Hernan is definately one of the Renaissance Masters. He fkn tore the dance floor up last night. I cant remember the last time I had so much fun @ an event. I need to get some IDs on some of the tracks dropped. Jim Morrison errr I mean Hernan played pr0g the way its supposed to be played Deep, Dark, Dirty and Sexy. I would definately go out and see him again if he is ever in TX.
It was good hanging out with everyone. Zeonfiend it was nice to meet you. Packa you shouldnt have left early after you and Erica left Hernan fkn decimated the place you guys missed the best part of his set. Sure to stay all the way through next time.

did that just happen? i'll comment in the morning when i'm sure i wasn't dreaming...
I got in one hell of a nasty dance orgy that's all I can remember right now.

All I can say about Hernan's set was "Wow". I had a blast tagging with Matthias for the bit that we did. I'm looking forward to our set at the Tiesto show even more now. Randall Jones played some insane tracks last night...big props to him.
The highlight of my night was Hernan playing Jonathan & Bradley -Manhattan (Johan Cyber Edit). He let it mix in for a good while and when it slammed in, the crowd went nuts. Great set by Hernan!!!
Gonna grab some grub. See ya guys at the next show : )

Oh my. Where to begin? Where oh where oh where?
I guess drama first, since it was drama just getting there. I left Fort Hood at about 2015 or 2030 hours, which would give me plenty of time to drive the 45 minutes to 6th and Congress and catch both Dave and Matthias sets, a notion which would leave me unspeakably happy. Lo and behold, it did not go as well as I had presumed. I-35 was a damned disaster, and theyd closed off the ramp to 8th-3rd Sts., so I had to overshoot, come back around through the morass of bottlenecked traffic on Cesar Chavez, and fight my way onto Congress. It was then that the true horror dawned on me: there was no parking left anywhere within a six-block radius of Sky. It was already pushing 2200 by this point, so I spent a good twenty minutes circling the lots like a vulture, hoping someone would pull out and I could exploit, and eventually this is precisely what occurred. I trudged my way to Sky and finally got in on or about 2230.
And things began to look up immediately. The first thing I noticed was that Dave and Matthias were behind the decks at the same time, something I certainly did not expect from the report of the timeslots for the openers prior to Hernan. Nevertheless, it was like having been flash-broiled and then dipped into a vat of Bactine. Dave and Matthias were dropping sick track after sick track of some proggy-minimal-ish tunes to nigh-perfection, and Id already missed half of their set. Unfortunately for them, the Legion of the Dead were in force at Sky, because those hosers were too interested in watching King Kong instead. I admit I was a little upset by what seemed to me to be a waste of good tracks on a group of deadbeats, but as time went on (and the Kong vs. T-Rexes fight ended) the scumbags began gravitating towards the floor and basking in what Matthias and Dave were radiating. So for the last, say, fifteen or twenty minutes, there was life in Sky.
And then some guy in a green hat and white T-shirt strolls up onto the DJ booth with Dave and Matthias, and my confusion began to grow. Its way too early for Hernan, and this cat is obviously not Argentinian or possessing of Hernans hair. I have zero clue who this person is, but Matt turned the decks over to him without blinking and it comes to my attention that the DJ roster has changed significantly from what we were told it would be.
So this guy puts the headphones on, and then the sickness just gets insane. After about ten minutes, I have to ask Dave who the fuck this guy is, because hes crazy good. Dave patiently explains to me that hes Randall Jones.
Randall Jones!! Id heard the name but had never seen him in person. For a surprise, he was definitely worth it. I dont really know what to call what he was dropping on us, but the crowd loved it and so did I, so it really doesnt matter. Point is, his set was twick and sisted and it rocked so hard I thought Id cry. I drank instead; goddamn Crown Royal, Ill never touch you again.
Randall smashed the entire club into a semi-psychotic frenzy, and while he was playing Hernan shows up. Now, I told myself I wasnt going to compare this gig to Ferry Corstens, but Im going to have to, if only to bring to light the vast differences between the two. Hernan tiptoes through the crowd with, like, one guy as his entourage, unlike Ferry who rolled with three or four guys clearing the way for him. Hernan slips up, chats with Randall for a brief moment or two, smiles as Randall warps and twists the tunage and is clearly getting off on it, and then Hernan does something I didnt think Id ever see:
He goes into the crowd and mingles. Hes got, like, half an hour before hes supposed to do his thing and hes out on the floor signing shit and taking pictures. Ferry waited until after his set to do that, and he never mingled. It was kinda neat from a peon worshipping at the image of the master perspective.
Randall isnt stopping, and even when Hernan comes back to the booth, hes in no hurry to assume control. After a little puttering and chatting, Randall turns over the tables to the strident howls of a very appreciative audience (I personally think they should have been screaming for Dave and Matthias set, too, because there was nada wrong with their shit at all) and Hernan takes the club to an entirely different place.
Im pretty smashed by this point, I admit, and a great deal of Hernan is kinda fuzzy around the edges (this hangover is playing havoc with my short-term memory), but the man proved full well why Renaissance called his series The Masters. Gawd day-umm, that guy can thrash a club. Very different energy than Ferry Corsten; where Ferry was almost brutal, Hernan was subtle, and where Ferry was chill, Hernan dropped bombs. It didnt matter, for though Hernan didnt drag in as many folks as Ferry did, those who were there were putty for his grooves. It was early in Hernans set that I ran into Packer, who had cloaked himself by changing his hair and bringing his girlfriend with him (yeah, bro, no ones buying that ploy, shee-it!
) but we ended up bumping into each other anyway. I still owe him two drinks, because he bounced before Hernans set ended (bad move, by the way) and I couldnt add him to my bar tab before he left. Hernan crushed the club until about 0300, and then did an encore with the house lights on and blazing, people who shouldnt have been half-naked were waving their shirts in his face and chanting the soccer Ole Ole thing, and it looked to me like he was just eating it up. I dont think he broke a sweat the whole time, either.
Great night. I never did get to say hey to Matthias, since I was waiting until afterwards so that I could be heard (conversation was almost impossible with the volume Hernan was pumping beats at), though he was hitting on a tall girl right in front of me by the end of the gig but I decided not to interrupt, since she seemed to be digging him or something, but I still got to increase my personal TA meet-and-greet quota by over double what I had already that night (I even met Raymond Enrique, who threw his card and flyers at me and now I want to go to his Houston gig at Dj vu II but Im just not sure I can be there. . .). Dave drove me back to my truck, which was funny because his car was waaaaaaaay further away from Sky than my truck, pimped the H2O Meta show, was tickled to death to have his name on the Tiesto flyer as an opener (dont forget to change your Teknosounds sig), was absolutely ecstatic that Hernan was dropping tracks that he had dropped earlier that night along with Matthias, and I wish someone had recorded this whole thing. Im going to go and try to keep water down now, and I hope to make it to Tiesto in May (slim chance, but I may make it).
Nothing follows, Dealer out.

