i generally dont care if i can see a dj. I just care what is coming out of the speakers. Djing should not be an image thing.

It's about the atmosphere, and being close to a DJ is a big part of that

He has many. Plays system soundbar and the comfort zone all the time. He's definately not hard to find when you're partying in Toronto.
Oh and I think the reason why MO is winning the poll is because of the above locals, he is the only one playing trance, and this is a trance music community, furthermore, the half of us TOTAs who prefer house are forced to split our vote among all the other locals.
But in response to Jay's comment on internationals playing too many 'hits', I think the reason for that is the fact that they aren't around Toronto crowds every week, they don't know exactly what makes us move, and have to resort to playing those hits to make the night good. But to counteract that, and to really see an international's talent shine, I believe it's best to see them at their own residencies at their various bi-monthly, quarterly slots at the clubs which book them. It gives them a chance to feel out what that city likes to hear, and play wicked unique tracks, and get really creative with the structure of their sets.
The guvernment doesn't provide that kind of setting for the talent they bring in, which is why I prefer places like Boa.
Oh and as Jayx knows, I don't like MO. Addy's the man.

Dude no Disrespect or bashing was intened and futhermore I did pick my fav's which is just my opinion like everyone elses which I beleive I am still entitled too.
I never said he was a bad or that I do not like him as a DJ just that I did not consider him to be the best. Maybe Versatile is what he is but if it is versatility you like hire a wedding DJ!
Just kidding.

Nah usually the atmosphere is set by the music and the crowd. The only time i like watching the DJ is when i can see what is is actually doing with the records. If its just to see his face i dont really care.

Let me first say how lucky we are to be graced with a dj list like that that we can call LOCALS
what a city this is!!!
i chose mark oliver simply because of what he has done for the scene in this city...Kenny Glasgow also gets honourable mention. The tide is shifting though and in another year or two Deko-ze will be my pick.

Thanks
I have been trying to make it to Comfort Zone for YEARS when I come up, but I always hit that tired mark around 8-9am. Maybe now I have the motivation! I have also heard some relly mixed reviews about the place and can't figure out if its fun or shady?

All he does is copy other big artist's styles.
I mean he is ok for a resident (GUV) DJ but that is all he will ever be.
I think DE-KOZE and Kenny have have a chance to break out plus they have an image too! |
IMHO all of the dj's listed are great talents and have made a great contribution to our Toronto Scene. Thank God. I'd hate to think we were dead in the scene like New York City is now.
I'll have to agree with TrickDaddE that Deko-ze and Kenny have enuf talent to break out. Their performances and image sets them apart. I think it's hard for listeners (like Mr politiks himself JayX1
) to realize the difference...perhaps age and klub experience have a lot to do with the bias in opinions for MO's lead. But those who understand and devote their interest to true dj'g don't share the opinion that MO is the best. And I did see that TrickDaddE wrote "Listen I got nothing against Mark". So I think I can respect his opinion.
And...even though TrickD "asked" How the F**k is Mark Oliver leading the poll?...that does not suggest to me that he is being disrespectul MarkT. It just means that like many others experienced klubbers he is baffled by this vote.
I for one... have been disappointed with MO a few time. and IMO if a dj has a few bad night then that's understandable...but when he has more than a dozen in one year... then he's not on my top list.
I think perhaps we need to agree that we can disagree. And not take things too emotionally to heart.....right MarkT and Shaya007... I mean we don't want a flame war do we
Now about Kenny....I think I wanna hear more of him...now that muzzybear has added a bit more info to my brain. Sounds like a propa guy to meet...I can totally respect da man if he knows how to be one.
Ohhh honourable mention out to miller, blu, M & S and Greg Gow. These dj's got their Shyte together.

You are right. Anybody who has been around long enough has heard him play everything from rare groove and funk all the way to trance and techno with house and breaks in the middle. Most nu skoolers only know mark as a trance dj since that was what he was known for at guv from 98-2001 ish.
There is no doubt that kenny, greg gow, peter and tyrone and a host of other locals are amazing. They excel in what they do. And when the time is right it's great to hear their sets. What impresses me about mark though is that he can play to just about any crowd and not just a specific type. I suspect the times you may have been disappointed is because he was playing for the crowd at the moment and maybe you just werent feeling it since you expected something else? I dont know.
Its funny you mentioned Greg Gow because i was just discussing what a good techno dj he is with a good friend of mine.

Big surprise here...... Sean Miller hands down.
Why you ask? What other local dj has been asked to go on tour with one of the best dj's in the world (Steve Lawler), and produced tracks good enough to be signed by two major record labels (Harlem, Stereo). Not to mention his amazing residency performances at Boa since the club opened.
It's scary to think where this guy will be a year from now.......

Great productions are a great acheivement but this does not a great Dj make.... ALthough its brilliant when the two skills happen to come from the same person

Wow you are quite lashing with the personal slights.... Mama always said that if you have nothing good to say, say nothing.
I don't know why you take this issue so personally. It's only a discussion about a favourite local dj for heaven sake.

Sean's on his way up that's for sure, I keep hearing great things about him, but to answer to your question Mark Oliver went on a very successful tour with Lawler just this past year....
