or maybe seeing JulesSLeeze up in lasers, then looking up to the console and seeing m, ben and co pissing themselves.
or maybe the first 5am, PLaying open with Adam Holden, falling in love with PLaying out, and pretty much falling in love with adam
okay im coming. |
let's not forget the time that the headphone jack broke and Julian Reynolds had to play vs sample gee by ear

Easy now big G
I would like to think that every 5am dj (or other self respecting dj) has the musical resources and critical faculties to cater for any timeslot which the are called upon to play, and that they would play music appropriate for it. Personally, I find it probably THE most challenging thing to pick tunes to start the night with, which ease people into the trance sound building energy with a steady progression, and showing appropriate restraint before handing over with the room rockin. It really hurts my head to do it, but benefits my dj'ing alot more that sliding in exactly at my preferred tempo/style slot.
You object to hearing 141 anthems at 10pm quite rightly because you want to be gently introduced to the theme sound of the night, not bludgeoned with it, and punters possibly even without realising it need that too.
I do agree that some dj's are better equipped to play earlier slots given the style they most prefer playing, but maybe in that case, those less equipped should be given the challenge? dunno - just throwing some thoughts around.
When you think on a Global basis (which I would hope we all are) 5am dj's are quite little fish in a big pond, and adaptability is and important (imperative?) attribute.
I'd like this idea to be discussed - I'm really interested... or maybe it's for another thread?!?

on the first issue, i'm not doubting anyone's ability in whichever timeslots, i just think that it's time that scotty be given the chance to play at main slot. to be honest, putting him in the opening slot AGAIN after almost a year with 5am is fucking ridiculous, imo.
i mean seriously man, i don't mind having pana on the main slot, but don't you think that it's only fair that everyone was given a go at mainslot? it would be great, but something new for this 2nd b'day would be a good direction towards making 5am better? because i've been asked on a few different occasion the following question:
"Is 5am going downhill?"
some of them said the attendance has been suck, barber adagio does nothing for them anymore, why wasn't steve playing at new horizons but pana was.. that sort of stuff..
to which i reply i have absolutely no fucking idea since i don't promote for 5am nor do i care about the whole fucking scene politics. im jaded enough already.
now, onto the subject of 'playing anthems at 10pm'
haha.. i must say that after seeing DJ B's performance on two different occasion, i'm quite sceptical about his ability to construct a set which flows well. all i hear at new horizons 2 was fucking anthems, all the way. now i won't say that he'll REALLY play anthems at 10pm. i'm just being sarcastic. however, if he do play his set progression well, i'll take back what i said, but until then, no enthusiasm.

quite possibly new thread time, however.. most definately a very challenging role, however still on the same importance as the key timeslot to maintain the crowds rockingness... most imperiative that masstif tunes arent played early as it will 'putting it in sexual conotations' preejaculate the crowd too early.... the early dj's are the ones who usually do the hard work (e.g schmooze the lady, buy them the drinks.. say the right words, get the attraction happening, and get the physical stuff started), whilst the people later on in the night are the ones who get the banging into full swing
either way, i think all dj's on here, whether they play prog/melodic prog/trance or whatever, would love th have that opportunity, of being in prime slot, rocking the crowd with their own chosen genre, however sometimes this just isnt possible, so adaptibility is key if longevity is to be maintained.
i hope that made some sense

Im interested also
Should a dj be versatile enough to play any time slot he is given or should a promoter book dj and place him in the appropriate time slot, according to the style that he/she plays?
The age old debate.
Of course dj's should be versatile in what they play, but on the other hand the promoter really should be able to structure the night according to the styles and generes of his/her djs. In being versatile though, a dj should NOT be forced to stray from the style he/she plays (eg, play an opening set, which imo should be progressive and he/she plays more driving tunes)
For a good trance night I think
MAIN ROOM
10:00-12:00 progressive/minimal
12:00-1:00 something that builds/leads up to the international
1:00-2:30 international/guest
2:30-3:30 uplifting
3:30-5:30 uplifting/driving
5:30-7:00 driving/tech
Australia has enough suitable djs to run a most perfectly well progressed night.
I think the two problems that are evident in the Australian trance nights today are firstly set times too short, this causes djs to come out with nothing but anthems. The second is that djs get placed in random times, not times that suit the style they play. I think if we booked djs for the times that suit their sound people would come earlier and stay later to see the night progress. A few years ago we go out about 10 and the club would be packed screaming for one more at seven am. Think about now.go 12, home 4. The night just feels flat because there is no structure to the sound.
Hope my rambling makes sense my 4.267 cents worth

