Anyway this thread is pointless, there is nothing to discuss. Paul Van Dyk makes music (and he earns money because he's good in it, he helps his genre to evolve) and for as far as I know dj Sammy, he's a guy who makes money (and he makes music to achieve this, and he doesn't bother about creating something new if he can make more money with a dance remake of older songs).

The only reason his name is known is because of his huge sales in North America and in Canada which is really sad because theres more talent artist who are hoping to do this well

d00d, it sickens me too. almost as bad as 50cent or stupid rap shit.

most people who live in north america are sheep listening to whatever mtv tells them

DJ Sammy just more Pop based music, stuff that the masses will listen to. All those 10 year old girls who are into Britney Spears and J-Lo are never going to pop in a PVD mix, needless to say many of them have never even heard PVD's name or do they know what Trance music is. A lot of people still think that all EDM music is "dance". It's kind of annoying.

No man. Unless you are actually into EDM or something close to it you probably haven't. The good majority of the people i talk to don't know who he is. And your're right, he is all over Limewire..but that doesn't mean that ppl will download/buy his stuff. And let me add that i live in Canada so the EDM scene isn't as big here as it is in Europe.

^^i saw an interview with PVD on basic cable last week. 'time of our lives' was played all the time on MTV when it came out. random people not knowing about PVD doesn't equate to him being underground, rather it equates to the general public being ignorant. herbie hancock isn't underground, and most people on the street wouldn't know who he is either. you probably don't. hell, you go asking questions randomly on an american street, and half the people wouldn't even know who George Washington is, much less PVD.

no, simply being there does not qualify him as a 'pioneer'. he was just a dj and a bad producer. he didn't start any clubs or labels and he didn't come up with any new ideas for the genre. he worked with a pioneer, but that pioneer became disgusted with him and left their project. pvd's a moocher and an opportunist, he only ever cared about trance music insofar as it could put money in his pocket. you think he's underground? he hasn't been underground since 1998, and before that he wasn't underground, just unknown. like DJ sammy, i suppose.

Paul's technical skills have improved tremedously over the years, as have the technical values of his productions.
PVD does care about his fans - A couple of years back while most big DJs like Sasha, Oakie, and Tiesto didn't care that their rates kept rising especially in NYC, Paul deliberately tried to keep admission prices at around $30. Paul, like Sasha, has also played at benefit events after several disasters.
PVD has always been very supportive of Trance artists from his native country of Germany, even those not signed or have anything to do with his label. Even when most DJs favored the hot producers of the month from the UK or Holland, PVD always tried to find enough decent material to support from Germany.
Paul didn't start any label in the early 90s, instead he got screwed by one - MFS. He also could have easily evolved into more of a Progressive DJ in 2000 when many of his peers like Sasha, Digweed, and Oakenfold abandoned Trance (Oakie started playing it again a year and a half later), or a couple of years prior to that in Germany with Sven Vath and Timo Maas.
Paul Van Dyk has a weekly show in Berlin on Radio Fritz, and if i'm not mistaken he doesn't get paid for it, similar to Armin's situation when he was on ID&T Radio.

You hinted at Cosmic Baby, a great producer, but where is he nowdays? Or where are guys like DJ Keoki who used to be so big in the mid 90s while Paul's name was rising?
What happed in 98? Paul got a residency at Gatecrasher? Does that mean he automatically lost his underground credibility?

Face it - Paul Van Dyk, like Sasha or Oakie has remained one of the few constants of this scene. He's hung in there, remaining true to himself, and to the music he loves. He's always kept an open mind and played other types of EDM, but for the most part PVD is about Trance.

Posted by all-nite-freak on Feb-27-2006 00:21:

and to anyone trying to say PVD is a pioneer...go back to school...
even dj's who dont spin much trance anymore like Sven Vath were producing and spinning Trance before PVD played his first gig.

If Sammy was compared to a sexual position...he would be the raped in the ass in prison position. His music is so bad thats how i feel when i hear it.

anyone who mentions oakie is clueless.
anyone can be an anthem dj...
for christ sake he is playing the world is mine.

Posted by CHRles on Feb-27-2006 01:29:

Sven started spinning Trance about a year or two before Paul did if I'm not mistaken, that's all. Sven's first productions were way before Paul's but they were definitely not Trance - he had a Pop hit in Germany during the late 80s with the members of Snap (remember them?).

Maybe Talla 2XLC preceded both by a few years, but most DJs that helped pioneer the Trance sound did so around the same time as PVD.

hi, paul!

Posted by all-nite-freak on Feb-27-2006 01:37:

im not trying to state that Sven is the pioneer either...
Just trying do disprove that PVD showed up one day and all of a sudden invented Trance.I read comments on this forum that lead me to believe that some actually think this way.First time i saw sven was in 96 and his version of Trance trumps anything PVD has ever done IMO.

Posted by CHRles on Feb-27-2006 01:44:

You're right that PVD didn't invent Trance, and it's cool to see there are members here, like you, that didn't start listening to this genre yesterday.
Sven Vath's style of Trance was very unpredictable. Sometimes he'd play entire songs without mixing them into each other, not even fading one into the other. Then again, this was at a time when many Trance records had these beat-less 3 minute intros (sort of like today's big 2-3 minute Breakdowns in the middle of the tunes).
Also, as much as people dismiss how fast Trance is, and that all PVD plays is 140 BPM records, Sven would oftentimes play records at 150 Beats Per minute (which was much more the norm back in the mid 90s).

It's a shame guys like Sven left the scene. I tried many times getting into his post-98 releases, and while some of them were interesting none of them seemed to have the kinda magic that used to be associated with his labels sound.

Sven was a madman, live you would never know what to expect.I could only describe it as audio mindfucking. He has left Trance but even today i find his sets are amazing and simply different than the cookie cutter formulaic mixing that every dj seems to be a fan of.

The problem with Trance is that it all follows the Ferry Formula these days and honestly its no fun to dance to music that has an extra long breakdown.Unless you have popped 65 hits of e dancing to this simply cannot be done. This formula and the total unoriginality of anything that has been released in the past 2 years have made me simply almost stop attending trance events as well as listening to it as much as i used to.

Oakie was good once upon a time but now is nothing more than a radio dj popping hit after hit and genre jumping during every single one of his live sets. The World is Mine is a song played by resident dj's, not supposed innovators.

Posted by CHRles on Feb-27-2006 02:40:

I don't think Oakenfold seem himself as an innovator anymore. He more then likely got burnt out on the idea of finding the newest tunes and playing in random cities everynight.
You'd be surprised who's played "The World Is Mine" - pretty much everyone from Tiesto to Morillo. David Guetta is a hot name with both DJs and the mainstream.
