The saying only goes so far, and not by any means meant to be taken that literally. Just my opinion.

No offense mate, but for someone who claims to have worked in the industry for 8 years, you sound like you've got a pretty bad attitude about your job:

Very professional. Oooh, he snapped his fingers! Let's throw a drink in his eye!

Also what other industry makes 50,000+ a year tax free?
hehe

And you still have the chutzpah to complain. For that kind of money you probably oughta suck it up... or find a different job.

I was going to keep my mouth shut but subtlety doesn't seem to be working in here. You're paid to serve customers - do your friggin' job, minus the attitude. If you're so unprofessional that you can't deal with someone WHO SNAPS THEIR FINGERS then you seriously ought to have gotten fired. Just hope that one of these customers doesn't complain to your manager, buddy!

Posted by ninjahola on Dec-05-2005 04:27:

Wow, dude you take a lot of shit literally eh....and take it easy man, you're gonna pop a blood vessel. You really seem to care about this customer service thing don't you. I was obviously kidding about putting lime concentrate into peoples eyes that snap their fingers...
Its unprofessional yes but not to think about it, have you ever been insulted??? Guess not.
Its not like you just brush off a personal insult, its human to be offended.
I'm not sick of my job, I love working with people, and judging by the tips I make, people like being served by me. So you stick to your industry which is probably something involving a computer and a cubicle...and I'll stick to mine...Relax dude.
One thing about dealing with people that you have sadly missed, is that sometimes you have to let them form their own opinion based on experience .
And there is no attitude when I do my job, I'm acting, thats all Waiting/Bartending is. Ask anyone in the industry.

Posted by milos on Dec-05-2005 04:42:

thats enough, let me pick a winner. i'm gona side with ninjahola, and thats not only based on 3 years waiting and 1 year of restaurant management. rather its based on not being so 'by the book' and 'proper' as you expect everything to be. get your head out of your ass diginut

Well, the prevalence of this anti-customer and anti-"by the book" attitude definitely seems to explain the shit service I get from time to time.

Strange how many assumptions people are making about me and my job/experience. I don't see how that's relevant, but with respect to the cubicle comment, I have my own office and deal with many people from day to day.

It strikes me as genuinely strange that some people in the service industry believe that the best way to deal with a difficult customer is to do anything other than keep their cool and brush it off. That's not "the book" - that's reality. Read Dale Carnegie sometime - I can't pretend that apply his principles in every situation in my every day life, but for business (especially the service industry), I'd tend to take his advice and the advice of other successful businessmen over the rantings of jaded and bitter waiters and waitresses anyday.

for the most part, you're right. as part of our job, we have to take a lot of shit..and be cool with it. i've bitten my lip soo many times, and then come back being nicer then ever.."u get more bees with honey then vinegar". and in our industry we DO depend on tips, so it is in our best interest to be nice. for myself, i love establishing a good rapport with my members, whether it be for a 20 second drink, or a 6 hr dinner, and i think most people in the service industry do and probably are good at it (hence them still having jobs)

of course i have dealt with tables that are rude to me, or standoffish. i have never spat in food, of given them BAD service. sure i won't chat with them, or smile as often, or compliment her scarf, but i don't think those types of tables WANT that interference.

however, there are cases where the customer crosses the line. we have a job to do, and people that don't say hi..yeah.. we may not LIKE it, but its handleable. but the people that berate us..call us stupid, worthless (especially b/c of something out of our control)..people who grope us, make lewd comments, lie to get discounts...this is NOT part of the job..ANY JOB!

so if u bark out an order instead of answering my "hi how are you?" and are generally rude, i will take your order..i won't spit in your food, and i won't ignore your needs..(i WILL talk behind your back with the other servers)

but if cross that line..i will refuse to serve you. i don't need your tips that badly that i must put up with name-calling and u slapping my ass

and BTW..ppl remember, even though u only deal with the waitress or bartender, there is a LOT of reasons why your food is cold or late or even wrong. so be nice when u complain about something. s/he is bearing the brunt from both you, her manager who must know deal with it and the kitchen, who has to do extra work..and it could very well not have been his/her fault

There are some things that customers should never be able to get away with. Customers are always right within the means of respectable business attitude. If I came into your office and barked order at you in an disrespectful manner, you would tell me to leave your office and not help me at all.

