When you can spell properly, I will speak with you.

You're only saying this because you fail to answer my questions.

You still have not answered my questions.

I'm sorry I offend you so much, most people arent intimidated by a 16 year old fag to the extent where they back out of an internet arguement like this.

you guys are retarded. way to ruin a thread.

Posted by mezzir on May-14-2005 05:50:

yeah seriously
anyways, in hopes of sparking up something i'll post my 2 cents without referring to any flames or even constructive posts from this thread. also note, as this is completely opinion based, you MUST realize in threads like this, when people say x is y, they imply that they BELIEVE x is y.

basically, i believe religion to be bullshit. before all the religious people reading this take offense, know that i believe religion to be bullshit in the same way that you believe that heaven and hell exist. that said, i'm actually very interested in the whole subject of religion. religion, in my opinion, is based around conformity, fear, and hope. its all the things humans need.

We need hope for when things look like everything's falling through and you might need something to urge you to keep living. We need fear to keep us from doing things we even might know are hurtful or wrong, so that the general wellbeing of mankind is preserved. And we need conformity just as a way of social comfort. If all of us held similar values but vastly different beliefs, things would be a lot weirder. People find comfort in once weekly visiting a house of worship and seeking comfort in god, but also because millions of others are doing the same thing, so it must be working, right?

Also, i should partially retract my statement earlier that religion is bullshit. Or at least rephrase it. Western/worship-based religion is bullshit. Worship, above all, is bullshit. I would love (and i don't mean this in a sardonic manner) for someone to tell me why worship is so important. I honestly don't get it. I usually divide religion loosely into eastern and western religions. loosely in that there are obviously going to be exceptions. The eastern 'religions' i refer to are those based on philosophy, not worship, e.g. confucianism and buddhism. these 'religions' are based more on codes of conduct and ways of living, because these are the best ways to live. while principles like this exist in christianity, for example, they are in place because God told his people to live this way, and to disobey the rules was to go to hell and be eternally damned.

What i get from this distinction is one main difference between the two streams of thought. western religions promote good behaviour and morals by threatening punishment if you do otherwise; eastern religions promote good behaviour by teaching the way to live peacefully happily and civilly. so while i don't like the concept to be thrown around haphazardly, i do believe western religions are fear based, which i think is very wrong.

i could go on for hours, but lets hear some feedback or counter-arguments for this much

taking what you said on a purely sociological perspective, one can almost see religion as a kind of Slang. Its a particular mode of speech and vernacular that creates an identity, and not only identity, but an ingroup and an outgroup.

religion is a fascinating study of human interaction and the attempt to be connected and be a "self"

then again, whos to say theyre wrong hehe. Its basically a pointless argument, and no one can convince eachother. Im just glad Ive gone past the whole point of arguing about religion.

and yet again, based on sociology, religion is one of the 4 compenents necessary for socialization. Others include education, family and government. I feel religion or any means of spirituality to be a mature development of the human psyche. For example, I don't necessarily agree in organized/congregated religion but i do believe that each individual must obtain some means of spiritual development to prosper in life. For example, I believe in Karma. This would align with Plato's technique that we need a social contract. Organic theory: we feel one anothers pain, as if it were our own. Life, Liberty and Property is not one's own individuals possession's but rather everyone's. There is no nuclear family, but rather all of us as one. Philanthropists who obtain excess resource ex. money, need to lend that out to others who lack possession. Know thy neighbor. Now days, everything is blockaded with a 5 ft tall wooden fence. We no longer obtain social skills because we pay automated computer systems at grocery stores rather than human beings. Hell, do we even know how to socialize? TA by no means helps either... omg im so drunk. scratch this . This irrelvant post has produced no rationality to the context at hand. what was the question lol ? yes, i want kids !

imo religion only exists to create law and order in society. everybody knows this, but everyone denies it so we can live more peacefully. it's all a load of shit. religion is why wars start and people die. seems so pointless considering there is no proof.

jesus-titty-fucking-christ!

Posted by Orbax on May-14-2005 16:01:

Nell, not to have a personal attack on yah mate, but thats the base level argument/statement that everyone makes. If you are going to state an opinion, try to be educated. "religion starts wars"

explain that one without also pulling out politics, tribal territorialism, evolutionary territorialism, xenophobia, and just plain insanity(Hitler)

and also, why dont you stay away from the religious insults (your tag line at the bottom, yes I realize its from a movie-one that I liked, and I thought that line was funny in there too- but to use it in the context you did has zero contructive force behind it.

Using your logic I could say that Atheism causes fights

from the two idiots whove already ruined the thread, lets try to put an actual yah know...intelligent and educated aspect into this.

If you want to spew out anything other than that, just go buy a white tee-shirt and write "I HAVE AN OPINION!" on it with a sharpie.

lol sorry. Now that the brain cells are in process of reproduction eh hem..

I definately agree with your comment on morality. I also am an avid believer in Karma, however don't necessarily agree with congregated religion. It amazes me how many thousands of organized religions believe theirs to be the "true" word of God. This is easily displayed by all diversities knocking door to door, trying to "save" and convert.

Rousseau's "Social Contract" was one in which all people in society live as one family and share all. A nuclear family would cease to exist. Any who have excess, the Philanthropists, need to contribute that excess. Similar to one for all and all for one.

Plato believed in Organic Theory, which is when we all feel each others pain, estatic happiness, anger, etc. I love the idea of this principle.

In conclusion, I just believe it is people who help people. Everyone has isolated themselves. We now have 6 ft. tall wooden fences for our "privacy." As soon as we get home, we put our cars in the garage and disappear into our detached lives. I remember a teacher asking in class how many of us actually knew and talked to our neighbors on a regular basis. There were very, very few. We pay for items through a computerized machine, etc, etc, it could go on and on. Religion needs to be here physically on earth, not some romanticized vision of this greater being that we give our all to. I think it is rather amongst the common man helping one another with sincerity. That is MY religion.

Anyway, no. I would not need a husband of the same religion. As Orbax said, just one with ideals. Actually, even if he was of a different religion, it would interesting getting to know his beliefs. I wouldn't let religion get in the way of love and happiness. Why would God want that?

why

Posted by Coup on May-14-2005 18:17:

my personal belief is religion causes more harm than good. im thinking along the same lines as tiesto14 and nell. im not going to slate my opinion into this thread. i cant be arsed. nor can i be arsed to dig up evidence to defend it, because basically i wouldnt know where to start.

its just my gut feeling.

Because, what value is obtained by merely having this savior God that we worship, give our communion, selves and time since birth when Joe, a ex crack addict is seeking for help, only to be helped by a social worker making $10/hr. What of all the soup kitchens, non-profit organizations to help deplete povery, AIDs, disease, war, injustice. I don't know. I'm not saying there is anything wrong Sunsnail but I have seen some Christians get so caught up in their mythesized idea of God and religious principles, that they fail to see they could extent their duty to him by just merely helping others here on earth. And by help I don't mean preaching door to door. Sometimes religion may take a second lead while maybe just mere attention and acknowledgment of those in need may take first.

well seriously there are different levels of strength in people's belief systems...

obviously i could probably never marry someone who is sooooo fanatically christian or jewish because they are retarded...

but i know lots of people that are christian, but it isn't like the defining characteristic of their life...so i think i could be with someone like that without it ever being a real large problem...
