almost 100% of deejays prefer either vinyl or cd, but almost 100% of listeners (who are not deejays) prefer digital downloads. so basicly atm majority prefers mp3s. add that to the fact that pressing vinyl (or cd) costs a hell lot more, so it's pretty natural that the progress is towards mp3.

oh and if we are thinking in the perspective of labels, what about this fact: 300 sold mp3s brings the label about the same profit as 1000 vinyls, with almost no risk at all.

Well...Vinyl is the BEST.

but in the near future the mp3 will be everywhere!!!

Hi All,

I am very interested in knowing which medium is the Publics choice?

I personally love vinyl, for the feel and the sound. I enjoy mixing on turntables a lot more than CD Players but i am constantly using CDJ's for all my pre release material, I also download mp3's but would prefer the physical product...

I know this question has been asked before but now with downloads fully established I would like to hear peoples feedback...

Thanks in advance

Brisky

I think your assumptions could refer to the majority of people here too.

Given a lottery win, or a nice paying job, most fans and respective bedroom DJs would play using vinyl.

However even vinyl DJs have had to adapt to dropping occassional CDr's and in some cases, move completely to digital format because of how tunes are given/provided to them.

While that affects the professional more than the punter, the weak-minded of the latter will follow the trend of the former to become more digitally aware of technology available to them.

Even if you consider legally obtaining mp3 format music, its still a lot cheaper and more efficient than vinyl. It may sound too clear, too crisp and frankly as cold as the underside of a penguin - but its the old argument ease & availability vs. quality.

A quality which apart from the real enthusiasts is very undiscernable to the clubber.

Some good points have been made about the cost of hardware as well as the actual vinyl. OK so if you're getting Pioneers to spin CD's on you still going to pay out a lot of money, but there is still the opportunity to play your WAV or MP3 format music on your PC or in some DJ software.

A vinyl only has 1 piece of hardware that it can be played back on. Even this equipment is heavy, cumbersome and in 21st century looking terribly dated.

I used to be 100% for vinyl. But since moving to Eastern Europe i had no opportunity to either buy new records or play my existing collection. I only keep up with the scene these days in mp3 format, with a dream at the end of a long tunnel to afford a CD set-up... for now being a laptop DJ will have to do.

My 2c.

I'm hoping Brisky's announcement involves a re-designing of the digital section of chemical website.
Although it could also be something akin to 3 Beat Records, who went down the digital path last year. I am always amazed at the quality releases on 3beat before any other digital store...

Just like nothing beats buying an authentic movie reel and setting it up on your projector while Mom plays the piano to accompany it.

The rest of us however would just buy the DVD and be done with it.

ahahahaha... that's the best post I've read all year on TA.

Nope. Although I did miss out reel to reel, which is surprising as I have one sat right here.

Let me demonstrate a very extreme but nonetheless functioning example.

I can buy 1 track from beatport for $1.49 and disseminate it through the internet resulting in at least 1,000,000+ copies.

Or 1,000,000 people can buy 1,000,000 vinyls of the same track at $7.99 a piece (quite a low price which doesn't even factor in shipping).

Here's the end result: 1,000,000 tracks in people's hands for $1.49
or 1,000,000 tracks in people's hands for $7,990,000.

This is why your example of Somatic Sense is flawed.

And people will rip vinyls to MP3 and dstribute it through the intenet anyway, so really theres not much difference.

(I know this wasn't your point in this post anyway but.....) When talking about vinyl you also need to factor in manufacturing and distribution costs, which are (more or less) non existant with MP3. So 1.49 for one MP3 is effectively all profit, whereas 7.99 is reduced markedly by costs before profit can be counted.

Buying and playing vinyl doesn't make you "old school" nor does it make you cool. It simply demonstrates that much like your parents lamenting the demise of a time or item gone by, that you are stuck in the past.

Like it was said before, sound is sound, vinyl is not necessarily a "warmer" sound (due to analog) as many would like to claim. It the same sound on different forms of media - anything that you would like to claim otherwise is a minor form of delusion to convince yourself otherwise. Those dinosaurs who are stigmatizing Ableton, CD's and MP3's hurt the evolution of music by insisting that a 95 year old technology is "better" than a 5 year old technology.

I still have crates of vinyl at home and have no problems buying and playing vinyl - but lets face it: CD's and Mp3's are not only more portable, cheaper and replaceable (burning a track on a new CD when it cracks or gets scratched) but they are also much more versatile (Final Scratch, Ableton, etc.).

Vinyl is a 95 year old technology. Time to embrace the future.

correct in some parts.

However you are telling people to forget vinyl and buy CD/MP3 etc. This is a self-fulfilling prophecy, ofcourse vinyl will stop if people stop playing it. But if people keep playing it it will last longer.

Yes there is no doubt digital formats are the way of the future, but in the meantime let us have our fun.
