its too bad that DJing is a buisness

sometimes its hard to be the good DJ & the good Buisness man at the same time

Posted by Nrg2Nfinit on Aug-25-2006 18:58:

id be a bit pissed if dj didnt play some of their tracks.. afterall some of the main reasons why i see djs is to hear htem play their stuff

GDMFSOB is sick though..

I would say Tiesto and G&D

There was a thread a while back about Gabriel & Dresdens tracklist being almost identical in two diffrent sets!

The point of that thread was like, one gig was in America and the other in UK and the tracklist was almos the same in relation of songs and the order of them.. talk about innovation..

i saw a recent pvd tracklist..and he's not only still playing TOOL but CRUSH too! good lordy!!!

Posted by beats and beeps on Aug-26-2006 09:44:

pvd stopped being good when he started playing his own productions

Same thing could be said about Richie Hawtin at times, yet you labelled him a whore in the first page.

Trentemoller dosen't always do a live PA by the way. You even have Damian Lazarus as a non whore, and you're right, i don't think he even has a released production out, but im sure he whores artists in his label so..

Posted by dj_kaleem on Aug-26-2006 11:00:

Tiesto, Armin...

Posted by Sinnica Hax on Aug-26-2006 11:14:

add steueueueueur too, but he's a mediocre DJ anyway so it wont matter

crosstown rebels shit is hot, so i couldn't blame him for whoring it ;p

but tbh i haven't heard any set where he played only/almost only stuff from his label

Posted by swisstoni_uk on Aug-26-2006 13:40:

djs will always whore their own tracks, they produce stuff they like so of course theyre going to spin them

eric prydz is partial to a bit of whoring :P

Posted by Dj Gracjan on Aug-26-2006 14:02:

MARCO V!!!!!! nobody is as bad as him
sometimes ferry corsten too

Posted by djsphere on Aug-26-2006 14:03:

it's normal for them to play the stuff they produce or sign cuz they like it and most of the people that attend let's say an avb gig expects to hear a live asot....simple

same thing with tiesto..he played lethal industry and traffic for the last years and stupid people who don't kno shit about EDM but liked the tracks keept him at the no 1 spot.

Yes that is true, but DJ's should focus as well on playing the best music available even though it might be against their own label at times.

It's probably what one of the guys already said, it's become just a business and DJ's no longer care about playing the best, but perhaps the best from their labels, totally forgetting about the rest of the music out there and therefore decreasing the quality of their sets.

What about those DJ's who rarely play their own tracks but they should? anyone like that out there?

Um... well ya...itn't it natural to play your own tracks at your own show!????

You would never see Metallica play a "smells like teen spirit" would ya???

People come to shows to see the the dj play.. and play his own tracks

I agree somewhat with the opinions already stated... but shouldn't the producer play his own stuff??

PEACE

Richie does not label himself as a live PA, at least by any flyer I've ever seen.

As for Lazarus, I agree with the guy above. He does play stuff off of his own label, but not nearly the percentage of other people I mentioned.

I wouldn't go to see Metallica if they were just playing a CD, mp3, whatever of a song that they created years ago, which is pretty much what you're saying. When they're playing live instruments, it's different than hitting play on the CD player. It's the same reason that the live PA people are being regarded differently than the DJs in this thread.

Posted by chimera66 on Aug-27-2006 00:47:

shameless self promotion; i think most of those at the top of the dj list whore themselves out at least a little bit pvd, tiesto, armin and ferry are all guilty

So I've been wondering what DJ's are oftenly known as playing to death their own productions perhaps leading to their much quicker fade out and also whoring the tunes from their own labels.

And what about those DJ's who do exactly the opposite, mainly being DJ's instead of producers and focus on playing the best music around regardless of labels/friendships, etc etc.

a good dj plays the sound and music he likes,

one would assume he makes tunes that define his sound, thus playing them out often defines his sound.

have you ever produced music? if i worked on a track for 3 weeks and was really proud of it i would play it out very often.

plus just because you get to listen to a new tiesto set every week and get bored of listening to similar tunes, this does not diminish the average clubbers club night experience.

if i only went to one tiesto event per year i' like to hear some classics.

djs tour all over the world,

i.e. if pvd went to shanghai, there is a very high probability that many people have never seen pvd live before.

don't you think some of them clubbers would be thrilled to hear for an angel played by it's creator.

only in the last 3-4 years have internet speeds permitted rapid access to sets,

when i got into trance heavily in 1999, radio was pretty much the only place to hear new stuff,

a new ferry set every 2 months was a great acheivement,

the tracklist had by then rotated substantially, so we never really experienced djs whoring the same tracks mainly their own all the time

The best DJs in the world have up to 500,000 records.

500,000!

If a DJ is really putting a lot of effort into being the tip-top pinnacle of his profession--like, say, someone considered #1--then it doesn't matter if you listen to a new set of his once a week or ten times a week, you really shouldn't hear the same song twice from him in any inordinate amount of time (if he's doing his job correctly, with the connections he has and the records he obtains).

If, on the other hand, all you hear are his own productions and his friends/labels productions 10 times a week, then what you're bearing witness to is not a DJ, but a spamwhore.
