Posted by eRRaTiK on Jun-12-2006 08:23:

you homOs suggesting that he change his music tastes gotta stop being pu$$ies.

tell the b*tch to recognise or no buttseckz for her!

Start off with some cheesy house (MOS) - remixed oldies galore, and throw in some dj sammy, faithless, then hit her with some non-vocal piece of heaven i.e carte blanche, jose amnesia - the eternal, children or the like.

Posted by Allied Nations on Jun-12-2006 09:23:

I still think it's retarded to start her off with cheese.

It's quite retarded to try to convert her at all.

Just listen what you'd usually listen to and she may or may not get into it eventually. Don't push it.

If you build it, he will come

I didn't say say convert, because I don't think that can happen. People will always have their own unique taste. My suggestion is the same as yours, just have your music on and you're set. Hopefully you don't listen to cheese, I don't know your girlfreind, but any real music appreciater can usually hear cheese after a couple of tunes of a specific genre.

I listen to a lot of downtempo and funky eclectic stuff when i'm just hanging around So it's usually pretty easy for people to get into it- But that's just me.

Er... yes, I know - I was talking to the threadstarter, I only quoted you because I continued from it.

Yeah that's what I assumed, I was just continuing your train of thought I suppose- I was just clarifying my point of view a little bit.

Mooooooooving on.

You should take her to a big trance party or something. If she really cares about you she shouldn't have a problem with it. Maybe she gets to appreciate the genre like this.

Problem is, she's probably going to expect that you do the same for her and accompany her to some sort of oldies party.

I don't see why this is a problem. As a music lover I personally really enjoy being taken to and experiencing genres of music I wouldn't normally be aware of or pay any attention to. Like when I saw Motley Crue... Totally stupid 80's hair band that shoulda called it quits years ago, right? No fuck that, they played an awesome show and was something I'd never experienced before. Stepping out of your bubble is almost ALWAYS a good thing.

I was probably talking from own experience. Here in Belgium we have loads of 30+ parties, just a DJ that spins 70-80-90 tunes (not really from '60), and I really don't like those kind of parties. I'm not saying the music is bad, but it doesn't do much for me.

Retro nights! Hahaha! Fun to get wasted at and sing along to 'Summer of 69'.

By 60's music, I'm taking it to mean Motown, etc. If that's the case, I'd strongly advise not to give her any trance, because she just won't like it. There are a couple of things she might like though, and that aren't too much of a stretch. I wouldn't advise trying to change her musical tastes; instead, try expanding them by building on what she already likes. She likes Motown soul? Give her something from the Naked Music label. Bare Essentials Vol. 3 was one of my first EDM albums a couple years back, and the obvious jazz/soul influence is something that allows non-EDM fans a chance to connect to it as well. Kaskade's It's You, It's Me album is fantastic. Blue Six's album is also draws heavily upon an older jazz sound. Any Sounds of Om compilation is usually pretty good too.

Otherwise, you could delve into the whole trip-hop/jazz realm with something by Air or Zero 7, which I imagine she would probably like quite a bit. If she likes more poppy stuff, something like Sia Furler, Telepopmusik, or Imogen Heap/Frou Frou might hit the spot. Like someone else suggested, Madonna's new album isn't actually that bad. If she likes folk music likes James Taylor and stuff, try starting her off with Emiliana Torrini's new album. It's not very electronic, but her previous stuff is, so it could provide a pretty easy bridge to explore a little bit more stuff like Hooverphonic, Portishead, Everything But The Girl, Sneaker Pimps, etc. A long progression maybe, but I find that Trip-Hop balances House very nicely.

But if you insist on trance, keep the bpm's under control and stick with some pop song remixes. Don't just give her a set of all foreign songs. Give her something recognizable as a bridge to the more obscure tracks in a set. Something like No Doubt - It's My Life (Jacques Lu Cont Remix), The Killers - Mr. Brightside (Thin White Duke Remix), Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone (Jason Nevits Mix), etc. The more comfortable she is with the music, the more she will like it, so try and find something that builds off her current tastes. I wouldn't recommend ASOT... though Above and Beyond could work. Perhaps their end of the year Top 20 of 2005 mix (From This Thread) There was a lot of pretty decent stuff in that mix, and most tracks included a decent melody or vocal to latch onto as well.

Also, someone recommended that Danny Howells EM from 2002. Pure gold, and includes a couple oldies such as Kool and the Gang and Prince, as well as some modern trip-hop and house-related tunes.

Good luck, and happy hunting!

Thank you kind sir.

And I agree with your previous post 100%. The entire reason I peruse this forum is to pick up suggestions on new genres. At the beginning of the year I finally picked up my first Masiello liveset after reading so much about him, and my god, his style is amazing. I've really dove into house since then, something I probably wouldn't have done without the suggestions. Some of my favorite albums/tracks/livesets have been the first I've heard from an artist I'd never heard of before listening. Hooverphonic - Battersea was one of my first Trip-Hop tracks, and now I own three albums. Same with Massive Attack - Protection. Trying new music out is my life.

I'm not really sure that two people liking the same type of music qualifies as an "exact replica of himself/herself."

Speaking from personal experience, if music is your passion it's great to be able to share it with the one you love.
This is even better when you share the same passion for the same type of music. My gf and i are always talking about djs, tracks or sets, and we have fun doing so. We get all excicted when theres one of our favorite DJs playing in town. We talk about our old clubbin experiences and how fun they were. I burn her CDs which she loves and it makes me happy that she loves them...and it can keep getting cornier but you get the point.