Good review Nathan!!!
Actually, Hernan was getting pretty pissed off at the guys waving their shirts and flyers in his face. It was mostly because they were putting things over the CDJs and blocking his view of them. When people handed him flyers without blocking anyting, he smiled and signed happily. I was pretty close to Hernan up front so I told him I would stand right in front of the CDJs and block anyone from putting things up there. It pisses me off when people in the crowd don't respect these global DJs properly.
He really liked the Don Da Don cat and I assumed that Randall gave him my cat without my permission (no big deal) so I asked Hernan if I could walk around and talk to him for a sec and he was totally cool with it. I told him about the cat and he said he wanted me to have it back but I said that nothing would make me happier than not only giving it to him, but to one day see a pic of him playing at Creamfields...with Don Da Don Cat next to him. He laughed and I quickly paid my respects to him and his wife and took off.
I kinda feel bad that I played Axer-321 earlier in the night...but I don't think anyone noticed. Its too good of a track to NOT hear twice in a night.
I am now even more a fan of Prog thanks to Hernan.

I forgot to mention that the crowd last night was fkn sick! It was a much more friendly crowd than the one @ Ferry. No pushing nor shoving no annoying dickheads except for the few that Dave mentioned in front of the dj booth with their hands blocking the view. All in all it was a great fkn night.

Zeon stole the long review I usually write. I pass the title of TA scribe on.
I showed up early around 10:30 so as to be sure to buy Packer his birthday drink, after taking a whole bunch of medicine & feeling lousy. Thanks Zild, for telling me I looked as bad as I felt. Never saw you James, though I looked. I was near the back by the speakers for most of the night.
Music--A. The best of Hernan's set was around 2- 3 AM, after the lights came on.
Crowd--I never thought I'd say an Austin show was too crowded, but it was too crowded. Way too bouncy, way too eager to start kicking, way too eager to do dance moves like the "Midriff Grab", the "Neck Clamp", followed by the "Head butt", & a follow-up of "the cheek bite".
Overall- GREAT. After Miami & it's $45 covers & $15 drinks, Sky's $12 cover & $3 red bull & Vodka is a BARGAIN.

what can i say that hasnt already been said about the crowd and the night. Awesome set by Hernan. He bombed Austin and left no survivors. I think I had one too many red bull vodkas cause I was super happy through most of the night and cant remember if I made out with whats her name??? Nevertheless great seeing the crew and till the next event in Austin (Lostep on wednesday)

I apologize, Edie, I was just wondering if you were OK. And I'm seriously lacking in social skills.

He's right. He once punched a nun in the gut because she said her stomach hurt.

You should see Lucky Number Slevin. Pretty good movie. (& they use a line similar to that)

It was definitely a fun night. Wish I could ID alot of the tracks Hernan was dropping. Hernan also called Jojo and said the Austin gig was his favorite, best crowd etc. The south americans doing the soccer chant to the beat was unexpected but interesting in a good way. I might have to check out their party scene someday in my lifetime.

It was yet another "Hey you opened for Ferry Corsten didn't ya!!" girls. I'll be friendly with em but not interested in hookin up. Just don't need the drama that would (and has) resulted from groupie girls.

Now...if she wouldn't have brought up the whole "hey your DJ Matthias!" bit and was attracted to me for who I am personality wise, rather than who I opened for...that'd be different.
Posted by Zeonfiend on Apr-15-2006 11:45:
Just occurred to me that not a single picture has manifested itself from this gig. Creepy-weird is in effect.

i got about 90 pics from the event. would post them but dont know how. call me stupid but i just bought a digi cam so some advice would be nice

Photobucket is about the easiest way; it's also free. Just upload them, then post the IMG version.
