The food is similar at resorts but I do think that the star rating makes a difference when it comes to facilities and overall presentation.

We stayed at the Gran Caribe Barlovento (3.5*) and it was alright but after traveling around Veradero, we saw some hotels that were much nicer and newer.
What made things really interesting was that we were able to "crash the party" at Villa Cuba because they had the same wrist bands as us. The two hotels are owned by the same company but the half star difference in rating really shows!
Better pools, better entertainment and definately better food selection at the buffet.

The only thing I liked about Barlovento is that it wasn't too crowded so no struggle to find lounge chairs.. and the amazing donuts they had for breakfast
Also, I have to add the the rooms were very clean. I left little gifts for the maids and they always did a great job.

i was there and i didnt like it. not the hotel cause i really dont care how many stars/where is it as long as i have a bed. whole varadero experience kinda dissapointed me caue all those things that i could to there i can do here. and mosquitos......

i went to havana and santa maria olso, and it was good but it wasnt excelent.

if you wanna have loads of fun cheap, go to holguin, club amigo.

im never going anywhere else on my vacation but there. avesome people, good food, nice beaches.... there's a bar on the beach that work till 2-3 am every night, and they sell bottle of rum for 5 pesos

oh yeah good point! we did that too and we didnt even have any bracelets, our resort was too small so they didn't bother

we went to Playa Cayo Coco and another hotel for a dinner, noone even bothered checking!

so this is like another reason to not bother with paying like a grand

i went to a 3.5* resort. villa real.

had pool bar, total of 4 pools, 3 bars, food to get at night when coming back from the club. 1 pizzeria and 1 other restuarant and a show or activity at night in the lobby and throughout the day.

i paid $1100 out the door and this is the week after march break.

food was crap but i was always eating. seafood i stayed away from except for the lobster and a fish fillet which were good. lobster lacked in spice though. if you go and complain about how bad the food is, you won't like it as much. but if you go and say to your self, this is what i got for the week and i'm going to eat until i'm full then you'll love it.

^^
haha, that reminds me of seeing people at the dining tables with their own bottles of ketchup and other condiments

i think castro banned it in 2005 to piss off bush. Before that US currency was the currency of choice

Posted by malek on May-19-2006 05:55:

not only that, but its easier for castro to control the underground economy.

the convertible cuban peso (CUC) is worthless outside of cuba, being caught with US currency is good for jail, and when a cuban have some CUC, all he can get in return is regular cuban money, worthless too.

the govt gets to keep all the strong currencies.

oh and the people working there are halarious.

I think I read about that, it's the hotels bar right? so drinks for us would be free?

Posted by King Luis on May-19-2006 11:49:

correct. they also go food there too (hamburgers, hotdogs and some other stuff probably)
oh, bring a radio if you could with lots of batteries cause batteries there are hard to find and expensive. so you can listen to music on the beach.

we brought a radio and my friend plugged it into the wall the wrong way and basically broke the radio. so we tossed it off the top of the hotel (its basically the 7th floor)

here's some pics:

you can see the major parts but all the little stuff is scattered. oh we had so much fun.

Posted by evil_cookie on May-19-2006 12:10:

^^ LOL awesome.

any other things I should know about this resort? I want to try to call/email the resort and book 2 rooms with a good view...any suggestions as to which building I should be looking at?

Posted by King Luis on May-19-2006 12:23:

if i were to do it again, i think its building number 1.
try and get a room on the ground floor facing the pool bar and pool. you'll have people walking around during the day, but no stairs, 2 very close bars, entertainment during the day and short walk to the entrance. pool bar also has accessiblity for people who aren't in the pool.
i was in building 1 but on the 3rd floor facing another room kinda.
i'll see if i can draw a diagram: (ignore the dots/periods)

main lobby with bar is around here
........__
......./_ |
____/ ||
........|| <-path way.
........||
rooms... (try and get the second or third room in)
.......|--|--|--|--|--|--|--|

-----------------/--
pool is here.......|..pool bar here
......................|___________
