-- markus schulz....how to describe his style

Markus schulz GDJB= Proggressive Trance....chill....130-135 BPM

Markus Schulz Live gigs= Techy progressive trance....more bangin....135-140 BPM

Armin usually plays 135-145 BPM.....so you can see how some songs do cross over to both Armin and Markus sets. IMO Armin is now slowing his BPMs way down, and stepping into Markus area. When you hear Armin playing at 128-135....thats when people bitch. His Space Miami WMC set was about 2 hours of under 135 bpm.

Markus Schulz only gets negative comments because of all the DJs copying his style now. Just look at ISOS LA playlist and it looks like it could be a GDJB set. The thing is, I feel that Markus has been doing this style of trance longer than anyone, and is able to play it better than anyone. That is my opnion. I have heard Markus drop more over the top trance tunes like False Light, Walk Down (Hard Dub), Breathing- Rank 1....etc in his sets, and it works. While other DJs are not able to make it sound like it fits in with the prog trance flow.

Whether you like Prog Trance or not, you have to give Markus credit for pioneering a new sound.

Oh, and I freakin love those basslines!!!!!

i'll say is like a deep melodic progressive trance....

Markus and Armin's Track list are somethimes the same... but they are totaly different.

Markus is also a great Producer IMO! but that is my O.

Clovis- Like you do not Dj Worship

A slight contradiction here

I like Markus' style, although there are other djs who play kind of similar and add a little more variation to their sets and are therefore better imo, but he is still a good dj.

I've seen him live twice, the first time he warmed up for Armin and his set was awesome, the second time he played a three hour set and it was nowhere near the same standard. But he's still in my top 5

Coldharbour Sound... That's it. One of my faves!

However ive seen him live a few times doing shorter 1 hour to 2 hour sets and he brings out the much more chunkier, techier and clubby tunes from his box. I can assure you its very dancable and the stuf he plays is a perfect warm up for any trance DJ be it a harder techy DJ or an uplfiting one.

I love ignorance.

Wow...Looks like people are really polorized when it comes to Markus Schulz. There's no in between.

I guess you could call it melodic/prog trance.

Markus is the man live...Its kinda hard to judge him because seeing him LIve doesnt even compare to listening to one of his CDs...I remember he blew the roof off in NYC, Club Spirit

i don't love him or hate him... i was going to see him a few months ago but i was sick and ended up staying home instead, and the last time i had seen him live before that was a year and a half ago and it was a great show (he opened up for Armin). i still listen to some of his older GDJB sets and livesets, but i don't really make it a point to listen to them all that often anymore. sometimes that Coldharbour sound really fits my mood, but i'd get sick of it really quick if i listened to a lot of his stuff.

i guess my biggest complaint is that i thought Without You Near was a terrible artist album... but that might just be my personal preference.

LOL... you just reminded me of what I said to Andy when he told me he was listening to that before coming out on Saturday...

Markus to me = McProg, which is good if you're in the mood for it, but it isn't going to satisfy you if you're looking Prime Rib.

Markus didn't pioneer anything, he basically took a good sound others were making and made it cheap.

As opposed to, you know, DJs who don't play live.

Some don't play live........that simple....

Also, some are horrid Live DJs, but can put together great CD Compilations or Pre recorded Radio Shows...

To stay on topic, he is definitely Progressive Trance

What do they do when they don't play live? What does it look like?

I'm fascinated by what your answer's going to be.

Preprogram a set in either Ableton, Mixmeister, or some other random program that can be used to do the vast majority of work for you after you've set your "markers" in a timeline.

Technically that wouldn't be playing live, and people don't seem to have a problem calling people who use PC's "DJ's."

Posted by all-nite-freak on Apr-04-2006 17:11:

unless he was referring to dj's who do live PA acts i am also interested in what is sure to be a hilarious answer.

Floorfiller is so right about Schultz...he is so cookie cutter, why else do you think Armin is so high on him.

In other words, you consider this the electronic music equivalent of lip synching. heh.

I won't argue that (although I could), but it bemuses me to think that you people can actually tell what the hell he's doing up there behind the decks anyway. Like you would know if he's mixing the music "live" or not. Unless you're standing behind him and can see everything, he could push 'samba' on a casio keyboard and fake the rest and no one in the club could tell the difference.

And even so, if the music is pre-mixed and pre-recorded already and all he has to do is push "play", so to speak, then it stands to reason that it BETTER be far superior to anything he can do do live ("on-the-fly") since he has all that time to prepare and craft the perfect set at home.

And if that's the case, then that sparks another quandary: WHICH DJs are actually better live than they are if they play their own pre-recorded performances? Who is so inept at pre-programming his own flawless sets that doing things manually in person--flaws and all--is actually better?

Well, according to some arguments in this thread, that man is Markus Schulz. He's just a cyclone when he DJs live. Someone better not let him near vinyl next, he'll mop up the DMCs.

As long as I can see the mixer, I can tell if its live or not.

no DJ plays live... they are simply DJ'ing..
a liveshow is when they play on synths for example... like many psy acts do

live is such an overrated word

Psy music isn't "live". Almost all of it is still automatic. Live music is getting a band on stage and playing all the notes and instruments- not having a computer loop most of it for you.

I was talking abotu DJ's who put out "sets" that were just made using sequencer programs, don't have "real" decks, and don't actually play out live.

There's plenty of them.

Name me one.

(a BIG name, not some bedroom kid trying to DJ Mystik himself to infamy)

what do you mean?
I was just giving an example that psy acts perform live, also Flash Brothers are live acts aswell as DJs, ... they play on synths on stage

They play their own stuff though. They aren't DJs, and they aren't a live act. I hear that Juno Reactor actually get a band together and bash it out when they play live. That's the only live goa/psy I've heard of.

ummm Infected Mushroom?