The difference between your job and waitresses is that they sometimes have to deal with drunken men who think their don juans and can say whatever they want cause they paid for a BLT sandwhich and a few pitchers of Canadian.

Posted by yankeeBaby on Dec-06-2005 03:39:

Yeah, we have to be professional, but the customer should also have some manners....I swear some of these people were raised in a barn!!

Its not that tough for mutual respect...how hard is it, for you, as the customer, to come in and just ASK for what you want? (and leave it at that?) Why add the attitude to it when we haven't even had the chance to do anything?

If we mess up, fine, do what you gotta do, but in the mean time, be polite, and we will do the same in return

+1000000000000000

Very well stated.

I have worked in customer service for 6 years, been a waitress only since August, but I have had more than my fair share of assholes to deal with.

Diginut, the customer is not always right. This is a big problem with our society - we use blanket statements like that one to excuse outrageous behaviour that by any means on any level is not right. A customer who gropes my ass is not right. A customer who yells and flips out and swears at me is not right. Half the time, the customer is not right, and people need to start realizing this. We are offering people this excuse to use in their defense for being a prick.

Once I was working at a gas station, sick as a dog with bronchitis and laryngitis, so not only could I not speak, but I was also hacking my guts out. I HAD to go into work, bills needed to be paid, and it was inventory week, my boss "needed me there" or they would be screwed. Anyway, there were two lines, one for everything BUT gas, and the other that could take everything including gas. This was not our decision, the computers were designed this way, and the one computer was simply not equipped to do gas purchases.

There was a large sign above the gas line that said, "this server will take ALL gas purchases". But some guy gets into my line, the one without the gas, and when he comes up and says "20 on pump 7" and I whisper, "you have to pay over there", he flipped out. He yelled and screamed and told me that I was a dumb idiot for not telling him before that he couldn't pay for his gas there, and "now he has to wait all over again". I looked at him and mustered up my strength to try and squeeze some sound out and said "I'm sorry but my till can't take gas". My voice cracked out and was so hoarse you could hardly make out what I was saying, but suddenly the guy looks at me and goes "oh, I'm sorry, I hope you feel better", and he walks to the other line.

WTF?!?!

I think half the time, people just like to take out their pent up aggression on people in customer service because they know they cannot do anything about it. "It's their job" and "the customer is always right", so they take advantage of it while the poor clerk or waitress or whoever it is has to take it.

I had hundreds of people yell at me for gas prices. Fuck you buddy, do you honestly think I have any influence on a national commodity?! I'm a fucking clerk getting paid minimum wage and in highschool!

I completely agree with you and I think that's exactly the right attitude. And when I'm on the customer end of things, I also know enough to stay polite when I have a problem, because being rude only makes it less likely to get solved.

I thought this thread was a bit of an overreaction to a pretty banal issue for waiters/waitresses - if a customer who plows through an order can ruin your day or compel you to take "revenge" on them or their order, you ought to be doing a different job. There's also nothing to indicate that this customer "barked" his/her order... they could have made their order in a perfectly polite tone of voice and just skipped past the standard greeting.

You always have to draw the line somewhere but many people draw it far too soon. People who rise to the levels of upper management are always the ones who know how to handle difficult situations (including difficult customers) with tact, composure, and courtesy. The others tend to drift from one "service" job to another, unable to hold down any of them for more than a few months. Whether they quit or are let go isn't important because it all equates to being an unreliable employee. They drive away customers, they often do their job half-assed because they are "too stressed out", and just having them around is a liability because they might not be around for very long.

I'm not suggesting that you're the latter - as I said, I think you've got the right attitude. Other people here clearly don't, though.

By the way, what you said about cold or late food is true, but consider also that the kitchen staff rarely receive a compliment for preparing a nice meal. You as a service person get all the complaints, but you also get most of the praise - their jobs are completely thankless.
