Aviva owns the following insurers.... General Accident, Canadian General, Traders General, GAN, Scottish and York, Elite, Pilot, Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan (I think that's it). They underwrite PC Insurance. Aviva is owned in whole by Norwich Union.

Most of the big insurers are owned by other big insurers. ING owns Halifax, Dominion of Canada, Allianz, Zurich (commercial lines), Belair Direct, Nordic, Royal & Sun Alliance and underwrites Meloch Monnex which underwrites TD Insurance.

Economical owns Economical Mutual, Waterloo Insurance, Perth Insurance, Federation, and Missisquoi.

Fairfax Financial owns Northbridge which owns Lombard Canada, Trafalger, Commenwelth, Federated, and Markel.

I'm sure I've forgotten some and Chemy will probably add to this later.

Hmmm...

Actually...Aviva Plc (parent company in UK) = Norwich Union

GA bought off CG and GAN, then NU bought them off so that mess (or merger...haha) became CGU = Aviva

Anyways..you're right, OIS is a brokerage...hmmm...and as you know Aviva recently bought off Pilot...

Which insurance company do you work for Moral? Maybe you can hook up me with the best quote...haha...

I'm working for the summer @ Pilot (comm. auto) and worked for finance/acct. @ Aviva... The insurance industry is interesting...but not my cup of tea

I don't work for an insurer, I'm with an independent adjusting firm.... the big one!

Sorry, I'm actually a good risk (clearly the underwriters at Pilot don't know me very well).

You don't count, your a Yankie! Our insurance laws are very different then yours. The minimum liability insurance here is $200,000, most people carry 1,000,000. If I recall correctly your minimum limit is $50,000. Additionally, Accident Benefits coverage (which is similar to your PIP coverage) is mandatory and infinately higher then your PIP coverage.... ($100,000 medical coverage, $72,000 for attendant care, $10,400 housekeeping coverage, and income replacement coverage of $400/wk.... these amounts go up to $1,000,000, 1,000,000, $100/wk for life, and $400/wk for the first two years and $2hundred something for life after the first two years for certain injuries). You really cannot compare prices from NY to ON as the policies/products are totally different. INSURANCE IS NOT A COMMODITY.

Unfortunately you can't compare BC to Ontario....two different systems and there are so many costs that the Government can spread out in other areas that insurance companies can't spread out here.

Yep, government insurance = lower premiums but higher costs (which get made up for by additional costs to license vehicles, higher fuel taxes, or higher taxes in general). But hey, the premiums are lower so all must be good, right?

I happen to thing that adjusters should be charged the highest rate of insurance due to our tendency to drive according to the Fault Determination Rules. If I'm not going to be at fault I take no steps to avoid collision.... that can't be the best course of action!

Posted by colonelcrisp on Aug-15-2006 18:53:

isnt it no fault insurance? and do you get to adjust your own claims? cause that would be awesome.....

No fault insurance isn't quite what the name would suggest. What no-fault insurance means is that each party involved claims their damages through their own insurer regardless of which party is at fault for the collision. Fault or negligence as it should be called does still exist. If I rear end you then I would be considered negligent as I have failed in my duty to leave sufficient space between our vehicles to prevent a collision should your speed reduce. You would claim your damages through your automobile insurer under a coverage called Direct Compensation (which is part of your liability coverage. I would claim my damages through Part 7 Collision coverage (if I have it). Essentially no fault means you cannot sue me for damage to your vehicle.

Legal action is only permissable in Ontario for income loss resultant from injuries that exceeds the coverage afforded to you under Accident benefits insurance (80% of your net weekly income up to a maximum of $400/wk for 104 weeks) or threshold injuries. Threshold injuries are injuries that meet the following verbal thresholds:
1) death
2) permenent and serious disfigurement
3) permenent and serious impairment of an important physical, mental or psychological function

I do not get to adjust my own claims, however, my employer has a service agreement with my insurer which results in a great deal of their claims being given to us for adjustment. I have had 5 claims since I started driving, all but one have been handled by co-workers of mine. It is awesome!

Moral....I'm glad you are answering these questions.....I am tired of answering the same questions over and over again.
