cosmic is right. drag and speed is definately a factor in mpg and its DIFFERENT for every car. its not the same for each car.... since each car has different drag coefficients and engines.
low rpm isnt always better either(depending on engine). something like an ls1 (camaro..older vette). can chug along at 1500 rpm and it pulls off its best mileage there on the highway... while something like a civic would get WORSE mileage cruising that low in the rpm range because its torque output is much less ..therefore you need to give it more gas (load) for it to keep that speed up. Where it could handle it much better at 3000 rpm and have enough torque (and hp)to keep moving forward and for you not to be in it so much.
rpms actually have less of an effect on gas consumption compared to load(howmuch you are pushing the gas). a car running at 13 vaccum and 4000 rpm will burn less gas compared to a car running at 2000 rpm but needing more load (less vaccuum)..say 8 .
gear ratios , tire size, unsprung weight etc..ALL play a role in gas consumption.
srt8 jeep rocks..
it cost me $49 to fill my car the other day(premium) and thatll get me about a week and ahalf (depending on how far i go)
ok, for the blind...

DigitalMP, I guess reading for the blind is not a volunteer activity well suited for you, because I don't see one place where I said that drag was the only factor. You were talking about engine speeds, and I said that what you said is only true if you are driving in a vacuum (i.e. discounting the force of drag). I was telling that you were forgetting about drag, not that drag was the only factor.
Edit: I see where you may have gotten confused: I said that drag was the number 1 factor, not the only one. Looking back, i think it's best to retract the "number 1" classification since I do not know that for sure.

So I guess the moral of this story is if you want to conserve gas...DRIVE FASTER!

I do my part. I've been pretty good. I drive quite often from TO to Mississauga along the QE at night, and tend to drive around 160km/h...Thankfully I haven't see any cops, but there's always one dude that wants to race me on the highway.
Highway racing isn't good, because your constantly accelerating, braking, accelarting, braking...which is hard on your fuel efficiency!

in my car (325is e30) i get my best fuel economy at 140km/h.
what euphorica said about gear ratios, unsprung weight, etc kinda shows how we are missing a lot of factors. even like oil viscosity, every temperature that effects the motor and drive train, psi in tires all play a factor.
imo, every vechicle has its own speed and gear where it obtains its best fuel economy. therefore that speed/drag chart is different for every car, motor and drain train.

cruising smoothly at 140 i'll be getting like 9.5l\100km
this is on a 1990 2.5litre 6cylinder motor that has 215,000km.
my rpms are around 3500 or so, i'll be able to hit 170km/h in 4th gear at redline.

I actually raced a Corvette on my Way to work this morning on the QEW in my X3. Here's the story.
I was on Miss. Rd. getting ready to go on the QEW, and this Corvette in front of me was going so damn slow, so I kinda got up on his ass to get him to go faster. He didn't like that and motioned me to pass him. So i went to, and he fucking sped up so I couldn't pass him. Bastard. So as soon as we got on the QE, we started racing.
Now I know that a Corvette could smoke me, but I still couldn't let him disrespect me like that. So I tried my best, and luckily there was a decent amount of traffic around 8:40ish this morning. So we were going like 160km going in and out of traffic. He was quite a ways a head of me, but I knew I could catch up and I did. He got stuck behind some fans and I went flying past him. As I was driving by him, he stuck his hands out the window and started clapping, but it was in a mocking kind of clap. He (probably a early 40s man) got passed by a 21-year old in a BMW 4x4 haha.
...oh, and I used quite a bit of gas doing that!
On not above. When I cruise at 130km/h I probably rev around 2500-2750 RPM, which ain't too bad.
