Not trance.

Most vocals in trance are for gays, so I don't listen to it.

but I like 'clear blue water'

I dont know about that. There is quite a few nice vocal trance tracks out there.

Great track, especially the Ferry Corsten Remix.

I think it all depends on the song and the particular vocals. Take "In my memory" by Tiesto....that song is just fukin amazing...the original and remix (not sure which one). The soft female vocals are pretty much pivotal to the entire song. Probably my all time favourite trance song is "Heaven's Earth"(matt darey remix) by Delerium. Again, that song pretty much relies on the vocals (even though they're ridiculously high and i don't understand everything she's saying, makes it all the more interesting..) despite the amazing melodies. Those are good examples of trance songs with lyrics that work really well. Take "Let the light shine in"-darren tate vs. jono grant(another one of my faves), you put lyrics in that song and it's garbage. But yeah I agree that the female vocals work best.

For one thing, they add feeling to the song. Instruments can't reproduce the sound of a voice and make it feel attractive.
But the reason I like them so much is because I can sing with them. You all my have sucky voices, but mine is fine. Singing the song is the closest you can possibly get to the song without being it (which is impossible). All those times where there is a perfect musical buildup and want to jump right into the song....when there are vocals you can jump about 85% in and start singing, otherwise you're left longing for more, wishing you were the song. I find songs with vocals (even if the words suck) to be simply more satisfying than purely instrumental tracks. If the vocals musically complement the music, then they've just added another layer of feeling. Thats why they're there.

I don't agree. Vocals I feel, make us more susceptible to bias before we even push the play button. They deplete all or maybe most imagination. What I find so profound of electronic music is its ability to create such emotion minus the humane characteristics of a human voice. I could give you, just as well as everyone else could, instrumental tracks that successfully mimic the warm tonality to a point you can feel what is being said without Sarch Mclachlan having to tell you.

99.9% of trance vocals are terrible, vacuous lyrics that ruin the chances of a song. Is it really acceptable when the best you can do is "tolerable"?

I can't think of a single trance song where I actually like the lyrics... there's one I've been digging recently, but it's more like electro: Spies & Holeg feat. BAKXII - Lost in Darkness (Fuzzion Remix)... killer song but is it even trance?

Electronic music and especially trance is supposed to go beyond language straight into your core... fill it up with frilly nonsense about "you make me wanna fly" and what you have is utter garbage.

sometimes its fun to have a break from standing there stroking your chin and/or other body parts analyzing the track and determining whether its cool to say i like this artist or not and sing along

yah, i find that generally vocal tracks seem to have less layers, and less noise". I like that. However, if u got rid of the vocals, and still didn't have the extra layers in the background, it'd be shit.

the vocals help make up for the less layers...

If done well, vocals are good. But sometimes it's hard to tell whether a track is better, with or without vocals:

Jono Grant (and some other guy, forgot his name)- Let the Light Shine in (vocal version).

Vs

Jono Grant (and some other guy, forgot his name) - Let the Light shine in (Tiesto Nyana version)...

^
i honestly can't decide in that case... both are 2 of the best tracks i've ever heard.

yah, i think that's the case for most ppl...

usualy the vocals are non-sensical, or corny bullshit... jesus, some of the vocals, teeny-boppers would just love.

Posted by Abhay on Oct-25-2005 14:19:

for ppl who think vocals are a thing of the past:

Andain - Beautiful things

Motorcycle - as the rush comes

and SATELLITE refers to the moon.. damn it.... sattelite is another word for the MOON...

the moon is SATTELITE of the sun..

jupiter has more than 20 SATTELITES.

Posted by Philby on Oct-25-2005 14:24:

sif not know darren tate "some other guy"
looks like you have a bit of angst about satellites...i dont think its really general knowledge that satellite is another word for moon.

What, are you saying they are examples of good lyrics?

Yes, that would be something that orbits something.

Regardless, the fact that she refers to herself as a singing one of these still makes no sense.

"Hey baby, I'm going to walk circles around you whilst warbling on about how much of a bunnyboiler I am!"

I'd say the Andain yes, ATRC HELL NO

Beautiful Things is actually has one of my fav vocals ever

Posted by Col on Oct-25-2005 14:39:

Why does 'Satellite' make no sense?

The point of the track is that despite being "half a world away", communication can still take place because the girl is a satellite, which is an orbitting object which can overlook and communicate with any part of the world from its position in space.

Are you reading back what you wrote?
It's completely ludicrous

Posted by Col on Oct-25-2005 16:30:

It's a metaphor.
Not particularly well written, but it makes sense to me.

actually the moon is a sattelite of the earth...

Jason's idea of ok to great vocals used in tunes...

Spooky - Belong
Way Out West - Melt
Lustral - Broken (Way Out West Mix)
Mara - One (Hamel's Implant Mix)
Amoeba Assassin - Piledriver (Grayed Out Summer Mix)
Rui da Silva - Touch Me
Ortz - We Don't Talk (Brother Brown Mix)
Duncan Sheik - On A High (Gabriel & Dresden's Love From Humboldt Mix)
Aya - Sean (Eric's 2WFU Dub)
Deep Dish - Flashdance (Fuck Me I'm Famous Mix)
Paris & Healy - Blue
Sia - Breath Me (Ulrich Schnauss Mix)
Spooky - New Light

stuff like that...

what makes a good vocal track in my mind...

1. well written lyrics and talented vocalist
2. the interplay between the vocals and the tune

I know its a metaphor, I was getting at that it was poorly written.

One cannot hide a shitty line in lyrics behind abstractness.

A track I really love, has alright vocals, apart from one horrendous line.

Rio Klein - Fearless (Agnelli & Nelson)

I quite like the vocalists voice, but the line in the second verse "Coat me in your pollen, I'll grow from underneath"

Yes, most people do know that, but I don't see how she calling herself a moon makes it any better
