors remixes.. One track that comes to mind is The Light - Opium for the masses (or it might be called distant place) <-- it has a sample of the doors in it. A buddy of mine (who is also a TA -- Jethro) spun another doors track yesterday. Also, might want to try the Bob Marley - Sun is shining remixes.

Okay. In Vancouver (I live near Sacramento, California), how is the scene for other underground electronic genres? D 'n b, Hardcore, trip-hop, whatever.

There are many, many events in the Bay Area around here that are sort of "combination" gigs. D 'n b, trance, house, hip hop, rock, etc, all in one night. Well, occasionally one of those genres ends up at the promoter's forefront. He wants to bring in, let's just say, drum 'n bass. And he has a STACKED d 'n b lineup, with some great local names. He also has a decent line up of hip-hop to go before them.

And then he wants a "house" DJ. Between a ROCK BAND and the HIP HOP SEGMENT. And he's trying to bring in a more underground crowd, so he isn't looking for Sandstorm. So I get the gig when I meet the guy for the first time. He has never heard me play, but I come "recommended" from a couple people he knows.

I discover very quickly that his idea of "house" ranges from Richard Humptey Vission to Yoji Biomehanika. He just sort of expects the "house DJ" to know what the crowd wants.

Well, I'm not an idiot. In-between a rock band and hip hop? Leading up to drum 'n bass? My function is to keep the soup hot before the OTHER GUYS get to serve it.

Translation: Keep people from walking away at the door. Probably the last thing a die-hard d 'n b/hip hop fan wants to hear as they're purchasing their ticket at the door is "BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM AS THE RUSH COMES AS THE RUUUUUSH COMES *SUPERSAW*."

So I'm 90 minutes of filler in front of a polyrhythmic crowd. It won't help me or my reputation to clear a dancefloor because I just HAVE to drop "Beautiful Things."

So I let the promoter know: I'm playing breaks. It's mellow, polyrhythmic, and most importantly, stable. People don't kick in speakers because of breaks. And the plus side, I can easily dive into prog house/trance, or even some epic and melodic trance. The promoter agreed, and agreed with my reasoning. In fact, he's glad that I have an opinion on how to make his night better.

Now, I could have treated the gig as an insult to my artistic style. I mean, asking me to play house in front of a d 'n b crowd? What the fuck is the point of that, right? It's crimping my style.

That is, if I defined my DJing style by the records I play. I don't. I define my style with HOW I PLAY THEM. Plain and simple. And I like many kinds of music. Why shouldn't I mix them all? So far, the only boundary is money (I can't afford every genre's records). You seem to be suggesting that it's "fucking stupid" to be able to play multiple genres. (I guess James Zabiela is "fucking stupid" for learning turntablism on a hip-hop slant. His style is SOOO compromised...)

Because it's such a bad thing to be able to stand in front of ANY crowd, ANYWHERE, and FUCK SHIT UP. Because it's such bad experience to play monthly hip-hop gigs, and weekly drum 'n bass gigs. There's no skills that can be applied to trance. Nope.

Tell it to Z-Trip, St. John, DJ Craze, or any number of skilled DJs who can blow the roof off of a disco, 80's, or 90's rap crowd.

Note: I'm not suggesting that people who don't play multiple genres at will are bad DJs. You're suggesting that people who DO, ARE.

dnb has a vast range in style though. but i agree very much with this statement. people turn up to events cuz they like the headliners on the flyer. i mean, you could probably get away with hybrid's symphony or hybrid's mix of expander, float it into some chilled drum and bass and theres 90% of time always someone who could go on afterwards who will gladly plunge the dnb into filth and rudeness for a middle of the night grime-a-thon. but i suppose it depends on what everyone else is playing and where you see it leading.


ive seen some crowds clear the dancefloor when theres a very sudden change in the tone and tempo of the music for any length of time. we could really have used someone keeping the soup hot on those occassions. eheh

The Rundown on what happened

So heres what happened:

DAMN! Rap is slow as hell! I couldn't find a song slow enough! That freshman wouldn't play anything faster to speed it up for me.
But since I couldn't really do anything about it, I just went right into my stuff. When I got to the site they told me there was no room for my turntables. So I had to get out my CD collection-which is considerably worse than my vinyl collection.

Anyway, heres the tracklist- I didn't really know what to do but I guess people were OK with what I did except for a few songs. All the songs were cut into 2-5 minute segments with no breakdowns [I had to use 2 copies of the same song on 2 CDs to skip breakdowns]. I can't mix worth a damn on a CD box so it was kinda like "blind mixing" [if thats the correct terminology.

1. Darude- Sandstorm [Played it from the second fill]
2. Paul Oakenfold- Dream of Trance
3. Voodoo and Serano- Blood is Pumping [Some people complained that it was too repetitive]
4. Ferry Corsten- Rock Your Body Rock [Got some thumbs up so I played the whole thing]
5. Rammstein- Du Hast [Techno remix] [Didn't know so many people liked this song]
6. Earthbound- One Nation Trance Nation [played the breakdown]
7. Earthbound- Element of Love [Heartbeating mix] [This is so fast]
8. Ayla- Liebe [Trance Mix]
9. Hemstock & Jennings- Reverence [Darren Tate Remix] [This song has like this weird voice in it that kinda freaked some people out]
10. Aven- All I Want [Ferry Corsten Remix] [The ladies like vocal trance, too bad I played it last]

And then I left the freshie to figure out how he was going to make it slow again. So from this I think playing repetitive stuff is alright but don't keep it up for more than 2 minutes [especially Blood is pumpin, that song goes on forever]. Vocal trance works on the ladies. If you can get them on the dance floor then the guys follow. If you don't have the Du Hast remix I suggest getting it b/c it works mad well even though its not trance. Trance and Rap are mostly incompatible. Play one or the other. If you can't do that, play the trance first and it will make the rap seem slow [yeah I know some machines 'cheat' and have tempo increase].

good job emperor. it was interesting to see the feedback that u got from the crowd. seems like you didn't have to overdo the cheese to get a somewhat positive crowd reaction

HAHAHA i can just imagine that.. I played Wolfsheim-Wundervoll(blank and jones rmx) once with taht german voice at a university party and people got really freaked out.

hey at least you went out on a high! instill in all of them this idea of not being completely satisfied by giving them a taster then stopping it prematurely - keep em coming back for more. mwahaha!
