I used to be in a punk band and got out of it cause I realized how lame it has gotten.

I sort of agree with a small part of what you said. Yes "punk" bands that are in the eye of the public, sum 41, blink 182, green day, are pretty much shite. But you must dig deeper! There are still plenty of great punk bands around and some new ones coming about. Thats like someone saying EDM is shit because i just picked up the latest copy of trance party volume 43 off the tele. I always thought that gauging music by how "hard" it is was only for guitar shredding metal heads? I guess the true skill lies in being able to take a group of kids that can barely play their instruments(sometimes) and barely sing(sometimes) and turning it into something one can appreciate for not trying to be something its not.

If you were in a punk band before im sure you know these but check out bad religion, swingin utters, streetlight manifesto, rancid. If you can write a song even approaching their caliber and send it my way i will sign over my car title to you and you can even keep the rights to the song! Anyway, these "punk" bands may slightly rip the style of "real" punk bands by writing fast and usually simple songs, but its instantly obvious they arent punk bands, the spirit simply isnt there. Sorry for the ramble, you hit a sensitive spot because as you implied punk rock is getting quite a shitty reputation due to MTV.

Therefore the "trancy feeling" should be even easier to make if the music itself is so easy to produce, especialy with so much crap out there.

My question is where are these people who don't listen to trance anymore you speak of? You mentioned them in the title and through the entire thing all I heard about was about people who don't listen to it to begin with.

I listen to trance and I don't really care about those who don't.

Their loss (so I perceive), and my gain.

I'm sick of people who assume that Trance fans are uneducated or new to EDM -- I have friends who fall into this group and it bothers me.

I love Trance/Techno/House - who cares about the posers who have 'progressed' to other genres. Good for them, enjoy whatever music you prefer - but - don't knock others for their tastes - ESPECIALLY if they were your tastes a year prior.

Electronic music fans love to preach acceptance about their music - yet - there isn't enough acceptance of fans of within different EDM genres, how ironic.

Enough with the hate.

One of my favourites is people telling others that their tastes havn't evolved or that they just havn't heard anything other than trance. I find that people who branch off into heavy progressive and whatnot seam to be the most elitest type people.

I couldn't agree more.

Personally, I can appreciate most forms of music. I honestly don't give a damn what others might think about what I listen to and resent those who are of the attitude that everything that is not their favourite genre at the present time must be trash.

You're right Swamper. You're right.

Um, but usually they are uneducated and/or new to EDM. I'd guess 90% of people who will ever start listening to EDM begin with listening to trance (modern day McTrance/the cheesier kind, that is), the rest start out with some form of house (commercial funky house... you know, the MoS stuff).

Ever checked out the discogs.com forums, or even littledetroit.net? Those people know their stuff, I mean really, they know their shit. They have intelligent discussions, I can't say much of that goes on here. And guess what; they don't listen to trance. They've been around for a long time.

I expect some n00bs to reply with "you're a twat" when they don't understand what I'm saying. Sigh.

well its impossible to have intelligent discussion with "elitist whores" like yourself.

And yes you are a twat, but hey as you said in another thread, its only the internet.

Atleast I explain myself when I wanna get my point across. I don't go saying "Trance sucks", then give no reason for me believing that. Though maybe I should, since none of you seem to listen anyway.

Hi there!

I understand what you're saying. Trance is in the can, crap, pants, etc. these days. But I'll be there to the bitter end, because art has a way of renewing itself.

well put

i feel that if i listen to only one genre i get bored after a while, dosen't mean the genre is crap now....and even if trance has not evolved in some time, does that take away the feeling you got when you listened to the old stuff? Trance will never be dead it will just slow down untill someone comes along and uses it in a new way. I really hope that in 10-20 years i don't hear people calling the now new prog and such tracks 'cheese' (hate that term) and raving about how mature and sophisticated the new popular styles are. But that's how i suppose music has been forever

The problem with trance is everything has been done before, i mean like 5 years ago you heard some original killer tune and it was great for ages and ages,

Now you here a killer tune it stays with you for about what 10 mins lol nah a week or so and its boring

Trance is just going through a small phase where it has to revitalise itself to something new

Also another problem is people like Special C and Motorbike and people like that getting air play and stuff, here in the UK its hard to find a shop that sells Vinyl or CD for Trance, you only find Dj Samey and Blue Zone and crap like that

Hnn...

I've had a number of sabbaticals from the whole trance genre over the years but it wasn't really due to a growing distaste for it. Rather, when I start to hear similarily structured material dominate albums, compilations, and DJ mixes for a period of time, it gets boring fast. I had one such period of trance-rest when the early 90's sound was dying out, where I ended up checking out what else the EDM world had to offer (just in time for the 'electronica' boom! ). I had another around 2002, when the anthems were just getting redundent. Yet I keep coming back to the fold and have fun with a little catch-up. Whatever had initially piqued my interest in trance way back when I first heard Dance 2 Trance's We Came In Peace is still there -I just need a break from it every so often as well.

It may be a cliche but variety really is a most delicious spice.

well said, those f**** euro cheese losers, i hate them with a passion! trance will never die for me, find it in ur hearts to keep it alive!

Posted by Abhay on Feb-20-2005 08:07:

Firstly,

WHat the Fuck is an elitist?

Secondly,
Trance is a changing genre, what that means is, that it will change.

In any change there will be some against it and some for it.

Some ppl will always say, "oh, this new shit, is shit". THey will be the ones that may drop off, assuming, they never start liking it. YEt, there will be others who will love and embrace teh new style more-so. And so... we gain fans...

Trance is always dying, but as long as it grows at the same pace... it's OOOKKKK....

an example of this is when a DJ changes his style, for whatever reason. Look at Tiesto. No doubt he has a new style. What theat means for him, is that shitloads of Tiesto listeners for ages have started dropping off, and stopped listening to him. Yet, so many ppl love him more, and so many ppl have started appreciating trance becasue of him.

This is all clearly evident on TA.

Posted by Alexan on Feb-20-2005 08:10:

Yeah trance is shit! I'm gonna go listen to Linkin Park & Greenday!

Thanks for the laugh

He has gained so many fans because he is the #1 DJ in the world and these days teeny boppers will follow anything.

He is overrated to the max and had a lot less fans when he used to produce, remix and DJ something awesome. New style pfff if that's a new style I hope that no DJ heads down that path.

Who says a lot of people aren't listening to trance? Over the last 2 or so years the top 40 charts from around here have been populated by many trance DJs and still are. Many say trance was at it's peak before that time. Possibly in some other countries, but from where I am there wouldn't be a trance song caught dead on the charts.

One thing I notice when people discuss music is this. People ask each other,"what do you like to listen to? Then you get the...Green Days, Offspring, 50 Cent or whatever. When you get to the guy who likes trance, he/she says I like Trance. He doesn't say he likes Motorcycle, or Van Buuren or Van Dyk or tiesto.

Seems like trance to the general population, the non trance-addicts is a separate entity, like just another band. Which kinda sucks but u can only discuss those artists and their styles with other trance fans.
