im 20 and noob

since we're on the topic of age.

im just curious if you guys think there is a disadvantage (or maybe non) for DJs 18-20. (more specifically in the US).

im almost 20 and i live near Washington DC and i think there is a slight disadvantage to me since im not 21 yet.
i.e. going to the 21+ club nights to support other locals or getting to know other promoters etc etc.
but i do have some networking by hosting an EDM show at my university.

just wondering if anyone has thought about it...

Been listening to EDM for about 6-7 years, got dj software about 3 years ago, got techs 1.5 years ago...then its been very light on and off practicing since then (no time)

I hsve the title at 56.

It's interesting when I go into a club cuz people must think I'm a barstar or narc or something. I've had people stare at me and be very rude, ask what I'm doing there, pissed that anyone so old is in their club and can't believe anyone that old can have any appreciation of the music. The irony is that many of the younger people are not at the party for the music, but I am.

Anyway I have fun and am always surprised how the music can get people moving. I just DJ house parties at friends' (age 20+) and have done a couple of clubs. But hope to do more in the future.

i recently turned 17, got decks bit before i turned 16, and been messing around on my comp since i've known how to use one. been producing since about 14 tho. i havent reeli been dj'ing all that much because of school and i just started sliding my interest more towards production, but when i hop behind them tables again i have alot of fun. another reason i havnet been using my gear is i quit my job and havent had any money to pay for records. But now im getting much closer to the legal age of clubbing (18) im gonna start crankin the dj'in again coz then i'll b able to network alot better and auctualli play out.

and thats my life story......

I remember seeing the "Children of Ibiza" documentry that was made by a TA and J00F was in there saying he got a booking in Ibiza when he was 16. wow

SPeaking of that, I'm going to Ibiza all summer, hoping to get a job and some bookings there. Became pretty good friends with a resident DJ there and really hoping to have a lot of fun.

h8a.... u can't make judgement calls of ppl u don't know, from simple 1 or 2 line statements...

I don't understand why you don't want to take DJing seriously until after you graduate. After you graduate you'll probably try and start a career which, will leave you with even less time to take DJing seriously.

I'm not trying to knock you or saying you should quit or anything like that. It just seems maybe you're shooting yourself in the foot, or digging yourself a little hole that you will have to climb out later. Especially if your goals are ultimately to play regular gigs.

Wow, do u want to spin tunes or be a brand name? Im all about connections and building myself as a dj, but at the end of the day, i just wanna spin records. You can be a great DJ just in your bedoroom, or out of your bedoroom. maybe success is realitive, but i dont think success should be measured by your top 100 poll bumber or similar. This is an art man, not a science. I dont think your mindset is going to take you places.. but then again, what do i know? I hope im helping not hurting.. I dont want a flame war, i just sugeest you assess your goals as a dj, you goals for the future, and the why.. why you do iut and what it all means to you.

Ive done this multiple times, and found it to be super helpful in keeping me focused and on top of MY game.

I have made my judgments based on LOTs of posts, not just one or two..

and i wanna be a damn good DJ....

I wanna make the most of my youth, and be the best i can, before getting older, whilst my body and mind are still at it's peak. I think when ur this small, and struggling to get ur name out, and not making a cent, it's important to branch out and make a name for urself, so success is relative.... later on, i dunno. I'll take things one step at a time.

my course is too hard to focus on both things at once... for me anyway ...

both DJing and my course require a fair degree of commitment, and i want to be damn good at both. I think it's best i focus on one at a time.

I'll be 30 in a few weeks, and I'm glad to be 30. I have more free time now than I ever did during school (however I'm also unmarried with no kids).

And having a career definately helps pay for the nice gear and records.

Concentrate on your coursework and career first, because even if you are the best DJ in the world your chances of making it big are slim to none (sad, but it's the truth).

I think once you get a little older people tend to respect you more. For me to take up DJ'ing a year ago at 29 shows that I'm doing it for the right reasons, that I'm passionate and serious about the music.

I've played out once, and look forward to playing out again. It's something that I want to pursue, but at the end of the day I DJ because I love it.

You sound like a worse perfectionist than I am. I was the same because I didn't want to be serious about DJing until after I finished my Chemistry B.S., but I plan on going to grad school, so if I don't make connections before then I can say goodbye to ever having a chance to play out at venues. I understand where you are coming from though.

I turn 15 on Jan 2

I've been mixing since augest (I learned pretty quick to heh) and about 1 year of using software before turntables. I hope I get technics soon, my tt200's don't hold their pitch at all.

U seem to be contradicting yourself... you say you want to make the most of your youth(as a dj im assuming), but need to get your degree first... shoot, you can go get your degree at any time during your life right? i dunno man.. good luck with all of what your doing.. I prefer to take all the steps at a time... go all out.. produce mix, school, gigs, the more the better!

I played my first proper gig at 15, all depends on the chances the promoters are willing to take and local laws.

In peru the age laws werent enforeced, so i it didnt matter.. ive bene clubbing since i was like 13 , Shit, i played a gig this summer with Tony Morello in Calgary and i was 16.. good thing i had a fake id.
