Sucks that Canada didn't make it to round 2. Oh well.

Since when did Chan Ho Park become a closer? (I don't pay attention to baseball much)

He's not. The Korean team is just using him that way. San Diego might have to think of doing it too since he's doing so well in that role.

Chan Ho as a closer seems like the best bet... guy has never been the same since he left LA.... I say let him throw heat for an inning instead of getting him knocked around for 4 or 5 innings...

Why not Eric Gagne was considered a piece of crap as a starter. Boom, he becomes one of the most dominant closers overnight. Chan Ho Park has good stuff for that role...

How exactly is the second round being played? Is it another set of groups?

He wasn't exactly a "crap" starter. He was real good in the minor leagues.

I've listened to Jim Rome on the radio for a long time and he used to always call him a piece of crap before he became a closer. That's where I got it from actually. Romey is in LA. You would have to know Romey to get that. My apologies.

He sucked as a starter in the bigs. The year before he converted he pitched 152 innings with an ERA of 4.75 in cavernous Dodger stadium. ERA of 5.15 the year before. He becomes a closer and saves 52 with an ERA of 1.97. He had 16 less K's in 70 less innings once he became a closer.

I hate Jim Rome.

As for Gagne, I bet, if given more chances, he'd be solid as a starter. He was REALLLLLLLY good in the minors. And his peripherals were getting better as a starter in the majors before being converted.

Gagne as a starter... I would compare him to a Corey Lidle... or a Bronson Arroyo... sucky 3rd or 4th starter... so... a sucky starting pitcher... but was lights out best closer in baseball for the past few years... no doubt...

But I think Chan Ho is paid too much to be a closer... he's overpaid to begin with, because of that good year he had before free agency years ago... who knows... I hope he's a closer, so he has at least SOME fantasy value!!!

There are two pools... Pool 1 and Pool 2
Pool 1: USA, Mexico, Korea, Japan
Pool 2: Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela

Each team in each pool play each other once... so three games, top two teams advance to the next round

Top two teams in each pool play each other in the WBC semi-finals... so the final will be one team from Pool 1 and one team from Pool 2...

Park has been shitty. So why not try him as a set-up to Hoffman now that Otsuka is gone? Sure, he's paid a lot. But might as well try and get something out of him if you're the Padres.

Let's keep in mind Park was pitching against teams like China...semi-pro guys. Japan is solid but not that imposing. I mean that Canada guy from single A shut down the U.S. team. He's been impressive but I just want to keep it in perspective, especially it's spring training for a lot of guys.

Nuke Laloosh could be good in the minor leagues and lick my left noot in the bigs. How many hot prospects sucked when they eventually came up to the show?

How many hot prospects are overrated? More than you think. It's all this "toolsy" shit that overrates them. That's why when I look at minor leaguers, I mainly look at the peripheral stats. Go by the usual stuff and you're bound to be disappointed.

Posted by MeLLyMeL on Mar-14-2006 06:31:

what a bad f'kin day in WBC

not ONE of my 3 countries won. Cuba.. P.R... or US

Posted by partyhopper on Mar-14-2006 06:52:

Must wins coming up for each of the teams in Pool 2
Either Dominican Republic or Venezuela will not advance

Korea beat USA, 7-3 to remain undefeated
Their pitching staff has an ERA of around 1.00 for the whole WBC, and the defense has not committed an error yet.
Puerto Rico had a similar ERA before the loss to Venezuela
USA will have the fortune of seeing what the other teams do, then will know what they need to do to advance

Posted by partyhopper on Mar-15-2006 03:29:

Dominican Republic is the first team to move into the final four, with a 2-1 win over Venezuela, holding them to 1 hit

Japan beats Mexico 6-1, which doesn't help the cause for the USA
For USA to advance, they'll need to beat Mexico, and a win by Korea over Japan
They could still advance if Japan wins, but Japan will need to either score at least 8 runs or give up at least 7 runs, or something like that.

Posted by Shamez214 on Mar-15-2006 04:17:

I think, in the long run, the best thing for the WBC would be for the USA to be eliminated.

Posted by King Ecnal on Mar-15-2006 06:31:

lol... I agree... this USA BS is killing me...

AROD should be single handily winning these games for this team.... killing me...

Posted by partyhopper on Mar-16-2006 04:19:

Cuba advances to the semis, with another 1-run deciding game, in a 4-3 win over Puerto Rico, avenging their earlier loss to PR

Posted by partyhopper on Mar-16-2006 06:01:

Just like in the 2002 soccer World Cup, Korea bails out USA, with a 2-1 win over Japan
Now USA has to do its business and beat Mexico

Posted by Yohan on Mar-16-2006 17:13:

There is much rejoicing in Korea whenever a national team beats japan in anything.

Posted by venomX on Mar-16-2006 22:59:

GO DR!, man were so winning this thing

Posted by Shamez214 on Mar-17-2006 04:13:

Yay! Japan made it in. Go Japan and Cuba!
