yup.. it went well by the way i had a gig the following night at the gay bar and got to use my djm800 for the 1st time (publically) ~ they were both great!

DJing at a club, and DJing at a private party where you have to bring your own sound system is completely different.

I'm sorry but EDM gigs are pretty hard to come by. But when they do, they pay really well. At least here in LA it is, because we're in DJ Capital of the World! hahaha everyone's a DJ. If youre starting off, expect to either do it for free, or get paid very little. That's the price to pay for new DJs. I've been there.

On the other hand, I have no problem getting mainstream gigs. Shit, those are pretty easy and quite fun too. Those usually pay me $150-$250.

Mobile gigs are alot more money. You can make about $150 for a small house party to $1000 for a wedding.

Yeap! If you wanna make money, get into the Wedding DJing business.

I get paid in booze and drugs. That's where the money would end up going anyway.

oh yeah, my first gig was like that too, its an awesome feeling playing to a crowd and having people people coming up to you and telling you you're tearing it up

not about getting paid IMO, if i do then thats a bonus, but i'm happy to play for free because its fun

lol yeah

i did like 5 free gigs (when i first started). don't get me wrong, i love spinning, but i will not do it for free.. i'm tryin to get paid yo! i'm a loan officer, full time student, full time boyfriend, etc... my time is valuable

and that's it right there

think of the time and expense that goes into even just one gig

the price you payed for each track you played that night, music isn't free

transit, your car, gas, getting a friend to drive, their gas, hell even bus tickets if you're taking that route, it's costing you to just get down to the venue

then there's just the cost of your personal time, time that you could be using to further your career, spend time with your girlfriend, etc.
even the time you've invested practicing, it's worth something

i'm all about young guys gaining experience but when i'm getting undercutted for shows because promoters would rather not pay a few inexperienced djs and give their crowd a half-assed show than book good talent and spend a few bucks on a quality show

your time is worth money, even inexperienced guys should be asking promoters about how they compensate their djs

and that's exactly how you word it, go up to them and ask "how do you compensate your djs?"

they should pay you or offer some free drinks unless it's obvious they aren't making any money that night, in which case you need to work on getting people to come and see/hear you spin

Posted by Mmanu on Oct-26-2006 17:15:

+1. Records don't grow up on trees, and I didn't get my gear for free.

I'm Djing a party for free on Saturday though. But it's a private halloween party for a friend, so it's different.

Posted by DjWoody on Oct-26-2006 18:06:

There's times when you just have to do it for free, or for very low rates.

Shit, if I got asked to open for Tiesto or PVD, I don't give a fuck doing it for free. Think about that one.

Then you are just fucking yourself. Seriously- think of the money from that sort of night... you'd be being used.

Chances are if you were being offered a spot to open for Pvd you be a somewhat established dj in the city... Established DJs get paid.

Barely any of you guys really see the buisness aspect of this industry. If you want to make your life djin, you need to pay the bills. fuck, i wouldnt want to stand there and get paid nothing while paul got like 15Gs. What sort of reasoning is that? The music youd be playing would be the sound of you getting fucked.

You wont get to where you want to be with attitude like that.. there are dj's WAY more hungry than you are apperently.. which is cool because it makes more room for the guys that really want to get their name out.

Edit.. guys like you are in it for the wrong reasons, makes me laugh actually.

Posted by Tony Morello on Oct-26-2006 20:46:

i'm not in it for the wrong reasons, i love what i do, i wouldn't be doing it otherwise and anyone that's a working dj will tell you it's not an easy job and i still play free shows here and there

i've just been in the industry for a while now and know that there's money to be made, so i make it

i'm just trying to point out that no dj should have to play for free, there's money, ask for it

if you don't the promoter just puts it back in his pocket and chuckles while you sweat for free

don't cheapen our profession, we're worth more

you can't pay bills with good thoughts and warm feelings

Get the fuck out of here with shit like that. I work hard as a dj and love the music. I workd hard producing and DJing and never stop working to progress and promote my sound. I also work hard helping people in this forum and trying to make it the best I can. I've dedicated a LOT of time in here and I am pretty fucking sure most users see that. Am i getting paid to mod this forum and help these people? I think not. I've played gigs for nothing and in countries and clubs you couldn't fucking imagine. The fact of the martter is if you want to dedicate your life to something and work your hardest at it, you need money. money for tunes, equipment, food, a home, etc. Currently I have the resources to do this without needing to make a living off djing, but in the future... doubtful.

I'm not asking for the world here, but when you are in a club, every single person working for that club (in almost all circumstances) are making money, or at least enough money to cover costs. Promoters, bartenders, owners, bouncers etc.

I've done the free gig thing. I've done it a lot, and things are changing in my life- money is becoming not only necessary for excess expenses, but basic living.

You scoff at me for wanting compensation yet think nothing of the exorbitant fees charged by todays dj heroes.

We are worth more.

It seems like you have made a name for yourself, and are able to make money djing, which is awsome!

Im actually talking about the dj's who are just getting into the business.. you have to make sacrifices early to make money in the future.

Posted by ivanbee on Oct-26-2006 20:53:

fuck the money...just give me the pussy and the weed!

but that's what i'm trying to tell you guys, you don't have to play for free and you shouldn't

if you're not comfortable asking for compensation for your time, you shouldn't be playing out

I dont care who you are or what you do.. nor do i care to read this long post im quoting.. all im saying is that guys like you should step aside with that attitude, and let guys like dj Woody make a name for themselves and not wine about a couple hundred dollars.

there's a reason i asked allied to join my crew, he has talent and he's one of the hardest working djs i know, i don't surround myself with idiots, that's not how i got to where i am

if all djs are getting paid, promoters will be more aware of how they're spending the cash

once again the talent will rise to the top

there are people who can beatmatch and play records, then there are people who can dj

Accusations? lol your getting way too serious man, we obviously have different views on the subject.. i think guys like you are in it for the wrong reasons.. if its truly what you love, and your good, the money will come.. producing is where its at anyway.

Read my post. I do a looot of things for free. A LOT. in fact, the majority of my djing in India was all for free drinks- all the promotion i did, gigs i played, etc.

Fuck I mod this forum and try and help countless up and coming djs learn their craft each day!
