-- Heaven Returns- A Review
Pages (4): « 1 2 [3] 4 »
I was introduced to Heaven by a fellow friend who has spun a few times there (Sharky). The first time I went I saw DJ Sammy (insert insults here) with a friend and it was a blast. Since then, I have taken about 6 new people that never have been to a club (except mexico) and everyone of them now likes electronica.
All of my friends nor I would have been able to see Sammy, Gielien, Thrillseekers, Blank and Jones, George Acosta if it was never 18+. I understand that there are immature people that are 18+, just like there are 21+. Myself have never taken drugs in my life, and it would be terrible to not have a club to go to Friday Nights.
This is a public apology for all stupid people that have ever been to Heaven and wish that Leon keep it 18+, if it means enforcing more rules or not.
You know when it first turned 18+ all of us thought it was a very bad idea. but you know what? it turned out VERY well. The crowd was awesome. As long as heaven doesn't make the front page of Candykids.net or something it should be sweet.
Fuck that!!!!
I had to suffer until I was 21 and I think it's unfair that the 18-20 year olds don't have to. UNFAIR!!!!
They should have to suffer, too!

Kristina you were great!
keep it 18!

damn...... kristina ive never seen u post so much on these boards i think you could have wrote the first TA autobiography.
but its good to hear that you guys had a packed house. and the ppl had a great time. unfortunatly i couldnt make it out, but i know you guys arent going anywhere. so ill have to venture out to LA sometime.
as for whoever said heaven needs to build on marketing, and branding of the club before getting bigger names out, you couldnt be anymore right. i mean we all go spend the big money on the big dj cause he was obviously branded right. markus schulz could be the latest piece of evidence to how good marketing and promotion could boost a name.
heaven returning to 21+ isnt a bad thing. i dont know any other club who has taken so many measures to making sure their following is acceptable to all their descisions. I dont know any other club that asks the general public for dj recomendations. or how the sound is. as far as the music will always draw a bad crowed i would have to disagree. if u have ever been to san diego clubs you can understand. the way they market and promote, draws a more upscale kind of crowed. granted half the crowed can care less who the dj is. but it still is a better market there then it is hear in that aspect, i hope that can show some that the music we listen to isnt just drug music.
but yes heaven is smart for going to 21+ cause it is very important that they build their name which is going strong right now, i mean u have clubs like spundae booking rank-1 and blank and jones. i think you have heaven to compliment for that. brand it and they will come. 18+ after 130 is the right way to do it. I know when i was underage i never had an opertunity like this to still see DJs.
Thanks Kristna for all the 411 and your responce.
Again I know this was the first night at a new venue and there are always kinks when that happens. It is just a mess. I also know that the kinks will be fixed.
As for the Dance Circles, Glowsticks and candy kids. It dosn't bother me that they where there. More power to them! Shoot if you ask nicely and have cool ass photons I will give you a light show
However the dance circles do take up space...
Yes I also know what happens in the back of Spundae.. Why do you think I have my spot in the front other then being as close to the DJ as I can get
Again it dosn't bother me. But if I catch people sitting down in the middle of the dance floor I ask them to stand-up it just takes too much space.
Trance at 145.... I will admit that is not my style. It is just too hard for Trance.. is it even Trance at the BPM???
Now with Avalon.. I know what goes on there and the type of peole that go.. why do you think I do not like that place. It is the Vibe I get from most of clubbers. Sure it is great when all my friends are there since we make our own vibe that I feed from... But when I am there with out friends.. I feel so out of place in a meat market.... ICK!
You know what...
I actully like that Heaven is 18+. I remeber back in the days when I was forced to party at Stakeing rinks, bowling allays, All age massives to listen to music. And that sucked. I could never get a fake since they would never belive it! ( I have a hard time for people to belive my age now! LOL)
Heaven gives the 18+ people to see Dj's they might never get to see at these parties. Granted Massives bring in bigger tallent but with shorter sets. A 1.5- 2 hour dosn't do the big jocks justic imo...
It also introuces the "rave" crowd to the clubbing world and gives kids something to look foward too when they do turn 21.

*FUCK...NO! Heaven should not return to 21+. I can't wait 3 years until I can start going to Heaven, or any other club! It's just not fair! There is NOWHERE ELSE even remotely close to where I live that is 18+ that brings some very great talent, or any talent at all!
*I was one of the friends that came along from SB with SVGmethod. It's sometimes a real bitch having to drive down there. Traffic is such a hassle, there are crazy ass drivers, but I do it because it's the only place around, and because I love club heaven!
*You don't want candy ravers? Dress code can take care of that. You want to get rid of drugs? Have tighter security. Want more space to dance? Get rid of those damn dance circles and glowsticks. It's not a rave, it's a fucking club! Kids acting immature? Kick their asses out to the curb!
One last note.
*How about we get rid of those 40+ asians. NO, IM NOT A RACIST AT ALL! But they were the ones that were really bugging me (NOT ALL, but MOST of them.) They have no shame or respect. The women swing their hair all over the place. The men have two girls that are probably half their age in their arms, and they're swaying back and forth bumping into every ten seconds. Don't say that GA brings that crowd, because they were there for all of the Arena headliners also.
ONCE AGAIN, i'm not saying it's ALL of them. It's like you saying that all of the 18+ are like that, which isn't true either! I'm 18 and have respect for the venue and people that want to have a good time.
I had a fake when I was seventeen. My first of many.
Why? Because I had to. Had no choice.
I welcome partying with resoursefull 19 year olds! Not with pooling 18 year olds.
Sorry but if you can't pull it off you don't belong.
Work the system if you want to see the DJ's. It can be done.

