its about time Sony woke up. They were getting killed in the global market for so long. The problem is, its all proprietary technology, and they don't want to merge with other companies, always want to stand on their own. I think it really hurt them.
They also have special circumstances to deal with, because they own a major record label. They have to deal with the politics of fighting piracy on one hand, and then making players which are compatible with that piracy on the other hand

tricky? hell ya. I remember they came out with the first tiny player with 20 gigs, ipod mini size, but with 20gigs. Only problem was, it only played Sony's mp3 format. So you either had to transcode everything, or re-rip all your cds. Pain in the ass! One of my friends bought it, against my recomendation, and he broke, and was fine with that. He now has an Iriver, and is happier.
The fact is, they tried to make both hands happy, this way, you couldnt play downloaded music on it, very easily, but the end user was so frustrated it didnt matter.
Sony is starting to turn around though. The impact of iTunes has helped, so Sony launched its own music purchasing program, not very successfull at this point in time. They have got to see the big picture.
There are lots of smaller companies like Iriver and Achros coming out with very functional players at decent prices, because the technology is now cheap. They cannot afford to stand alone anymore, the globalized market no longer works like that.

But they dont look attractive and I very much dont like the design. I need a balance of both: something I am pleased with aesthetically, that also has the funactionality that I want/need.

I guess it depends what you're looking for in a playback device. I myself do not care about how it looks. I'm not buying it for looks. I'm buying it for it's "quality". I consider the Sony a "higher quality" product because it has longer battery life (~70hrs?) and a screen. The iPod shuffle has neither of these.
Granted, the Sony product is $80 more expensive, but that is 80 I'm willing to pay considering the extra features the Sony product has.

I would 100% pick those Sony products over an iPod shuffle ANYDAY of the week.
No whether I'd buy one over a iPod (orig., mini or photo), no, I wouldn't -- but they're not really comparable -- they're in difference classes.
But certainly, you're right Graham, I'd rather own and pay that extra 80$ for the Sony than the shuffle.

But besides looks, what does the original iPod have over Sony's NWE407L Network Walkman 1 GB MP3 Flash Player?

My 5GB iPod is from 2001.
That said, I have a 3rd-generation 15GB iPod currently.

The ability for me to trasfer over my Contacts, Calendar, memos (which actually I do write to myself when going place to view on my iPod... ie. directions or notes for stuff to do), etc. etc. (including weather too).
Most of those I couldnt honestly care about -- they are not selling points... BUT, the CONTACTS function is CRITICAL to me... i dont use cellphones and I need to know ppl's number when not at home and dont have Outlook handy -- store EVERYTHING in Outlook Contacts, email, phone numbers, address, birthday, IT ALL!
That lovely ability to be able to put on my contacts is a pure godsend.

They are not in different price classes though. They are about the same price. With the Sony Network Walkman, you're basically sacrificing battery life for space (iPod). I guess it depends on your usage patterns.
