KarateKid

Yeah... what happened

Posted by spinswax on Jul-19-2006 03:34:

My run down.............

I had a wicked time Naz was kind enough to escort me so I had a peartner in crime to party with which was awesome!!! We arrived at Atlantis shortly after 9:30 and it was already busy but in a very weird way. They had the booth set up on the weat wall where they used to have the bball hoop when the clubs was Marrs and they had that kicking hip hop thursday - wow am I antiquated or what??? Anyways.
People were sitting on the steps that separtated the front and the back of the bar/lounge. No one on the dancefloor - I felt like I was back at Friday morning assembly in high school.
I decided screw it I am having a good time and the "i'm too cool to do anything poser crew" can stay where they are. The night just got better and better - Tazix played stuff I hadn't heard in a long time - Ilo "rapture" to name one - but it was nostaglic in a good way. Made me reminisce to the good old days lol!!!!
KT was magic. His hair was not. (IMO) I was able to shake his hand and thank him for coming - he threw down quality really danceable funky techy goodness. AND AT A DECENT SPEED!!!! I was in heaven. His mixing for the most part was really solid, he is a good programmer and actually entertaining to watch. He totally exceeded any expectations I had of him.
Then my Oakie came on............for those of you who know me - you know I am slightly Oakenfold obsessed. It is sad yes, but I am open about it. After seeing him play at least 7 times I have gathered this much about him - never go expecting him to be brilliant - go and expect good music. He was on last night more than I have seen him in a long time. Ture KT's set was technically better but it is really like comparing apples and oranges - both fruit but totally different. Oakie was engaged - not the coked up deer in the headlights man I saw at Crave - but the funny, charming passionate one I met during the Bukka tour. OH MY GOD THE HAIR!!!! It made me think of that sunsilk commercial - You know - BLUE FOR POOFY HAIR
Hair jokes aside he played better than I expected - opened with something that knocked the breath out of me. Yeah yeah he played "faster kill" which I actually love and Southern Sun - which I abhor. And then it was done............at 1:30pm. No encore, nothing - really weird.
I would have liked to know wtf happenned but lord knows.
Thank you to twisted/cargo - I really thought you guys did a supurb job - I love Atlantis. Why doesn't it get used more? It is an amazing venue.

- Mirk

It's the reasons stated in that post on CV that I will not support a Cargo show. Mirka, be fortunate that you got in and was able to listen to any sort of music. And please don't say that everyone should 'learn' that this is how Vancouver works and to get down early. Unless the ticket clearly says that you won't get in past a certain time and that your paid ticket is void, then as a consumer, buying a ticket means guaranteed entry, regardless of when I wanted to go. I'm not even commenting on how well Kenneth Thomas or Paul Oakenfold played but givin the organization of the event, that it was shut down early due to being oversold and at the same time people with paid tickets not getting in, I don't understand why people are still praising this as a success. There's a bigger picture to consider for our scene cannot continually put on shows that turn out this way and think it can survive because I know a few people who will never come out to a show again because of this said experience.

i guess no surprise there
we all remember the oversold twisted parties back in the day

im rather happy i decided not to go

Ouch !! Harsh words Naz. But is it just the hair, or lack thereof?

***************************
I know your opinions about Armin, so I won't rehash them here. Based on the reports about the Cargo show getting shut down early, that's really unfortunate especially for the people who forked over their money expecting a solid packed evening of music, only to walk away disappointed. In contrast, the Armin Only shows I attended in New York did not run into such problems & I can definitely say I got my money's worth; 2-day pass=$61 u.s. for 13 hours worth of music. (granted they weren't perfect, but someone in a different topic correctly pointed out there probably is no such thing as a "Perfect Show")

It's unreal what's happening in this city.
Greedy whore promoters & anti-nightlife by-laws.

I'm glad I had my clubbing/raving fix back east
cause this is shit .. absolute shit.

All I can say is lol

About the show, the acts, the music, and especially the hair

Posted by jussed on Jul-20-2006 15:12:

I guess Kraig and the team are still working on a proper response but seeing as there sees to be zero outrage or even concern on TA, I guess it doesn't matter.

Seriously ppl, just bend over and take it and not hold promoters responsible for poor business practices. Nothing's going to change!

Posted by apri_peel on Jul-20-2006 23:58:

no outrage on TA cause we didnt go
and we're selfish, so we werent affected, we wont bitch

i still thing that was retarded
i'll definately be thinking twice next time i go to a cargo event
even a little worried about twisted parties
yes i realize they are not all same people running the two
but essentially it is, just different names attached to them

somebody call the better business bureau

and that's exactly the attitude in this town seems like.
Just put up with whatever it is and shut the hell up and
be happy you get anything!

oh and .. don't offer any conflicting opinions or bother
raising awareness of these issues or someone will put you
back in "place" and ask you to STFU!

That's right people, just STFU and PAY $60 for shows on
a monday night that last 2 hours ..

I'm pissed .. and I didn't even go ..

A Boycott would partialy solve the issue, but then .. it'd have
to be a team event in a city full of cliques, so forget that
idea. Getting 5 people on the same page is challange enough ..

All in all I'm glad I didn't go (although I'm not into Oakey at all) but Kenneth can come back anytime on his own and headline *nudge*!

as i said in our previous discussion, andrew, i have nothing against azim, or you, or kraig. i am simply concerned with how things are run and are being handled. i have no problem with you in particular
