So why exactly couldn't they live on earth, I watched it last night, very good film, but they didn't tell us why they could't live on earth...was it somethin to do with water or some small organism?

Of course they don't tell you, the story of the film is nothing if I read the facts about it, I'm not even going to bother too watch.

In order to comprehend the film you have to comprehend the approach that Spielberg is taking with it.

Looking for logic flaws in the movie is a trivial exercise because the movie is full of them. Nothing AT ALL is logical about the aliens or their invasion.

But that's not the point.

The point is, to recreate a plot from an era where the audience wasn't sophisticated enough to require a logical plot.

Why bother?

Because in doing that, what Spielberg is doing is freeing himself to construct a film which isn't limited by those constraints. And he uses that freedom to stage scenes which wouldn't be possible in a strictly "logical" story.

Thus the lesson of the movie is that as the audience becomes more and more sophisticated, there is still a place and still value to be had in setting a film in a world that isn't "logical".

And as such its up to you the audience to change your perspective with each film based on an individual films intent.

I thought the start was great, but then it went to shit.

Just a few things that annoyed me:

If the damn aliens planned the attack millions of years ago, before there were people here, why the hell didn't they just take the planet when they were here digging down the tripod things?

The endless scene in Tim Robbins' basement. If the aliens were that advanced, couldn't they have made a search thingy that wasn't really stupid? And then Tom Cruise just killed Tim Robbins? Just cause he was getting a little weird?

When they were captured and in the cages on the tripod, they couldn't give a crap when the first guy was sucked into the thing. But when it tried to suck in Tom Cruise, EVERYBODY jumped to save him.

The ending. Praise the Lord. Well, god must have created those aliens too, right? Was the point of it all to reduce the population?

Oh, and why do aliens always have to look like that? It's ok that they weren't scary-looking (they looked like those cute little monkeys). But they are always really slimey. And their ships looked stupid too.

but if they used the humans as fertilizer...they had to wait for there to be a good amount of humans surely.

I thought this was the best alien invasion film ever made, It's not all about seeing the goverment officials reacting to the situation, But watching from the point of an average citizen, If this were to happen right in your backyard, Your first instinct is to run like hell and find a safe spot. The film also had these halocaust like elements where ordinary people become savages to try and survive, And they will do anything to stay alive, Even take someone elses life to save there own, Thats some pretty dark stuff, Stuff thats never been exploded on films until now. If such a thing were to happen, People would first think if it's the terrorist, Anyways, I loved that little joke about Europe.

So I highly recomend this movie to anyone and see it with an open mind.

im really naive and so my first instinct is always to believe everything i see and hear, which is a disadvantage in most cases but when it comes to movies, somewhat benificial because i am not so bloddy hard to please. I really liked this movie, in fact, i had white knuckles the whole time. I grew up with the old movie and the radio broadcast and i thought steven spielburg did a pretty good job. If you didn't like the original, your probably not going to like this one either. Apart from the previously mentioned ridiculous parts.. i also didn't understand how everyones watches and electricity and vehicles weren't working but peoples cameras and video cameras worked really well when they first started comming out of the ground. It made me laugh.

Not all electrical devices were exposed outside when it happens, If you have a video camera stashed into one of those camera bags, It will not be affected since it was never outside when the EMP acured.

just came from the theaters a while ago, i thought it was a great movie. oh yeah and one of the street names in the movie was Van Buuren

wow. this movie was mad disappointing for me. no explanation what so ever and granted it wasnt needed, just woulda been nice. throughout the entire movie i really wanted tom cruise to die, but i knew it wouldnt happen (kinda ruins the suspense when you know he'll be alive at the end of the scene). oh well, this flick gets a huge from me. i thought start to finish it was utter crap and i'm so sorry i decided to go see it.

The movie itself seems more anti-war then an actual war it self, If you noticed, Anyone who desides to go off and fight the aliens, They end up getting killed, Like what happened to the military durring the hilltop battle scenes.

I just watched it. I am torn between absolutely loving it & hating it with a vengence! 70% of this movie was brilliant whilst 30% was utter crap.

There were moments in this film where I was holding onto my seat thinking 'holy fuck!'. When the Tripod powered up & the heat ray fired bursting humans into dust I was in awe. The crowd fled, but to no avail as there was no escape from the heat ray. Those tripods kickarse!!
I loved the fairy scene & the panic in the croud as the tripods emerged over the hill. Brilliant.
The moment when Tom let go of his son & went to get his daughter on the hill was brilliant. Watching the Tripods rising over the hill & the jeeps tumpling down the hill in a ball of fire was very artistic.
The moment under the house where the alien snake eye opened & scared the little girl & The following sequence when Tom went looking for his daughter while the tripod was above him was terrifying. Some fucken great moments.

Those great moments are coupled with some shit ones:
Shit moment #1 - When the reporter lady showed Tom the video of the capsule coming down with the lightning (this should have been left unexplained)
Shit moment #2 - A guy drops a camera that is still working after the lightning has knocked out all electronic devices (unnessesary to even show the camera)
Shit moment #3 - When Tim Robins says that the Tripods were underground for millions of years (again, this should have been left unexplained)
Shit moment #4 - The army guys at the end were directing the croud in neat uniforms in a controlled fashion. They should have become hopeless refugies during the chaos.
Shit moment #5 - At the end a Boston suberb was untouched by the heat ray = stupid. The suberb should have been a pile of rubble with maybe one house partial erect!!

I wanted to see more destruction at the start. It is believable that a guy would try & get his family out of the city pretty fast; BUT Id love to see the tripods ripping the city a new arse hole. It was the reason why I went to see the film. I loved the book & the 1950s movie version & I reckon Jeff Waynes musical version is wonderfull (I also wanted to hear that 'Eve of the War' song in the movie.....), so I was hanging out for some serious Tripod destruction.

I would have also liked to see The Thunderchild in the movie. When the fairy scene started I was hoping that the Thunderchild would come into the bay.... I was happy though that at least the Red Weed had made it into the movie.


The good moments do outway the bad. I give it 7/10.

Theres already talk of some deleted scenes that will be featured on the DVD release, One of them in paticular is a 3 minute scene involving Tripods pulling people from inside buildings.

this movie was decent. i know that this is based off the book but this movie seemed like the bastard child of Independence Day and Signs. in the scene where the tripods first come and all the electrical stuff is fried, how are people using cameras to film them?

anyone know the story behind the red stuff that the aliens are fertilizing with people?? martian weed?? :P

Basically the aliens were using human blood as fertilizer for the red weed.

As to how the Tripods were buried in the first place, That will remain a mystery. I'm hoping the DVD's special features will have more in depth coverage on the making of the film, And hopefully explaining some of the questions many of us would like answered, For me, What sort of technology do these aliens have that somehow created a rift in the Earth's atmostphere, Which caused the strange lightning storms, Which brought the arival of the aliens to our planet, In the original story, There arival via cylinders from Mars.

was a really good movie, good effects but damn i wish that little girl had of died she was shitting me towards the end of it