imo this is pretty damn accurate - although i'd suggest something more along the lines of:
10:00-12:00 progressive/minimal
12:00-1:30 techy moving towards the style that the international will play
1:30-3:00 international/guest
3:00-4:30 driving
4:30-5:30 uplifting
5:30-7:00 driving/uplifting
for those who are questioning this - let me explain
10-12: of course its mandatory to have someone playing prog at the start, as discussed it gets the brain ready for some good edm and anthems etc with an empty dancefloor don't look right
12-1.30: get the tech in so that people start nodding their heads while they talk - tech beat is enjoyable and (as far as my knowledge goes) the tracks are generally a bit shorter than trance tracks. now you get people's attention. those who have had their pills and other drugs will start rocking as the music progresses toward the style of who they are there to see
1.30-3.30: the international, nuff said
3.00-4.30: driving - keep the beat fkn ROCKING while people are up and dancing. progress the sets so that they flow, and don't stop increasing the pace
4:30-5.30: uplifting - give everyone a break while they're all still loved up and having a good night. the not-so-hardcore people will have started to file out by 5.30, leaving the ones who aren't going to stop rocking - who still want more
5.30-CL: bring back that driving style to rock the night to a close given that the majority of the people who are still there are generally either:
a: supporting the dj
b: supporting the promoting crew
c: have lots of drugs and just love to rock thru to the next night
thats my idea of a good night, anyways

i still prefer vi's option for driving/tech set for closing man. don't get me wrong i reckon uplifting is great. but by the time the clock hits 5.00 am, this is what happens: 1) softcocks went home 2)girlfriends nags their bf to take them home and fuck them senseless 3) the munters-before-11pm passed out on the chairs 4) the rest is on their 2nd pill.
i reckon the best way to close a night is to leave it with a fuckn big bang. remember altitude when JPL close with basic dawn - pure thrust (nu nrg remix) . i think uplifting by itself just wont quite cut it. but drop tech tracks to close and i think you'll get the night made
Signum - Second Wave
Mojado - El Toro
Robert Natus & Arkus P. - Hardcore Salsa
Marco V - Simulated
Marco V - del C:\*.mp3
Cohen vs. Deluxe - Just Kick (Carl Cox rmx)
what do you think?

Hand this woman the reins!
Cept, I might have to play earlier - case I get too mangled first as I seem to have a reputation for..
(edit: which is actually not the case... everytime..)
Plus - you really should just put scott from 2:10 till 3 coz if Albs needed a 'break' that's how it would end up anyway
Posted by G`Dave on Mar-25-2005 13:34:
Hahahaha, that's classic, my kind of night. (Were I permanently deaf)
Anyways, back onto the semi-topic, I would have to disagree with this:
| quote: |
10:00-12:00 progressive/minimal
12:00-1:00 something that builds/leads up to the international
1:00-2:30 international/guest
2:30-3:30 uplifting
3:30-5:30 uplifting/driving
5:30-7:00 driving/tech |
I think the driving should be earlier in the night, position around the main act, and the uplifting towards the end.
10-12: Prog
12-1:30: Building trance (building to whatever the main act plays)
1:30-3:30: Main act. (preferably hard edge trance, along the lines of alphazone-ish)
3:30-4:30: Driving hard trance, with a touch of tech
4:30-6: Uplifting hard trance (Nu-NRG style), perhapps a touch of anthem
6-close: Melodic hard trance/trance with some classic tracks towards the end (the stuff that can get even those asleep on the couch back on their feet)
That's my amaturish (<-- I said it for you) opinion, alas I am in the minority, so will have to put up with closing sets of tech. imo, taylored to the drug users.
Posted by limitedtimeonly on Mar-26-2005 01:23:
It seems everyone has an opinion which is great but the more you stress over it more you will scrutinise the night and dj's which will lead to a shit night
if the set times don't work out which i think they will then we move along and try something different for the next party
why don't you all wait and see what happens, who knows you might just enjoy the night
Posted by Aesthetic on Mar-26-2005 08:03:
i'd actually like to stop playing the same tunes as i have been for the last half a decade but every time i incorporate some fresh stuff i notice the punters leave the dance floor.
or maybe its because i just suck balls
