Interesting thread.

I had a Numark DJ-In-A-Box setup that I took into my halls. I never, even for one second, got worried about people knicking stuff. As someone said, it's not too easy to knick a turntable! You'll inevitably get some problems about noise, but you'll also get known in your first few weeks as "the dude who brought along his whole sound system".

last year in the dorms i brought my decks, mixer and tons of records.. i just 'borrowed' a table from the lounge on the first floor for it all, and used my normal desk like normal. my setup was right next to my bed, with about 15cm between them, so i would have to sit on my bed to spin.. but it was worth it. so worth it.

did you have a roommate?

You can insure your setup separately if you're losing sleep over them getting stolen. I don't understand why music has to be played louder than a usual stereo would be just because you're practising. Sure it feels nice to crank it up, but it's not really necessary is it?

To save space, I play my decks through my stereo and use a laptop computer. I have a kind of carpet-desk type arrangment - a bunch of cushions on the floor and a thing to lean on where I do written work and reading.

you are more precise and accurate when the volume is cranked up and its easier to beatmatch because you can feel the beat. I am not saying super high volumes but around 95 dbs is adequate to mix well btw having good speakers is good for when you have to dj a party and you have nothing else
