Ok fine, I guess I jumped to conclusions. It's just that everytime I mention an OBJECTIVE thing about the Yankees to any Mets fan, they jump into this heated retort about how the Mets stack up in this way and that way, and how we're not better... which is how I took your post to be ... very inferiority complex-y

And yes, I meant Jake Westbrook. My mistake.

You don't think Cano or Wang are above average? Cano finished 3rd in the BA race and Wang tied Santana for 19 wins. Think wins are overrated? Fine, he posted a mid 3 ERA in the toughest division in baseball. Why do you think I'm trying to be "cool" by rattling off players' names? Yeah, I've never seen them play, but I know their stats and keep tabs with the AAA team, but don't go into the AA or A level, although I have attended about 20 SI Yankee games over the past couple of years.

I'll ask again b/c I really want to know - How is keeping track of the future of your team "trying to be cool"?

i believe the point is that the yankees were running a few years dry between soriano/johnson and wang/cano. shamus is not trying to discredit what wang and cano have done. but for a little while, maybe 2, 3 years the yankees were looking to free agents and not trying to replenish from within the organization.

Totally agreed on that - Now that Cashman is back in the drivers seat(hopefully this continues), I think we'll continue to see player development be a priority - something that not a focus when Steinbrenner and his Tampa Faction were running things and Cashman was nothing more than a puppet.

I keep track of the Mets minors as well. Also, Tabata was in low-A, so you do check lower than AAA.

Wins are worthless and yes, I do think Wang is overrated. He's good and I'd take him as a 4th or 5th starter on the Mets, but he strikes out way too few batters for my tastes. Eventually, that has to catch up to him. I'll wait 'till next year.

As for Cano, if he can keep batting .340+, then yeah, he's above-average. The odds of that happening are quite low. And his OBP is horriffic. He's on the Yankees though, so it doesn't quite matter as much as if he were on another team.

Besides all that, I said "before Cano and Wang."

In anycase, how did this turn into a "Mets v. Yankees" thread?

I'm not comparing him to Maddux or Glavine in their prime, but if you were waiting for them to start K'ing guys, then you'd be waiting an awfully long time. And I def don't consistenly check on lower than AAA - no time. I heard his name and did some reading up on him.

Ok fine, let's keep this strictly to a Mets thread....

Jose Reyes was dead last among qualifying NL SS's in range factor

I don't go by stats like that. I'm more SABR. But I think even with the SABR stats, Reyes was poor. However... he's 23.

Also, it wasn't until last year that Jeter was anything but a horrendous SS.

Glavine averaged 132 Ks a season over his career. Maddux averaged 159 a season. Wang had 76 this year.

I thought we were keeping this to MEts only? Wang's strategy is to let hitters pound the ball into the ground with his sinker. I too think that guys need to strike guys out to be effective over the course of their careers, but Wang has been effective ever since he got here. It's not b/c he doesn't have the stuff - He throws 95 mph.

Posted by Shamez214 on Oct-10-2006 03:15:

Brandon Webb, one of the top Sinker ball pitchers int he majors, had 178 Ks this year. All I'm saying is that he's gonna have to start striking people out. The more balls get put into play, the more hits will start falling.

F the Mets for having a STUPID lottery to buy WS tickets. Of course I'm only ranting because I just got an e-mail saying I wasn't picked but I planned on camping out like a real man and buying them. Whatever. Guess I'll have to wait 'til next year like the Cubs.

Hopefully the Mets continue doing their thing, and the Cardinals keep up the offense that they displayed in Game 1

Posted by Shamez214 on Oct-13-2006 10:11:

It's all due to this guy:

Always look out for him. If there is a sighting, the Mets can't lose.
