hey mike

simple question; how did you record the set? what software?

this is my reason to ask; im having one of my first sets this saturday, and i want to record it (so i can re-listen to what went right/wrong).

i use a laptop, 2 TT's, connected to my mixer, and from themixer, there will be a line-in into the laptop.

what software can i use best?
thnx for any answer/help

I use Sound Forge version 6.0 to record and normalize. The only drawback is that if you record over 4 hours then you need to save it into 2 or 3 smaller files depending on how long your set is (2 in my case.) There is a version 8 out now that is probably a lot better, but I haven't gotten round to updating yet. I would say try and get that.

And I use CDex to encode to mp3.

thnx for the help mikey!

how does it work exactly? does sound forge (i have that program happily) puts the sound into some format, which CDex then transports to mp3? i dont understand that quite. and do you have to (re-)configure your sound forge settings perhaps? is that easy?

cheers

I'm interested to know how to set it up this way too. Is there a topic in the archive that clearly answers these questions?

Help

Help

Once installed, it should automatically set itself up so that it can record whatever comes through your line in on your sound card. And to get the best sound quality, you will need to alter some settings, yes. I am feeling quite bored, so this is what you do:

Hit the record button.

This brings up the recording box, where you can set the sound levels (the green bars.)

Providing you've hooked everything up, if you stick a record on you will be able to see what levels these bars are at. Ideally you want it to be just clipping the VERY bottom of the red. Any more and you will get distortion. You can either turn up the master out on your mixer to change this, or you can change the recording volume on your sound card:

Control Panel -> Sounds & Audio Devices -> Volume Tab -> Advanced -> Options -> Properties -> Recording -> Ok

And then adjust the volume on the Line In.

After the sound levels are all good, just hit the record button on the same recording box (the red button, surprise surprise.) Once your done, and have pressed stop, the wav will be displayed on the screen. You can now do your editing, like clipping the beginning and the end - but most importantly to normalize your file which makes everything the max volume possible without distorting anything:

Process -> Normalize -> OK (Just use whatever default settings it gives.)

Then save your file. You have the option to save your file as an mp3 here if you want, but like I said, I prefer to use a seperate program for this as I am not all that convinced sound forge's is that good. So just save it as a WAV - this is the audio's raw format. The quality is immense, but obviously the file will be huge. So this is where CDex comes in. CDex will basically compress this raw audio into an mp3 format. Obviously the lower the bitrate you use, the more the quality will start to degrade.

Simple as that.

Thanks for the advice on the CDex. its funny that TheMaestro asked instead of me, cuz I just ran out of encodes on my trial version of Sound Forge and happened to be reading through this post. Now I can convert my mixes to MP3s again, sweeeeeeeet!

For recording, I use MAGIX Music studio.

Record for anything upto 12 hours - SOLID.

Audiocatalyst to encode.

Thumbs up

I just saw a link to this mix in your signature today.

The tracklist looks fucking mint, can't wait to download this when I get home from uni. I have to admit that I never expected to hear Miguel Migs, Blaze or Paul Johnson in one of your sets!

The last two tracks are great fun, Red Carpet and Milky always get me going

Comments to follow.

What would this mix have needed to have made that a 10 for you mate?

Hehe, I usually don't rate tracks/mixes with a full 10 unless I don't know any of the tracks and the mixing is flawless aswell as the atmosphere, i loved the atmosphere in this mix thats a given but i knew most of the tracks. I'm a rather odd critic, looking forward to hearing more

Great set, Mike

I thought the flow was a little bit strange in places, but overall it worked well.

Some of those tracks were phenomenal - the highlight for me was the Scissor Sisters remix.

Thanks for listening mate. I'm probably gonna be doing this again in the near distant future, so watch this space.
