If you want to do something innovative, do it with the gear you already have, like Chris Liebing for example.

He plays with 2 decks on FS, and one deck with vinyls he brings to the gig. Then he has a 16 loop box he loops in with his 3 decks. Then! he brings a laptop with ableton live to mix in some of his newest productions with the stuff he is playing on the decks. Better yet, he has an Air-FX aswell... You dont need to sell yourself to software to be innovative.

hmm... nah i have the airfx and sadly it doesnt have any stutter effects

This video keeps showing up here and everytime it brings up the same debate. If I remember correctly this video is from early 2004 when none of the top jocks were using Live yet. Now it seems like everyone's using it - Sasha, PvD, Zabiela, Liebing - and it's professional user base just keeps growing. It seems to me like BT's prediction might be closer to reality than everyone would care to admit.

The vast majority of djs will be using cdj's and ableton in the future. Why? Because they simplify the most mechanical and basic tasks of the dj: beatmatching and cueing. If you're thinking, "Those two skill are what makes a dj", you really should get your head out of your ass and realize that those are just things you need to learn on the way to actually doing creative stuff...

Personaly, i think vinyl's wont die anytime soon. If you think for
the fact that not every DJ get's single's & promo's on CD, and how
profitting is this Mp3 business for all those labels ?.

I agree that Live is a new and a creative way for DJ, but it realy
is quite new. And it will take time to get to everyone's use. BT's
words wont change that fact.

the stutter effect is a sampler trick whereby you set and keep repeating loop points. you can stutter on any sampler really but the important thing is to be creative with it. too many psy tunes to mention use sampler stuttering as a staple in the track - its getting to the stage where you begin to feel - have i heard all there is to hear from this trick already? time will tell.

note that gating != stuttering. gating is a sidechain trick that you can do on a mixing console and in pretty much every digital audio workstation (DAW) that allows sidechain inputs. you can even do it on DAWs that dont like fl studio by linking 2 inputs to the same midi channel and manually automating the effect send (in this case channel gain).

on the topic of digital audio workstations, i always felt that live production was THE thing that would leave spinning records for dust.

a good sense of timing and a certain degree of musicianship are required, but id rather the producer bought his synths and drum machines along and let rip live. rather than spin his own records. its not that hard since, with all my gear hooked up im playing live overdubs on my own tracks. and this is with buffer latency on it. but then i have a pretty slow PC.

the potential for live remixing is amazing. rewriting songs to fit the mood of a specific event for instance. the actual performance would be incredible as well. many VAs these days seem to be designed with live performance in mind. im thinking dave smith's poly evolver and clavier's nord lead. even in producing terms, these instruments are better for doing live takes rather than sequencing.

fake edit: i forgot about turntablism since theres no beating the real deal, so i guess parts of my reply are moot. i think i just love seeing a good performance either way. live performance, or spinning. scratch perverts and yoji were 2 examples where i just laughed my ass off the whole time. they were that good.

as long as theres some kind of creativity going on and theres an energy about it, id be more than happy. but if i ever got into a position where my songs got signed, i would be more interested in performing them live. although thats probably because im an ok keyboardist/guitarist whilst im a totally shit DJ :\
