In addition to what Robert said, Serato has that DJ Feel because you use actual CDs or Vinyl. Ableton is just a computer software with no real DJ feel to it, and it uses a different approach to DJing. Ableton is also a powerful production too. To be able to do a set with Ableton, you need lots of preparation because you have to get your tracks organized way ahead of time. With Serato, it's just like using your normal set up. With serato you can keep mixing in and out of normal CDs/Vinyl and Serato. You can't do that with Ableton. Go ahead and download the free Ableton demo and give it a try.

I'm really curious why he made the switch
anywaone know?? |
Final Scratch 1.0 had so many glitches. It crashed, skipped, sounded like shit. When cueing records it sounded too electronic. You couldn't really SCRATCH either. It was a piece of shit software. I have it, and I stopped using it cuz it kept making me look bad.
Serato is STABLE, vinyl emulation is AMAZING. Serato is becoming the norm for computer mixing all over the west coast. Almost everywhere I go no, I see a Serato set up. Which is good, cuz you just show up with your laptop and BAM! You're set. I see this everywhere from small bars all the way to Avalon!

Woody thank for the information as well as Kristina, you both have sold me on the fact that i need to get rid of the old and get with the new. even though i won't play at a club or do not plan on becomming a DJ I feel I could have alot of fun with this.
Is Serato easy to use once set up and how long before you acutally feel comfortable with it?

It's a piece of cake. Once hooked up, it works just like any other vinyl. You'll get it in one minute.

I can testify to that, never played on serato before...in about 3 minutes over at woodys, was able to mix as good if not better than on normal cdjs! This program is a must for sure!

Serato and Final Sctratch are just made for people who secretly wanna use Ableton but either:
1. Are too dumb to figure it out.
2. Are scared.

I dont understand how you guys cant figure it out...I did...and I'm half retarded

Dude that wasn't a joke, Like for example take me, I am going to buy Serato but I would pay someone lets say $100 or more to teach me exactly how to use it properly and find out all the functions instead of fucking aorund with it.
Knowledge is worth money and since this is the future maybe you should start as everyone needs help with things like this.
Perfect example the Geek Squad, these people make millions going to peoples house and teahcing their clients what to do and such.
As far as matching beat s and mixing that needs to self taught pretty much but as far as learing a complex compture program and all the back end of it, that can taught.

I'll teach you how to use Serato!

But its been said that Vinyl would be giving the best quality because when you have tracks encoded into mp3/wav it sounds like crap compare to vinyl right???
btw very intersting thread

Only if your source is analog then vinyl will sound best, if your source is digital, wav will sound as good if not better than vinyl.
320k mp3 sounds great as well

I'll call you as soon as i buy it, should be next week and certainly kick you down for the time and lessons. In my eyes its better to be taught form someone that knows rather then get frustrated trying to figure shit out and having a kaniption fit.

Also someone told me this week end that Abelton beat matches for you so all you have do is really mix. Is this true as the source was pretty reliable?

lol..."source"
Ableton is a sequencing program, IE, it will play any clip you have in time to anything else playing, providing that clip has been warped using markers that you set manually. The markers tell Ableton how to play the clip so that it will be matched up.
Baisically, its like mix meister, you line up the markers on the beats as precisely as possible, but once you have warped the track and set all the markers, it saves them...so baisically, you beat match once and then save it forever and never have to match it again.
It doesnt do anything for you at all. The auto-warp function is pretty much useless and is not suitable for warping long samples or whole tracks.
I see your point about teaching people, but in all honesty, I know how Ableton works to a certain extent, but I am no expert. I know how to mix with it, and how to do some advanced stuff of the same type that Sasha/Zabs other ableton DJ's are doing...but I'm not Richie Hawtin.
I'll be buying a controller soon which will give me a whole range of new capabilities in Ableton which I cant wait to start using.
You guys should read the ableton.com forums and the TA DJ Booth forum for more info on all these matters...in fact there is talk of making an Ableton sticky in the DJ forum for all the n00bs who keep asking the same questions every week
Posted by Shafer8 on Feb-13-2006 21:35:
Yup that what he said and he also said that if chosen that it automatically beat matches for you the second you srop the track in. I really dont care but simply are just telling you gusy what was told to me.
I would beilve it why not?
Posted by |Thrax| on Feb-13-2006 21:37:
it's not really that easy. but, yea, what clov said. you should check out the other parts of the site.

I have been using Ableton for about 8 months and i have learned alot and can get around the program pretty good. I would be glad to answer any questions about Ableton. I use a Dell computer, m-audio controller and firewire audiophile soundcard.
