Let's not forget that society in general decides what is offensive and obscene. In this case enough people spoke up and made their views known. Hot97 fired their morning crew as damage control for their sponsors without a doubt, but it is only because that imaginary line had been crossed. Remember kids we live in a country where people freaked out at a boob on television.

^^that verbatim above is completely pointless. he didn't clarify one thing nor did he offer any reasonable explanation. Konjin, I agree with you that slurs directed at ethnicity, gender, and sexuality are made every day in the media, but the line has to be drawn somewhere. When the right authorities catch wind of a controvesy like this and enough people are offended and voice their opinion, the people will get in trouble for it. Others don't get in trouble for their words because nobody takes them seriously, or their offense is not egregious enough to be noticed. It's true that this kind of stuff is everywhere, but we can at least start somewhere and punish people for the most egregious examples, like this one.
IN the US the rhetoric is always rights-based.. no one ever talks about responsibilities, this leads to a danger of society becoming ego-centric and insensitive, and leads to things like this song. Serrano is a great artist, but the statements he makes in his art are ambiguous (as most art is). Serrano himself is a Christian and there are countless non-offensive ways to interpret Piss Christ... which are probably closer to the artist's true intentions. When someone says "i'm gonna shoot me some n*****s" they have overstepped the mark. There is no unoffensive interpretation. It is sheer senseless hate against a particular race.
The concept of justice isn't just about rights, it's also about community standards, and if a statement is so outrageously offensive and disrespectful that it causes a huge outcry from the community, then there have to be repercussions and the people responsible have to face the music.