I think one of the main reasons for the 21+ is not what poeple are wearing or how they're acting or drug use. From a club's perspective it has do more with alcohol. A club has to very concerned with losing their liquour license. Without that they might as well shutdown. That is the reason for not letting in 18+ until after 1:30AM.
That is what I meant by it's a struggle for Heaven, the promoter, to keep it 18+. So the fight or argument is not with Heaven, it's with the drinking age laws.

Although PvD is my favorite technical/programming DJ, I wish I could have seen the entire thing. |

| Originally posted by TrancE951 A lot of trance is produced at about 138BPM, correct. Some even lower. However, I don't know one person that spins at zero pitch, lol. Shit, 140 is too slow, IMO. Real energy is at 143-145, and trance can still sound good at 146 or higher (aka the end of Push's set at his first Spundae appearance, anyone? Faster trance set I've ever heard played in a club - and I confirmed he was at 146BPM). A good track is still a good track if it's played faster. In a lot of cases, a rather mediocre track can turn into a kick ass monster simply by playing it faster. If you can't handle 145BPM, there are always the puddles to relax in....... |
Here's my two cents about making a club 18+ or 21+....
First off, I was not at Heaven, so I will not comment on that. But, from past experiences, a club turns 18+ when they are hurting financially. If a club owner wants to make money, 21+ will do the trick. He will make money from bar sales. At a club I work, we made more money with 100 people 21+, then with 400 that are 18+. The problem with keeping a trance club 21+ in LA alive, is that LA doesn't have a strong enough 21+ scene to support the lesser-known trance acts. Yes, your PVD's, Armin and Ferry's will sell out, but your MIKE, Solarscape won't! If you turn the tables around and make the club 18+, the club will obviously be more packed, but bar sales won't be as high as it was with a 21+. With that, more likely some door money will go to compensate for the bar guarantee.
Typically, 21+ promoters keep ticket sales and the club keeps bar sales unless, there is a rent, bar guarantee or another arrangement.
On the other hand, 18+ promoters usually pay rent, split security costs, which cause the promoter's overhead to go out the roof and cutting into its profits. Off course, those are just two scenarios. There are numerous more such as promoters getting paid to promote, the club financing the entire evening, splitting everything 50-50, pay rent and more. It all depends on the venue.
That's why I can see why Leon would want to go back to 21+. I'm sorry, but a 21+ club is a lot less hassle, a lot easier to run, and less liability than that of an 18+. Don't even get me started with an all ages event.
Another problem doing an 18+ club is that you will loose a percentage of that 21+ crowd that can potentially be drinking at the bar, thus loosing money. 18+ will just pay the admission price but will typically not consume more then 2 drinks, either a soda or water. Water and Sodas are cheap compared to alcohol. A club typically mark's up its drinks between 500% and 1000%, depending on the night of the week. That's why water will cost you $4 compared to a mixed drink that will range between $7 and $10. Even more if you go to HOB!
Anyhow, I can keep going on, but I just wanted to show you guys some of the economics that go on behind the scenes of running a club. Hopefully you guys will get a better idea now and stop getting upset at Leon for making business decision that can be fatal to his game.
I came in with not much expectation about the club since it was a grand opening.
Cons:-Yea the line fiasco really got annoying, VIP took so long to get in that is just not a way to go please fix that. -The dancing in circle was really annoying too. -The sound need to be a bit clearer and less banging. -The fact that Acosta did not close was weird.
Pros: -Lighting was pretty tight. –The crowd was good -The vibe was ok. -Security was courteous. -The men bathroom was alright (went 3 times and did not have to wait) –The smoking area was ok.
Musically this was a fun night for me I dance all true Acosta set, but it was not something I would remember. Acosta is a fun dj and I always have a good time nothing more. (Let’s just say the cheese was the trader Joe’s Brie and I like Brie but I prefer Camambert)
Taylor set was boring for me until he played Mr. Brightside.
As far the 18 vs. 21 I don’t really care and understand both side of the fence. I do agree about the younger crowd energy.
But I’m the opinions if you go to a club don’t act like if you go to a rave (do not dance in circle, crazy glow sticks shows, dress up a bit, act like you can handle your drug or alchool…)
