seems like the discussion is more about what u mean with 'cheesy' music than examples of cheesy music...

To me, cheesy trance is songs and artists that are of a lower-production value or poorer quality, are very predicatble, and are often times (not all the time) made for a specific reason...to make money. Most of the time these "cheesy trance" are not even "trance" at all, but euro-dance/pop music that is classified as trance. So these artists make songs that are very simple, don't take a long time to make, not much forethought was put into the tracks, and the songs just don't sound "sophisticated". Lasgo, Candee Jay, Rollergirl, Jan Wayne, Flip & Fill, Soda Club, Ian Van Dahl, Ultrabeat, Groove Coverage, and DJ Sammy are among those that I feel are "cheesy".
I would not classify other stuff as cheesy, like Tiesto, Ferry, PvD, Above & Beyond/Oceanlab or Armin as some other people have (and lets not get into an argument about this...please) because they make overall good music and play good music. Sure sometimes they make some songs that aren't as good as others, but I personally think they are pretty much consistently NOT cheesy. Just because a DJ/Producer (s) release some songs that are more pop-orientated, that doesn't mean they should be labeled "cheesy".

ah, we have had many long drawn out arguments over that very point Spirit5 et al. I hope the kids in here will spare you guys that drama.
but if you want to understand where people are coming from when they put those guys in the cheese category, have a look at a tracklist of what DJ sammy plays, or listen to some of those cheese artists you mentioned side by side with ceratin songs by the big trancers. You do find alot of nonsense lyrics, simple unsophisticated production coming from them, and it didn't haver armin or tiesto's name on it you could almost swear it was cheesy popshit.
Just stick around for a while, you will see.

once your tastes evolve (they have to), you will progress on to other types, styles, genres, whatever; of music. im willing to bet that the majority of EDM listeners start with trance. im also willing to bet that once you have spent some good time with EDM as a whole, your tastes will have changed. people just don't start listening to mainstream trance (the genre some might call cheesy) after having a long history in their local underground breakcore movment. it happens the other way around. this happens because mainstream music (dont even begin to tell me trance isnt mainstream) is accessible. trance is relatively mainstream, therefore its alot easier to stuble across and discover it than alot of the more underground types of electronic music, or music in general. now dont start the arguement about how trance is popular because its good. trance is popular because its formulaic. formulaic sells. look at pop and hiphop. half the popular mainstream shit out there...dont begin to tell me its good. but there ARE people who defend it and listen to it, even though we call it shit, or cheesy, etc. same thing here, guys. just on a minor scale.
look at alot of the producers that we have here on these boards. alot of them tend to try and make trance music. ive been there, man. you start a song with a specific intention. in these cases, it seems to be that the intention is trance music. even unknowingly, to the subtlest details, you take influence from the music you listen to. i guess thats a bad example because not all of you can relate.
back to what i was saying before. you start listening to trance (or any mainstream music) first because of the accessibility. everyone starts listening to mainstream music when they get into it. sometimes it takes years, sometimes months. but thats how everyone starts, give or take the luckey few who grow up without such influences. again, as your tastes expand and progress, which they do over time, your thirst and need for new music to listen to, grows. SO you dig deeper. alot of the people who have answered that calling and dug deeper, tend to bash on the more mainstream music because some how the whole process of expanding tastes which i described, seems somehow evident to them. and in this case, people get REALLY defensive because trance is built around emotion. hip-hop isn't built around powerful layed SS chords or love-injected vocals, "fuck" "bitch" "YEEEAH!" doesnt stir as much emotion, for sure. so your dealing with a very powerful genre. thats why i think people latch on to it and defend it the way they do, because when your stuck in that aformentioned mainstream progression process, the music your listening to, is all you know. thats the thing with mainstream music. its formulaic, so there IS something for everyone. if music was so intensely varied in the mainstream, people new to the scene would find thing much to radical and different for them. hence why people tend to hand to genres and defend them so much. and like i said, when your dealing with something that sparks as much emotive as trance...well you got a bunch of people on guard, on edge, and ready to argue. hence these annoying fucking bitch-fests with people talking shit and defending things they know FUCK ALL about. that means you gouryella. if you dont know why im pointing you, you must have not read what i so generously spent 5 minutes typing, above.

Cheese music can be very good, quit being a closed minded asshole. Go to a club and then come back and tell me its not effective.

| Originally posted by DJ Mikey Mike I see where you are coming from with the examples you have given, and somewhat agree with most, but this? Really? I can see no reason why you would bring this up other than to be controversial. This is probably my most listened to track, but for the sake of it I just dug it out again to get some sort of perspective on your point of view, and I still cannot think for the life of me why you would put this amongst the other tracks listed. |
What?
There's fucking loads...I mean, wtf is up with this topic.
But since many people are choosing slightly more controversial options, I shall do the same. Here is my list of tunes that people bum, whereas I think they are cheese:
Armin feat. Justine - Burned With Desire
System F - Out Of The Blue
Tiesto - Just Be (Antillas Club Mix)
Lange - Drifting Away (nice bassline, but sorry)
Andain - Beautiful Things (just take your guitars and your "omg i luv u so much

" music and FUCK OFF)
Interstate - I Found U (it's not really cheese, it's just gay)
Every formulaic song made with the sole purpose of fattening someone's wallet is cheese.

Yes because liking Sasha & Digweed makes you an 'elitist.' Fucking hell. Most (and I use that word loosely) people who are listening to Sasha these days were reaching for the lasers less than a year ago to Tiesto. Makes me cringe.
