Boy do I hate when people say that.

Wouldn't rock be EDM as well?

Nope.

I'm sorry you hate it, it's a fact.

Rock music is made electronically. And people dance to it.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Nov-05-2006 23:14:

Yeah, if you call a mixing desk "electronically". And people dancing to it doesn't automatically qualify it as dance music.

You apparently listen to progressive breaks. Where do you think breaks come from, exactly?

So... a group like The Roots or Gym Class Heroes. What are they? They are most certainly hip-hop. But are they EDM? They make their beats using live instruments like a rock band does.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Nov-05-2006 23:20:

Well then no, quite obviously. But they're also obviously exceptions to the rule.

MTV Overdrive might have it, but I can't get much from their site since I don't have an updated Flash player on my work computer (and can't install)

I just find it silly when hip hop is called EDM. Same thing with pop music. They are their own entities.

Why exactly? Hip-hop was born on the dancefloor out of a DJing trick, the overwhelming majority is produced and recorded using the same techniques as other electronic dance music, the beat is a crucial aspect and the music is regularly played in properly mixed sets by proper DJs in clubs. I went to see Trevor Nelson play a DJ set in a club the other week and I saw an entire dancefloor dancing to hip-hop tracks. Hell, one of the core principles of hip-hop is dancing.

I dunno really. I think its just one of those beliefs that, no matter what is shown to me otherwise, I will always feel that way about it.

Don't get me wrong though, I love hip hop. Probably just as much as any other form of EDM.

Kanye didn't produce Touch The Sky, Just Blaze did. However, sampling oldies or soul tunes and pitch them up or down has been done in hip hop for ages, it's a very hip hop thing, so to speak.

When referring to the hip-hop genre as a whole then yes sampling is second nature, but on an individual artist basis when sampling overshadows creativity that's when the problem arises. His work revolves around the works of others and that's why I think he's an overrated and not a good producer in my eyes. The lyrics for his other hit track Jesus Walks were co-wrote by Indianapolis-based rapper Che "Rhymefest" Smith while the other top 40 called "Through The Wire" samples Chaka Khan's hit "Through The Fire" back in 1984, "Gold Digger" contains samples of "I Got A Woman" performed by Ray Charles; "Diamonds From Sierra Leone (Remix)" contains a sample of "Diamonds Are Forever" performed by Shirley Bassey; "We Can Make It Better" contains a sample of "Make It Easy On Yourself" performed by The Third Degrees and on and on and on. Hec, his profile on discogs even states that his whole career was based on sampling.

No thanks, but I prefer other hip-hop artists over this guy.

EDM is a crap term. Just call it Electronica, it's more general.

Personally i wouldn't label rap or hiphop as electronica, even if it's produced in similar ways.
