I love Ableton. Conform or die.

and I agree. Trance kiddies, shut up, do you even know who Richie Hawtin is? Abelton is simply another tool for making music, don't be so closed minded (you don't like it when people are close minded about dance music, now do you?)

Oh and I saw Sasha less than a week ago and he seemed to be interacting with the crowd just fine. The only difference was that he was doing 1000x more with Abelton than he ever could with conventional gear.

Read up and shut up, cuz Abelton is hear to stay.

my sentiments exactly.. 6 months from now lots of people around here will be jamming to minimal, acid, and tech house....mark these words.

and come late july when version 5 comes with the mp3 capability everyone will have a mix going around...

anyone against any new dj tool is just backward and afraid of technology. it doesn't matter what format djs are using to present the material, it's about what they are putting together and what it sounds like. to the ableton snobs, it also doesn't matter if djs aren't using the program to the fullest! sasha was always amazing on decks and he's been ridiculously good on ableton. i'm sure ableton is complex and he's not using every possible function or loading a thousand samples but it is obvious what he is able to do, he is reformatting all the music and mixing elements of it fluidly while programming his own beats over the tracks on the spot making it sound different and unpredictable. he is also playing music that just wouldn't mix together with conventional gear in key and merging it in one fluid piece together. it has diversified his sets, created unique moments with the same songs sounding completely different at the gigs i've seen him do it. what he's doing right now is so much more than what he did before.... and it's not like he's going to use the software any less with time. it's going to get better than this... it is the future certainly, and i'm sure other technology will come our way with time as well. not a bad thing, and it's not losing that much from a dj performance.... who cares if there are no records or discs involved, in the end all mixing and effects usage is done mostly on a mixer, and a controller is basically that with some advanced midi functions.

What I'd like to see is the same kind of concept applied on a piece of hardware where you could twist knobs and buttons rather than using your mouse and a laptop. This could allow the flexibility of ableton without taking away from the DJ's interaction with the crowd. Add something else to the typical decks & mixer setup.

There are hardware controllers for Ableton available.. Or isn't that what you mean (because I'm pretty sure you were aware of that)?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Sasha sets up everything through Ableton and controls the output through Maven.

u honestly thought that ableton djs just sit there with a mouse and laptop?

i think sometimes people need to do some research before they judge things.

I dont have a clue what you just said but i think like with my original comment on page one you got the wrong end of the stick.

I am all for this ableton revolution all i meant by my comment was the death of the old skool disc jockey and the birth of the digital jockey.

saw richie hawtin together with ricardo villalobos a few times!
the got 4 laptops.... and they interact really good with the crowd! so thats no reason for me!

Maybe someone can answer this for me. If I bought Albeton live and then bought the .wav files of the songs could I split up the different sounds that the wave file has or will it just be one whole song like normal? What I am getting at is Sasha and others playing the whole song normally with just some things that they added seperate from the song or can they take out the entire bassline/chorus of one song and replace it with something different? To me that seems like something that would replace every form of media that DJs use and change the way EDM works into a bigger artform than it is currently.

if you hear just a bassline, just a high hat, just a synth, just a kick, just a vocal sasha was sent the parts seperately...


It basically gives sasha the feeling that he can do something right now that no one else in the world can do... Which is why spinning used to be soo important to him.

For people who think that it is not djing because you are using a mouse, just think of using the mouse as selecting a record from your bin because thats all you should be doing with a mouse in ableton. Once ableton has some sort of MIDI type control for selecting files, the mouse will not be needed anymore and live will be (should be) completely controlled by a MIDI controller/mixer.

Can't wait to get my copy of 5, missed the beta version this weekend!

Saw Gabriel and Dresden two weekends ago in Minneapolis using Ableton, and I couldn't really detect a huge difference in capabilities from vinyl or cds. I really don't know how this program works, or what it lets you do exactly, but from a performance standpoint the show was as good as if not better than any I've seen before. But that comes down to track selection and reading the crowd. Knowing what track to play to bring people to their knees or make then put their hands in the air, is something that no program can do for you. So I couldnt give two shits how you make the music come out of the speakers, so long as its good.

Wow THEY are using it too?!

People don't realise that this is a HUGE innovation to live DJing...the capabilities are endless and we've only just gotten started...
